The product’s label describes connectivity from its perspective; it is not a universal rating of your router. If the addresses differ—or the router shows a private or shared address—there may be another NAT layer between your home network and the internet.
What NAT does—and what a “NAT type” tells you
Network Address Translation (NAT) changes address information as traffic passes between networks. Network Address Port Translation (NAPT) also translates TCP or UDP ports, so multiple devices on a home network can share one public IPv4 address. RFC 3022 defines these forms of translation. Traditional NAT typically permits connections initiated from inside the network; unsolicited inbound connections may need a static mapping.

A NAT type is usually a label provided by a particular console, game, or application to describe the connectivity it detects. The label is specific to that product’s test and requirements. It does not tell you, by itself, where translation happens or whether every other application will work.

RFC 4787 explains that the historic generic labels can be confusing and inadequate: behavior depends on matters such as how mappings and filtering work. For multiplayer gaming, Bungie describes PlayStation’s Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 labels alongside open, moderate, and strict concepts in its own troubleshooting context; do not assume the labels map identically across products. See Bungie’s network troubleshooting guidance.

How to check the NAT status that matters
- Choose the device or service. Decide whether you are troubleshooting a console’s multiplayer test, a particular game, remote access, or a service hosted at home. The relevant result is the test for that device or application.
- Run its own network test. Use the console’s built-in connection test or the application’s current connection-status screen. Record the label and any specific error. A result from one game does not establish the status for every service.
- Find the router’s WAN IPv4 address. Sign in to the home router or ISP gateway and look for an Internet or WAN status page. Menu names vary by model and firmware. Note the WAN IPv4 address shown there.
- Compare it with your public IPv4 address. Check the public address from a reputable external address-check service and compare it with the router’s WAN address. A mismatch can indicate an upstream NAT layer. VPNs, address changes, or multi-WAN configurations can complicate the comparison, so treat it as a clue rather than proof.
- Check the network layout. If an ISP gateway feeds a second router, both devices may be routing or performing NAT. A private WAN address on the second router is a clue that it sits behind another device.
- Ask the ISP to confirm the arrangement. In particular, ask whether the connection uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), whether a public IPv4 address is available, and what options apply to your service.
How to recognize CGNAT or double NAT
CGNAT: translation at the ISP
CGNAT means the ISP also performs address translation, typically sharing public IPv4 addresses among subscribers. A router WAN address in 100.64.0.0/10 falls within the shared address space associated with CGNAT; Cisco describes ISPs assigning addresses in this range to subscriber router WAN interfaces. A private WAN address can also point to an upstream network layer. Neither observation alone confirms your ISP’s exact setup, so ask the provider. See Cisco’s CGNAT guide.
To interpret the comparison: if your router’s WAN IPv4 is public and matches the address observed externally, that is consistent with the router being directly reachable at that address. If the WAN address is private or in the shared range, or differs from the externally observed address, another layer may be involved. An ISP gateway, CGNAT, a VPN, or other routing arrangements can produce different explanations.

Double NAT: two routing devices you may control
Double NAT often occurs when a router is connected to an ISP gateway that is also routing. Identify which device is doing the routing before changing settings. Depending on the equipment and ISP, a documented bridge, access-point, or pass-through mode may remove an unnecessary routing layer. The exact option and steps vary; consult the manuals and provider instructions for both devices.
Choose a troubleshooting step based on what you found
One router, public WAN address, application still reports a problem
Start with the current network guidance for the exact console, game, or service. If its documentation recommends UPnP or particular port-forwarding rules, follow those instructions and the router manual. Some routers require a stable local address for the device receiving forwarded traffic; reserve one if the router’s documented procedure calls for it. These settings may help a particular connectivity problem, but they are not universal fixes.

Two user-controlled routing devices
Check whether the ISP gateway or downstream router supports a documented bridge, access-point, or pass-through configuration. Make one change at a time and retest the same application. Do not disable firewall or routing features blindly, and do not use a broad DMZ setting as a default workaround.
Router WAN address is private or in the CGNAT shared range
Port forwarding on your own router cannot create an inbound path through an ISP-side NAT layer you do not control. TP-Link’s guidance states that internet port forwarding requires a public WAN IP. Ask your ISP whether it can provide a public IPv4 address or another supported solution; availability and terms depend on the provider and service. See TP-Link’s port-forwarding FAQ.

Why port forwarding may not work
- The router does not have a public WAN IPv4 address. A rule on a subscriber router cannot forward traffic through an upstream ISP NAT layer. Confirm the address and ask the ISP about CGNAT or public IPv4 service.
- There is another router upstream. A gateway and a second router may each be translating traffic. Check the physical layout and the WAN status on the device where you created the rule.
- The rule does not match the application’s requirements. Ports and protocols are application-specific. Use current instructions from the platform or game rather than copying a generic port list.
- The destination device’s local address changed. If the rule points to an old address, it may no longer reach the intended device. Follow the router’s instructions for reserving a stable local address.
- The service or device is not listening or otherwise ready. A forwarding rule alone does not start a service or guarantee that it accepts connections. Check the application’s own status and documentation.
UPnP can let compatible applications request mappings automatically, while port forwarding lets you configure specific mappings yourself. Whether either is appropriate depends on the application, router, and security needs. Use only settings supported by the relevant documentation, and test after each change.

What to record before changing settings
- The exact console, application, or service reporting the problem and its own NAT or connection-test result.
- The router or gateway WAN IPv4 address and the externally observed public IPv4 address, checked close together in time.
- Whether a VPN is active, whether the address may have changed, and whether more than one router is routing traffic.
- The application’s current official networking instructions and the router manual for the exact model and firmware.
These details help distinguish an application-specific connectivity issue from a local router configuration or ISP-side NAT. Change one setting at a time and rerun the same test so you can tell whether the change affected the reported problem.
