What’s the Best Basic Laptop for Internet and Email?

A Chromebook suits browser-based work when your services and offline needs fit ChromeOS. Choose Windows for required Windows apps, then compare the exact model’s memory, storage, screen and battery results.

For browsing websites and checking email, choose a Chromebook if the services and tasks you rely on work in a browser; choose a Windows laptop if you need specific Windows software or broader app compatibility. For either system, look at the exact model’s memory, storage, screen comfort and independent battery results—not just its product-family name.

Chromebook or Windows: which fits your use?

A Chromebook is a practical choice for browser-centered tasks and simple everyday use, provided the websites and services you need work in ChromeOS. Before buying, check whether your essential tasks also work offline and whether any required apps are available for ChromeOS.

Choose Windows if you rely on software that requires Windows or want broader desktop-app compatibility. If you are unsure, list the apps and services you use, then verify their operating-system requirements and offline features. Google describes its Chromebook categories and their specifications on its Chromebook product page; those category specifications are not a universal recommendation for every buyer.

What specifications matter for basic use?

Memory: start at 8 GB for light browsing

Microsoft says 8 GB of RAM is suitable for light browsing and most tasks. It is a reasonable target for a basic laptop, especially if you commonly keep several tabs open. More memory may help if you regularly multitask heavily and can afford the upgrade. Google lists 4 GB for its base Chromebook category and 8 GB for Chromebook Plus; that distinction describes product categories, not a guarantee that 4 GB will suit every person’s workload. See Microsoft’s PC and laptop buying guide.

Storage: match capacity to where you keep files

Think about whether you save documents, photos and downloads on the laptop or primarily use cloud storage. Microsoft notes that people who keep more in the cloud may need less local storage. Google lists 32 GB or more for its base Chromebook category and 128 GB or more for Chromebook Plus. These are category specifications; check the capacity of the exact configuration you are considering.

Screen: resolution is only one part of comfort

Resolution affects image sharpness. Microsoft defines Full HD (FHD) as 1920 × 1080, but a sharp display can still be uncomfortable if it is dim or reflective. Consider screen size, brightness and glare as well as resolution, particularly if you read for long stretches. A review of the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 2-in-1 Gen 10, for example, flags display brightness as a compromise despite its higher-resolution screen.

Battery: use independent results as a model-specific guide

Battery life varies with configuration and use, so treat a reviewer’s runtime as a result for the tested device, not a promise for every laptop in that family. In its 2026 budget-laptop roundup, Tom’s Guide reported 8 hours 32 minutes for its Lenovo Chromebook Plus 2-in-1 Gen 10 test and 14 hours 29 minutes for its tested Dell XPS 13 (2026) configuration. Those figures help illustrate differences between specific reviewed devices; they do not establish what another configuration will achieve.

Current examples illustrate the trade-offs

These reviewed laptops show how two machines aimed at different operating systems can suit basic online tasks while making different compromises. They are examples, not universal recommendations; compare the precise configuration, current availability and price in your country before deciding.

Model and system Configuration or screen noted Reported battery test Trade-offs noted
Lenovo Chromebook Plus 2-in-1 Gen 10 (ChromeOS) 14-inch 1920 × 1200 touchscreen; Intel Core 3 N355; 8 GB RAM; 128 GB storage 8 hours 32 minutes in Tom’s Guide’s test Review praises versatility and typing, while noting a dim display and battery life as compromises.
Dell XPS 13 (2026) (Windows) Intel Core 5 320; 8 GB RAM in the tested configuration; 13.4-inch 2560 × 1600 touchscreen 14 hours 29 minutes in Tom’s Guide’s test Review notes a webcam image-quality drawback; its capabilities may be more than an email-and-browsing user needs.
Asus Chromebook CM14 (ChromeOS) Exact configuration not stated in TechRadar’s 2026 budget guide 9.5 hours in TechRadar’s test TechRadar describes it as an inexpensive option, with limits under heavier multitasking and a dimmer screen. Confirm the configuration and support status before purchase.

The Lenovo and Dell specifications and test results come from Tom’s Guide’s 2026 roundup. The Asus result and trade-offs come from TechRadar’s 2026 budget-laptop guide. Review results belong to the tested devices and conditions; they should not be generalized to every version of those models.

Check these details before you buy

  • Required software: Confirm the operating system supports every essential app and service.
  • Offline needs: Check whether you can still do important work without an internet connection.
  • Exact configuration: Verify RAM, storage, screen resolution and other specifications on the listing for the precise model.
  • Display comfort: Look for brightness and glare information, not just screen resolution.
  • Battery evidence: Prefer independent test results for the exact model and configuration, and remember that your use can change runtime.
  • Support and availability: Verify that the model is currently sold in your country and that it will receive operating-system support. Prices and availability vary by location, configuration and date.

Older buying guides can still help explain what to look for, but their model lists may no longer reflect current availability or support. For example, Stuff’s budget-laptop guide includes older Asus VivoBook X1500EA and Chromebook CX1100 examples; check their present availability, specifications and operating-system support rather than treating those examples as current picks.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
