What’s Taking Up Smart TV Storage—and How to Check

Smart TV storage controls vary by platform and model. Check the TV’s storage screen first, then remove apps or use cache, data, reset, or expansion options only where supported.

A smart TV’s storage screen can show whether apps are using space, and some models also let you clear an app’s cache or data. The available checks and remedies depend on the TV’s platform, model, software version, and region; there is no single storage menu or fix that applies to every smart TV.

Why unused apps may not be the whole picture

Deleting apps you no longer use can free space, but it is not the only storage control some TVs provide. Certain models show space by app and offer separate options to clear cache or app data. Other devices may offer only app removal, while some support compatible external storage. The TV’s own storage or app-management screen is the best place to start; a low-memory message by itself does not identify what is consuming space.

Storage controls are not uniform across Samsung, Android TV or Google TV, Apple TV, Roku, and LG. Even within a platform, menu wording and available features can vary by model, software, and country. The steps below describe the manufacturers’ documented paths and limitations, not a universal menu.

Check your TV’s storage before changing anything

  1. Identify the platform and model. Look in the TV’s settings or on its model label. This matters because similarly named TVs may have different storage features.
  2. Open the device’s storage or app-management screen. Look for per-app usage, if available, and note which apps you actually use. Some platforms do not show a per-app breakdown.
  3. Choose the least disruptive supported action. Removing an app, clearing its cache, clearing its data, resetting a hub, and factory-resetting a TV have different consequences. Check what the screen says before confirming.

Samsung TVs

On the 2024 model illustrated in Samsung Australia’s storage guide, the path is Settings → All Settings → Support → Device Care → Manage Storage. Select an app and choose View Details to see options that can include Clear Data and Clear Cache. Samsung cautions that steps and app availability vary by model.

Clearing cache and clearing data are not interchangeable. Cache clearing targets cached app files; clearing data can remove the app’s saved information or settings. If cleanup is insufficient, Samsung’s Australian guidance recommends clearing cache or data on compatible 2020-and-later models, then resetting Smart Hub. A Smart Hub reset initializes downloaded apps and removes their account and settings information. A TV factory reset is a later, more disruptive step that restores factory settings.

Samsung’s developer FAQ says the platform automatically manages Web application cache, that app data persists when the TV is off or an app updates, and that uninstalling an app deletes its data. This describes application-local data and cache; it does not identify the cause of storage use on a particular TV.

Android TV and Google TV

Google’s Android TV storage instructions cover removing downloaded apps and connecting USB storage. When a device recognizes a drive, it may offer a choice to configure it as removable storage or internal storage. If content or apps are moved to the drive, they may depend on that drive remaining connected. Support and menu wording vary, so check the exact TV or streaming device’s manual before buying or formatting a drive.

Apple TV 4K

On Apple TV 4K, go to Settings → General → Usage → Manage Storage, following Apple’s storage guidance. Downloaded apps use device storage. Deleting an app also deletes that app’s data, so consider whether you need its locally stored information before removing it.

Roku TVs and devices

Roku says messages such as “Not enough memory,” “Can’t run app,” or “Insufficient memory” can be related either to internet connectivity trouble or to low device storage. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends removing apps when storage is low. A system restart is a separate, less invasive reset option that does not affect settings; it may help some errors, but it is not a storage expansion method.

Roku describes memory expansion only for devices with a microSD slot. Do not assume a Roku TV or streaming device has one; check the specific hardware. Roku’s page was last updated September 6, 2026.

LG TVs

LG recommends deleting unnecessary apps to free memory in its low-memory guide. LG also notes that TVs made before webOS 3.5 (2017) may not support current web standards, and apps can fail under memory constraints. That is a compatibility and memory limitation, not proof that a particular app is occupying a particular amount of storage.

LG’s separate USB storage guide explains how to browse and play media from a USB device. It does not establish that a USB drive can expand app storage. Capacity, file-format, power, and safe-ejection guidance depends on the model.

Can you add storage to a smart TV?

Sometimes, but only when the specific device supports the intended use. Google documents USB storage configured as removable or internal storage on recognized Android TV devices. Roku’s memory-expansion route is limited to devices with a microSD slot. LG’s documented USB feature is media playback, not app-storage expansion. The cited Apple and Samsung guidance describes managing built-in storage rather than adding a drive for apps.

Before buying or formatting a drive, check the manual for the exact model. Confirm whether external storage can hold apps, whether a particular format or capacity is required, and whether apps or content will stop working if the drive is disconnected. USB ports on TVs do not, by themselves, establish that the TV supports expandable app storage.

Use a low-risk cleanup order

  1. Inspect the storage screen. Record what it actually shows; do not guess at a cause from the warning message alone.
  2. Remove apps you no longer need. This is the simplest documented cleanup step on the platforms covered here. Check whether uninstalling also deletes app data.
  3. Clear cache or data only where the TV offers it. Cache and data are distinct controls; clearing data can remove saved app information or settings.
  4. Restart if the issue may be an error. On Roku, a system restart does not change settings and is distinct from deleting apps or expanding storage.
  5. Use resets only after weighing their effects. A Samsung Smart Hub reset removes downloaded apps’ account and settings information; a TV factory reset restores factory settings. Read the on-screen warning before proceeding.
  6. Consider external storage only if the exact device supports it. Verify app-storage support and drive requirements in the device manual rather than relying on the presence of a USB port.
