They are not one continuous diary, and their entries need to be read in light of when and why they were written—and, sometimes, who wrote them.
What survives—and where to read it
The digitised Davy Notebooks Project covers 129 notebooks and sets of lecture notes. Lancaster Digital Collections describes the collection as a searchable edition pairing transcriptions with manuscript images. The project ran from 2019 to 2024, with volunteers helping transcribe the material. Browse the Davy Notebooks at Lancaster Digital Collections.

The collection is varied rather than diary-like: it includes laboratory records, lecture notes, drafts, poetry, geological observations, travel accounts and personal philosophy. The Royal Institution also points to reading and shopping lists, gossip, sporting pursuits, lecture plans and notes for live demonstrations. These different kinds of records offer different kinds of evidence; a list, a draft and an experiment entry should not be read as if they served the same purpose.
What the notebooks reveal about Davy’s work
Experiments as a process, not just a result
Laboratory records and drafts can preserve scientific work in progress, alongside the polished explanations that later appeared in print. They may show questions being explored and ideas taking shape. But not every entry is in Davy’s hand: Lancaster’s collection description identifies laboratory writing by Davy, Michael Faraday, William Thomas Brande and unidentified writers. A passage should be attributed to Davy only where the catalogue or manuscript supports that attribution.

Project accounts highlight notes on early nitrous oxide experiments and pain relief, as well as possible names Davy considered for potassium and sodium: “potarchium” and “sodarchium.” These examples show the range of material in the notebooks; the proposed names were not adopted, and the notes alone do not establish that Davy was solely responsible for every later medical implication of nitrous oxide. The Royal Institution’s account of findings from the notebooks discusses these examples.
Science communicated in public
Lecture notes and demonstration plans reveal Davy not only as an experimental chemist but as a public teacher. They can help connect his laboratory activity to the way he presented science at the Royal Institution and other venues. To understand a particular lecture, use the entry’s date and context rather than assuming that every plan became a performance exactly as written.

Poetry and other pursuits
Poetry appears throughout the notebooks, sometimes alongside records of scientific exploration. Geological observations, travel accounts and sporting pursuits also sit beside technical material. Their coexistence complicates a portrait of Davy as only a chemist, without making every personal trace a complete account of his character.
What they suggest about his personal life and career
Lists, travel notes, gossip and health-related observations offer glimpses of daily routines and interests. They are scattered traces, not a transparent or comprehensive record of private life. Their significance depends on the entry’s date, intended use and surrounding material.

The notebooks can also be read alongside letters and career records to understand relationships, recognition and controversy. Davy was born in Penzance, joined the Royal Institution in 1801 and became its Professor of Chemistry in 1802. His career included isolating sodium and potassium using an electric battery, developing a form of miners’ safety lamp, serving as President of the Royal Society and dying in Geneva in 1829. Those milestones help place notebook entries in a broader professional context; they do not settle questions of priority or credit on their own.
The safety lamp is a reminder that the story of scientific achievement can involve disputes as well as celebrated discoveries. Lancaster’s project description notes a bitter priority controversy involving George Stephenson and William Reid Clanny. A careful account should not simply credit Davy as the sole inventor.

Letters provide a complementary perspective. The Royal Institution says more than 200 of Davy’s letters are held in its archives; they address topics including electrochemistry, electromagnetism, mineralogy, geology, collaborators and controversies. Its Davy Letters Project supplies correspondence context that notebooks alone may not provide. The four-volume Collected Letters of Sir Humphry Davy, co-edited by Tim Fulford and Sharon Ruston, was published by Oxford University Press in 2020. The Royal Institution’s project page gives information about the letters and edition.

- Purpose: Is it a laboratory record, lecture note, draft, list or diary-like observation?
- Writer: Does the catalogue or handwriting establish that Davy wrote it, or might it be another contributor?
- Date and context: Where does it fall in Davy’s career, and what else was happening around that time?
- Form of the evidence: Are you reading a manuscript image, a transcription or an editorial annotation? Check the image when wording or attribution is uncertain.
- Scope: Does the entry establish a specific observation, or are you inferring a broader claim about Davy’s motives, private life or scientific priority?
The Royal Society’s discussion of manuscript research, including the political contest around Davy’s 1820 election as President, illustrates how private papers and correspondence can complicate celebratory biographies. The Royal Society’s account of Davy’s ambition and election offers that wider context.
The manuscripts also reflect the assumptions of their period. The project notes that some passages concerning sex, gender and race are unedifying. Such material should be contextualised, not treated as a neutral modern view or repeated for sensational effect. Where a digital edition flags uncertainty in transcription or attribution, that qualification matters to interpretation.
How the digital edition was assembled
University College London reported on 18 October 2024 that volunteers transcribed 13,000 pages and that 3,841 people took part in the Zooniverse effort. Its account describes the digitised resource as covering all 129 notebooks and sets of lecture notes. These are project figures, not counts of Davy’s letters or of entries written by Davy personally. Read UCL’s announcement about the notebooks’ release.

The Royal Institution’s Director, Katherine Mathieson, called the project a way to preserve “the innermost thoughts of this great scientist” and make insights into his methods available to researchers. That is institutional commentary; the surviving material is a mixed working archive, not a single unfiltered account of Davy’s inner life.
