There is no universal maximum range for mesh Wi‑Fi. Home systems are usually rated by the total floor area a kit may cover, not by a guaranteed distance from a node. Current examples include three-node kits rated for up to 5,500 or 5,600 square feet, but walls, floors, interference, placement and the connection between nodes all affect usable coverage.
What does “maximum range” mean for mesh Wi‑Fi?
For a home mesh kit, the headline number is usually an area estimate for the whole system—not a radius around each node and not a promise that every corner will receive a strong signal or a particular speed. TP-Link says Deco coverage varies with layout, wall materials, interference and node positioning rather than having a fixed distance specification (TP-Link Deco range FAQ).
Outdoor access points and enterprise mesh networks may instead be described by open-space distance, radio-cell radius or access-point spacing. Those numbers use different assumptions and should not be treated as equivalent to a home kit’s floor-area rating.
How much floor area do home mesh kits claim to cover?
These are manufacturer-listed maximum area figures, not guaranteed coverage in every building:

These ratings are not directly comparable as proof of real-world performance: product type, layout assumptions and the number and placement of nodes matter. In particular, do not read a multi-node home system’s total area as the distance one node can cover.
How far apart should mesh nodes be?
For wireless backhaul—the Wi‑Fi link that carries traffic between mesh units—nodes must remain close enough to maintain a reliable connection. TP-Link recommends no more than 50 feet between wireless Deco units. Linksys gives a more layout-based guideline: keep child nodes within two rooms or one floor of one another and reduce walls and other obstacles between them (Linksys support).

These are placement recommendations, not guarantees that a node at the stated limit will deliver a particular speed. A dense wall, floor slab or source of interference can make a shorter separation perform worse than a more open layout. Ethernet backhaul can avoid relying on a wireless node-to-node link, but it does not remove the need to place each access point where its client devices can connect.
Why can actual coverage be smaller than the advertised area?
- Building materials: Walls and floors weaken or block radio signals; the effect depends on the material and layout.
- Interference: Other wireless networks and devices can reduce usable performance.
- Node placement: A node hidden behind obstacles or placed too far from its parent may have a weak backhaul even if it is near the room needing coverage.
- Radio band: Different bands behave differently through obstacles and at distance, so a range figure for one band is not a universal Wi‑Fi distance.
- Backhaul type: Wireless backhaul shares the environment’s radio conditions; Ethernet provides a wired connection between nodes.
How far can outdoor and enterprise mesh links reach?
Outdoor access point: open-space figures
TP-Link lists maximum open-space transmission distances for its EAP225-Outdoor of 300 m (984 ft) at 5 GHz and 200 m (656 ft) at 2.4 GHz. The manufacturer cautions that obstacles and interference change the result (TP-Link Omada EAP225-Outdoor FAQ). These figures describe an outdoor access-point scenario in open space; they do not predict indoor home coverage or guarantee usable service at that distance.

Enterprise mesh: design distances
Cisco’s Wireless Mesh Access Points Design and Deployment Guide gives planning figures for a specific nonvoice design: up to 2,000 feet between mesh access points, a 1,000-foot cell radius, and a 600-foot 2.4 GHz local access-cell radius (Cisco deployment guide). These are enterprise design values for the stated use case, not consumer-router range claims or recommendations for a typical house.

How to estimate coverage for your space
- Start with the floor plan. Use the kit’s stated area as a rough system-level ceiling, then account for floors, closed-off rooms and dense construction rather than assuming a simple radius.
- Plan node positions, not just node count. Keep wireless nodes within a dependable link of one another while locating them to serve the areas that need Wi‑Fi.
- Check the backhaul path. If the nodes will connect wirelessly, avoid excessive separation and obstacles. If Ethernet is available, a wired backhaul removes the wireless hop between nodes.
- Verify in the actual rooms. Check connection quality where devices are used; a manufacturer’s area maximum does not establish edge speed or performance through your specific walls.
