At least ten named dinosaurs or distinct, still-unnamed dinosaur fossil finds are associated with Antarctica. They range from the Early Jurassic predator Cryolophosaurus to Late Cretaceous armored and bird-line dinosaurs, plus evidence of long-necked herbivores. Not all ten are formally named species, and some fossils come from the Antarctic Peninsula or nearby islands rather than the continent’s interior.
How dinosaurs lived in a very different Antarctica
Dinosaurs lived in Antarctica when it was part of a warmer, forested world. The continent is now mostly buried beneath ice, which leaves relatively little exposed rock to search and makes fossil collecting difficult. As a result, the Antarctic dinosaur record is sparse: some animals are known from named fossils, while others are represented by a fragment or an unnamed group.

The record spans at least two widely separated intervals. The USGS identifies the Hanson Formation’s Early Jurassic dinosaurs as the only known Early Jurassic dinosaurs from Antarctica. Museum sources also describe dinosaurs from Late Cretaceous deposits on the Antarctic Peninsula and nearby islands. The list below distinguishes named taxa from unnamed finds rather than suggesting that all ten are equally well understood.

What each Antarctic dinosaur fossil tells us
Cryolophosaurus ellioti: the crested predator
This Early Jurassic theropod is Antarctica’s best-known dinosaur predator. Its curved crest over the nose gives it the nickname “frozen crested lizard.” The Natural History Museum describes it as carnivorous and about 8 metres long; the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County gives an exhibition estimate of 25 feet, or about 7.6 metres. These are source-specific estimates, not precise measurements of a complete animal.

Glacialisaurus hammeri: a one-ton Early Jurassic herbivore
The Field Museum identifies Glacialisaurus hammeri as a sauropodomorph and summarizes it as a one-ton herbivore. Sauropodomorphs include the lineage that gave rise to the familiar long-necked sauropods, although the name alone does not mean that this animal was one of the later giant sauropods.
Antarctopelta: an armored forest-floor dinosaur
The Natural History Museum’s 2026 synthesis places this Late Cretaceous ankylosaur among the animals living on Antarctica’s forest floor. Its armored body plan contrasts with the two-legged predators and more lightly built herbivores in the record.
Morrosaurus: a small herbivore
The same museum synthesis identifies Morrosaurus as one of Antarctica’s small herbivores. The cited material does not establish a length or weight, so a more precise size comparison is not warranted here.

Trinisaura: an Antarctic ornithopod
Trinisaura is included among the Late Cretaceous ornithopod genera recorded from Antarctica. The available cited information supports its place in the fossil record, but not a body-size estimate or a detailed diet.
Imperobator: a bird-line predator with debated placement
The Natural History Museum describes Imperobator as a two-legged Antarctic predator. It is safest to call it a predatory paravian, or bird-line dinosaur: its more precise position has been debated, and the evidence cited here does not justify a more specific family assignment.
Vegavis: an avian dinosaur
Vegavis belongs among the avian dinosaurs—the bird branch of the dinosaur family tree—not among non-avian dinosaurs. The Natural History Museum describes it as an ancient relative of ducks and geese. That makes it a different kind of Antarctic dinosaur from the land predators and herbivores in this list.

An unnamed titanosaur: evidence of a larger sauropod
A vertebra described in a 2026 study was formally recognized as belonging to an unnamed titanosaur, a long-necked sauropod. The Natural History Museum places the fossil at about 82 million years old and estimates the animal at roughly 6–7 metres long. Because the find is a fragment, it does not establish a complete species-level profile. The museum calls it the first dinosaur bone discovered on the Antarctic continent; that claim concerns the continent, distinct from the broader Antarctic-region fossils known from the Peninsula and nearby islands.
An unnamed basal ornithischian: a partial skeleton
Field Museum researchers collected a small basal ornithischian skeleton during the 2010/11 expedition. It is a distinct Antarctic dinosaur find, but the cited Field Museum page does not give it a formal genus and species or state its geological age.
Two unnamed sauropodomorph groups
Museum exhibition material describes two recently discovered, undescribed sauropodomorph groups related to long-necked herbivores. They add to the evidence for plant-eating dinosaurs in Antarctica, but should be treated as unnamed fossil groups rather than formally established species.

Were there giant herbivores in Antarctica?
Yes, the fossil evidence includes sauropodomorphs and a titanosaur, both members of the long-necked herbivore lineage. The scale of the evidence matters, though: the cited Field Museum summary gives Glacialisaurus a one-ton estimate, and the Natural History Museum estimates the unnamed titanosaur at roughly 6–7 metres. The latter estimate comes from a vertebra, not a complete skeleton. The Natural History Museum notes that sauropods were among the largest animals ever to walk on land, but these Antarctic finds do not by themselves establish that every sauropod there reached giant size.
What the Antarctic record can—and cannot—tell us
- Predators: Cryolophosaurus is an Early Jurassic theropod; the later Imperobator is described as a predatory paravian with debated precise placement.
- Herbivores: The record includes Glacialisaurus, the small herbivore Morrosaurus, an armored ankylosaur, ornithischians, and evidence of sauropodomorphs and a titanosaur.
- Bird-line dinosaurs: Vegavis is avian, so it belongs on the bird branch of the dinosaur tree rather than in the non-avian dinosaur category.
- Uneven certainty: Named species and genera coexist with fragmentary and unnamed material. For some entries, the cited sources do not establish a size, exact diet, or geological age.
These fossils show that Antarctica supported varied dinosaur communities in warmer geological periods. They do not provide a complete census: extensive ice cover, limited exposed rock, and difficult field conditions constrain what can be found.
