Google Wallet stores your supported payment cards and other passes or credentials; Google Pay is the payment method or checkout experience you use to pay. A card saved in Wallet can be used through Google Pay, whether you tap at a supported contactless terminal or pay online where a merchant offers Google Pay. They are related services, not two competing ways to store the same things.
Google Wallet stores cards and other items
Google describes Wallet as “a secure & private digital wallet that gives you quick access to payments cards, passes, tickets, keys, or IDs that you choose to store on it.” Google Wallet Help lists examples such as loyalty and gift cards, tickets, transit and boarding passes, some IDs, and car keys. Which items you can add depends on your country or region and the specific feature.
For payments, Wallet holds eligible card details so you can use them with supported Google payment experiences. A physical card that works for contactless payments is not automatically eligible for Wallet: Google says the card and its issuer must explicitly support Google Wallet.
Google Pay is how you pay
Google Wallet Help says, “Google Pay is how you easily pay for things online, in-apps, and when you tap to pay wherever Google Pay is accepted.” You may encounter Google Pay as a checkout option on a website or in an app, or at a contactless payment terminal. The merchant must offer Google Pay for online or in-app checkout; your saved Wallet payment method can then be used.

For those online and in-app transactions, Google Pay Help says, “When you check out with Google Pay, Google doesn’t hold or process your funds.” The transaction takes place between the merchant and the financial institution that issued your payment method. Google Pay Help explains this arrangement.
How the names fit the way you pay
| Where or what | Google Wallet | Google Pay |
|---|---|---|
| In a shop | Stores an eligible card on a supported device. | Used to make a contactless payment where accepted. |
| On a website or in an app | Can supply a saved payment method. | Appears as a checkout option when the merchant offers it. |
| Passes and credentials | Can store supported passes, tickets, keys, and IDs as well as payment cards. | Payment and checkout experience; not the broader place for storing those items. |
On Android, setup instructions may use both names: Google Pay as the default payment app and Google Wallet as the default NFC wallet app. These are Android payment-setting labels, not an instruction to install or use two separate wallet apps.

What you need for in-store tap to pay
Adding a card is only one part of making a contactless payment. Google’s setup guidance requires a supported device and card, NFC turned on, a screen lock, and compliance with the device’s security requirements. At checkout, look for a terminal displaying the Google Pay or contactless symbol.
- Add an eligible card: Add it to Google Wallet and follow the prompts to verify it with your bank or issuer.
- Check the device settings: Turn on NFC and set a screen lock. On Android, follow the payment-app or NFC-wallet default instructions shown for your device.
- Pay at an accepted terminal: Unlock the device and hold it near the contactless reader, following any prompts shown on the device or terminal.
Exact menus can differ across Android versions and devices. If setup fails, check Google’s current tap-to-pay setup instructions and confirm with your issuer that your particular card is supported.

Why availability varies
Wallet features and payment eligibility depend on the country or region, issuer and card, device, and merchant. Google says Wallet is available in over 50 countries and regions, but that does not mean every Wallet feature or every card works in each one. Check Google’s current supported payment methods by country or region and your bank’s information for card eligibility.
If a card will not add, the bank or issuer is the right place to confirm whether that exact card supports Wallet. If the card is supported but a particular checkout does not show Google Pay, the merchant may not offer it there.
