Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhatsApp’s disappearing messages and View Once are different controls: disappearing messages apply a timer to new messages in a chat, while View Once applies to one photo, video, or voice message and expires after it is opened. Neither guarantees that every trace is erased or that a recipient cannot capture what they see.
How do WhatsApp disappearing messages work?
Disappearing messages are an optional chat setting. Choose a timer of 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days after sending; eligible new messages in that chat then disappear when the timer runs out, unless a message is kept. Turning the setting on does not change messages already sent or received. WhatsApp explains the setting and its exceptions in its About disappearing messages guidance.
In an individual chat, either participant can turn disappearing messages on or off. You can also set a default timer for new individual chats. In a group, any participant can change the setting by default, but admins can restrict that ability to admins.
What the timer does not remove
- If a recipient does not open WhatsApp before a message expires, its notification preview might remain until they open the app.
- A reply that quotes a disappearing message may still show the quoted text after the original expires.
- Forwarding a message to a chat where disappearing messages are off does not make it disappear from that destination chat.
- Media sent in a chat with disappearing messages enabled disappears from the chat and is not saved to Photos by default.
- WhatsApp says the feature is unavailable for some payment- or order-related messages in certain countries.
Kept messages and backups
In a group, participants can keep a disappearing message before its timer ends. A kept message remains visible to everyone in the conversation. The sender has ultimate control over whether a message they sent can be kept, is notified if it is kept, and can unkeep it; WhatsApp says there is approximately 30 days to do so.

A backup created before a disappearing message vanishes may include it. WhatsApp says the message is deleted when a user restores from that backup.
How does View Once work?
View Once is selected separately for each photo, video, or voice message. The recipient can open the item once; after leaving the viewer, they cannot view it again in WhatsApp. The item expires from the chat if it has not been opened within 14 days. The sender cannot view it again after sending.

View Once content cannot be forwarded, copied, saved, starred, or shared within WhatsApp. An opened item is not included in backups, while an unopened item may be restored from a backup. The sender sees an opened receipt only if the recipient has read receipts enabled. See WhatsApp’s About view once and instructions for sending and opening View Once media and voice messages for its guidance.
How do I send a View Once photo or voice message?
Select View Once each time you send an eligible item; it is not a persistent chat setting. WhatsApp’s documented sending and opening instructions are for Android, and its help page says View Once is unavailable on WhatsApp Web. Interface steps can vary by platform and app version, so use the current in-app controls for the item you are sending.

Can someone save or screenshot View Once content?
WhatsApp blocks ordinary in-app saving and screenshots for View Once media, and its instructions say recipients cannot screen-record it. However, its help guidance notes that iOS or Android users may be able to record audio with the native screen recorder, and a recipient can use another device to photograph or record a screen or speaker. The controls therefore reduce common ways to retain content but cannot guarantee it will not be captured. WhatsApp advises: “Only send view once photos, videos, or voice messages to people you trust.”

| Question | Disappearing messages | View Once |
|---|---|---|
| What do you configure? | A chat timer for eligible new messages | An option for each photo, video, or voice message |
| When does it expire? | 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days after sending, unless kept | After it is opened once; unopened content expires after 14 days |
| Does it affect existing messages? | No, only messages sent after activation | It is selected for each item sent |
| Main qualifications | Previews, quoted text, kept messages, backups, and forwarding to a chat with the setting off | Capture using another device; unopened content may be restored from backup |
Use the chat timer when you want eligible new messages in a conversation to expire on a schedule. Use View Once when you want one eligible media item to be available for a single viewing in WhatsApp. For either feature, share sensitive material only with someone you trust; temporary settings are not a guarantee against retention.
