NASA/JPL lists the lunar phases as last quarter on October 3, new Moon on October 10, first quarter on October 18, and full Moon on October 25. Those phase dates offer context for the month’s changing sky brightness; your local sky chart can help with exact moonrise and moonset times.
When can you see Saturn in October 2026?
October 4: opposition
At opposition, Earth passes between the Sun and an outer planet, so Saturn appears opposite the Sun in our sky. NASA says Saturn rises around sunset and remains visible for much of the night on October 4. The date is a useful opportunity to look for the ringed planet, but the exact time it clears your horizon depends on your location.
NASA/JPL’s October 2026 guide also notes Saturn’s north-polar hexagon-shaped jet stream, which it says spans nearly 20,000 miles. That is a figure reported in the guide, not a new measurement announced for 2026.

When should you watch the Orionids?
Best practical window: before dawn after moonset
The Orionids peak during the night of October 21 into October 22. Their meteors are debris left by Halley’s Comet. In 2026, a bright waxing gibbous Moon will wash out some of the fainter streaks, so NASA recommends trying the few hours before dawn after moonset and choosing a dark location.
Although the shower appears to radiate from Orion, meteors can streak across any part of the sky. Face a broad, dark area rather than staring only at Orion, and give your eyes time to adjust. NASA’s guide does not provide an hourly meteor rate for October 2026, so no particular number of meteors per hour can be promised.

How do you find the Pleiades?
Start with your unaided eyes
On the night of October 27 into October 28, look east in the evening for the Moon near the Pleiades as both climb higher. NASA describes the Pleiades as a slightly fuzzy grouping of six to seven stars, visible to the unaided eye. You do not need binoculars to find the cluster; binoculars or a telescope are optional ways to see more detail.

Use a chart for your location and check the forecast close to the night you plan to observe; clouds, light pollution, and the Moon’s position can change what is visible.
