Young worker ants usually begin with jobs inside the nest, especially caring for eggs, larvae and other brood. As workers mature, they are more likely to take on tasks outside the nest, including foraging. Biologists call this age-linked change in task preference age polyethism (also called temporal polyethism).
That pattern is common, not universal. Species, colony conditions and the demands of a particular nest can change which workers perform each job. A leaf-cutter worker may tend brood and a fungus garden when young, while an older worker carries out foraging; research on Ectatomma vizottoi shows a similar inside-to-outside tendency without establishing one timetable for every ant.

How age polyethism organizes a colony
An ant colony functions as a single system even though no worker receives a complete schedule. Individual workers tend to specialize in different activities, and age is one factor associated with those preferences. The term age polyethism describes a worker becoming more likely to perform certain tasks as it grows older. In many species, the usual direction is from work near the brood toward work at the nest’s edge and beyond.
This is a tendency in behavior, not a set of birthday-based job assignments. A study may find that younger workers spend more time inside and older workers forage more often, yet that does not mean every worker changes jobs at exactly the same age. The best-supported generalization is the direction of the shift: young workers are commonly associated with internal duties, and older workers are more often associated with external duties.

Young workers’ first jobs are usually inside the nest
Brood care
Brood care includes looking after the colony’s developing young, such as eggs and larvae. Workers remain near the brood, tend it and carry out the routine care needed inside the nest. Research on more than one ant species reports greater participation by young workers in brood care and other within-nest activities.
This arrangement places newly mature workers where the colony’s developing brood is concentrated. It also gives the colony a group of workers whose primary contribution is maintenance inside the nest rather than immediate activity outside it. “Young” here means relatively young compared with nestmates, not a universal number of days that applies to all ants.
Fungus-garden care in leaf-cutter ants
Leaf-cutter ants provide a distinctive example. In the studied leaf-cutter group, young workers tend the brood and help care for the colony’s cultivated fungus garden. They also care for pupae. Fungus-garden maintenance is a special feature of leaf-cutter biology and should not be treated as a standard duty of every ant species.

When workers begin taking outside jobs
Foraging generally appears later
Foraging is the clearest outside-nest task associated with older workers in the cited studies. Older workers are more likely to leave the nest, search for resources and bring food or other materials back to the colony. In one leaf-cutter study, workers had to reach a minimum age before they foraged. That threshold belongs to the species and conditions studied; it is not a universal age for all ants.
Research on Ectatomma vizottoi also found an age-related difference: younger workers were more involved in brood care and other internal activities, while older workers participated more in maintenance, especially foraging. The result supports a broad progression from inside work toward outside work, but it does not supply a colony-wide timetable that can be transferred to another species.
Waste handling and other edge-of-nest work
Older workers do not only collect food. In the studied Acromyrmex subterraneus brunneus leaf-cutter colonies, older workers were associated with foraging and work in the waste chamber. Waste handling is another example of a task located away from the brood and central nest activities.

Because these observations come from particular colonies, they are best used as examples of how age-linked organization can look in practice. They do not establish that every older worker must forage or that every species assigns waste work to its oldest workers.

The complete worker workload is broader than brood care and foraging
Worker ants collectively perform the jobs that keep a colony alive. A University of Minnesota Extension overview, reviewed in 2024, lists nest expansion, food gathering, care of eggs and larvae, and defense of the nest among worker duties. These responsibilities are shared across the colony and should not be turned into a rigid sequence in which every worker performs each one at a predetermined age.
Nest expansion
Workers may enlarge or modify the nest as the colony grows or conditions change. The available evidence identifies nest expansion as a worker responsibility, but it does not establish one age class that performs it in all ants.
Food gathering
Food gathering is the broad colony function that includes foraging. Studies of the species described above associate outside foraging more strongly with older workers, while younger workers remain more involved in internal care. Other colonies may distribute food-related work differently.
Nest defense
Defense is also a collective worker duty. The cited overview names it as part of worker labor, but the species-specific studies summarized here do not justify assigning defense to a universal “old-worker” stage. Colony threats and local conditions can influence which workers respond.

What the species studies actually show
Comparing the cases helps separate the recurring pattern from details that belong only to one species.
| Study or example | Younger-worker pattern | Older-worker pattern | What can safely be generalized |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leaf-cutter ants, 2023 study | Brood care; in this group, care of the fungus garden and pupae | Outside activity, including foraging after a species-specific minimum age | Supports an age-linked move from internal work toward foraging; no universal age |
| Ectatomma vizottoi, 2011 study | More brood care and other within-nest activity | More maintenance activity, especially foraging | Shows age-related task differences in another species |
| Acromyrmex subterraneus brunneus record | Brood and fungus-garden tasks | Foraging and waste-chamber work | Illustrates distinct internal and external assignments in a leaf-cutter |
| University of Minnesota Extension overview, reviewed 2024 | Workers collectively expand the nest, gather food, care for eggs and larvae, and defend the nest | Defines the wider worker workload; it is not an age timetable | |
Why “young” and “old” are relative terms
Ant workers do not follow one cross-species calendar. Development rates, colony organization and task demands differ among species. A minimum foraging age measured in one leaf-cutter cannot be applied to a pavement ant, carpenter ant or another leaf-cutter species without evidence from that species.
“Older workers forage” also describes a statistical tendency. A colony can contain exceptions, and a worker’s current task may reflect what the nest needs. The studies summarized here compare age groups within named species and colonies; they do not establish a fixed schedule for all ants.

A worker’s likely progression, without an artificial timetable
- Early adult work inside the nest: A relatively young worker is more likely to remain near brood and perform internal care.
- Additional internal duties: Depending on the species, the worker may help with fungus-garden care, pupae or other nest maintenance.
- Transition toward external work: With increasing age, the worker becomes more likely to take assignments farther from the brood and nest center.
- Foraging and related outside tasks: Older workers commonly take on foraging; in some species they also handle waste-chamber work or other maintenance outside the brood area.
This sequence is a useful description of the pattern observed in the cited cases, not a promise that every worker passes through identical stages. The timing and the exact tasks remain species- and colony-dependent.

How to interpret observations in a real colony
If you watch an ant colony, seeing small or apparently young workers around larvae is consistent with the documented pattern, but appearance alone cannot establish a worker’s age. Likewise, a worker carrying food outside is evidence of foraging behavior, not proof that it belongs to a universal age class.
Reliable conclusions require comparing behavior with worker age using the methods appropriate to that species. The research described here reports age-related differences after studying particular colonies; casual observation should therefore be described as “consistent with” age polyethism rather than as a precise age diagnosis.
Common misconceptions about young worker ants
“Every young worker only cares for larvae.”
No. Brood care is a common early assignment, but young workers can have several internal duties. In leaf-cutter ants, fungus-garden and pupae care are part of the documented young-worker workload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“Every old worker leaves the nest to forage.”
No. Older workers are more likely to forage in the cited studies, but age is not an absolute command. Colonies have multiple jobs, and the studies do not establish that every older worker forages.
“There is one exact age when foraging starts.”
No general age has been established. One leaf-cutter study reports a minimum age for foraging in the species examined. That finding should remain attached to that species and study rather than being converted into a universal number.
“Age determines every colony job.”
Age is one organizing factor among several. The evidence supports age-related task preferences, while the broader worker list—nest expansion, food gathering, brood care and defense—shows that colony labor is more varied than a two-step young-versus-old rule.
Bottom line
Young worker ants commonly start with brood care and other work inside the nest. As they mature, many become more likely to forage and perform other outside tasks. This inside-to-outside shift, called age polyethism, is a recurring pattern rather than a universal timetable. Species such as leaf-cutters add fungus-garden care to the young-worker role, while studies of Ectatomma vizottoi and Acromyrmex subterraneus brunneus show that the exact assignments vary with the colony and species.
