Samsung DeX needs three things: a Galaxy model that supports the specific DeX route you want, a compatible display connection, and (only if you want desktop-style pointer and typing) a keyboard or mouse. Wired DeX uses HDMI; wireless DeX uses a Miracast-capable TV or monitor. Docks are optional, and DeX on a Windows PC follows different compatibility rules from connecting to a TV or monitor.
Check Samsung’s current US compatibility list for your exact model before buying an adapter or display. Support differs between wired, wireless, PC and tablet-only modes, even within the same Galaxy family.

Start by choosing the DeX route
DeX is not one universal accessory standard. The Galaxy model, software version and destination screen determine what you can use. Samsung documents four practical routes: a cable to a TV or monitor, a docked cable setup, wireless DeX to a compatible display, and DeX on a Windows PC. Certain tablets can also run DeX on their own screens.
| Route | What you need | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Wired TV or monitor | Supported Galaxy device; DeX cable, HDMI cable or compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter; display with HDMI input | USB-C alone does not guarantee DeX. Confirm the exact model’s wired support. |
| Docked wired setup | Supported Galaxy device; DeX Pad or DeX Station with its power supply; HDMI cable; HDMI display | Some phones and tablets do not physically fit a Pad or Station. |
| Wireless TV or monitor | Supported Galaxy device; Samsung TV from 2018 onward, Samsung Smart Monitor or another Miracast-capable display | Wireless support is model-specific. Distance and network conditions can affect responsiveness. |
| DeX on PC | Supported Galaxy model, compatible Windows computer and Samsung’s PC software | It is a separate feature from external-display DeX and is not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later under current US guidance. |
| Standalone tablet DeX | One of Samsung’s supported Galaxy tablets | DeX runs on the tablet screen; no external monitor is required. |
Samsung’s current US setup and compatibility guidance is documented in Use the Samsung DeX screen on your Galaxy phone or tablet. Because Samsung changes support by model and software release, treat the online list as the authority for a purchase made today.

Which Galaxy devices support DeX?
Do not infer support from the word “Galaxy,” from a USB-C port, or from a phone’s price. Samsung lists compatibility by family and by connection type. A model may support a cable to HDMI but not wireless DeX, or support neither a TV connection nor DeX on a PC.
Wireless DeX families listed for the US
Samsung’s US support page lists wireless DeX for Galaxy S9 through S26 series; Note9, Note10 series and Note20 series; selected Galaxy Fold and Z Fold generations and certain newer foldables; Galaxy A90 5G; and specified Galaxy Tab families. “Selected” matters: the list is not a blanket approval for every Fold, Flip or Tab model.
The same guidance specifically excludes Galaxy Tab S9 FE and Tab S10 FE series from Wireless DeX. It also states that Z Flip7 FE and previous Z Flip models do not support DeX by cable to HDMI, DeX on a PC, or wireless DeX to a TV or monitor. Confirm your exact model designation and regional support before purchasing equipment. The list can differ on Samsung pages for other countries.

Wired support and accessory fit
For wired output, Samsung directs users to a DeX cable, an HDMI cable with a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, or an approved dock. The phone or tablet still has to be a DeX-capable model; an adapter cannot add the feature to an unsupported device.
DeX Pad and DeX Station are optional docks rather than universal requirements. Samsung warns that some devices will not fit in their physical cradle. A thick case can create another fit problem. For a device that cannot seat safely, use a direct DeX cable or USB-C-to-HDMI adapter instead of forcing it into the dock.

What display and cabling does wired DeX require?
Display requirements
The external screen must have an HDMI input. It can be a television, monitor or another HDMI display. Select the display’s matching HDMI source after connecting the Galaxy. A monitor does not need to be a Samsung model for wired DeX; the key requirements are a supported Galaxy device, a compatible signal path and an HDMI input.
Cable and adapter choices
- DeX cable: A purpose-made cable connects the Galaxy directly to HDMI and is the simplest arrangement when your model supports it.
- USB-C-to-HDMI adapter plus HDMI cable: Use an adapter that explicitly supports video output from your Galaxy model, then connect a standard HDMI cable to the display.
- DeX Pad or DeX Station: These provide a docked connection and can keep the phone supported on a desk, but require their power supply and may not fit every device.
Keep the Galaxy unlocked during first connection. Samsung may show a prompt asking you to start DeX or enable Full Desktop mode. If the screen remains blank, verify the display input, adapter orientation and power connection before assuming the phone is incompatible.
How to set up wired DeX step by step
- Check the exact Galaxy model against Samsung’s current DeX compatibility information for wired external displays.
- Connect the HDMI cable to the TV or monitor. If you are using a DeX Pad or Station, connect its power supply and HDMI cable before placing the phone or tablet in the dock.
- Connect the other end through the DeX cable or compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter to the Galaxy. Remove a case if it prevents a firm connection or dock fit.
- Switch the display to the HDMI input you used.
- Unlock the Galaxy. Accept the on-screen DeX prompt, or open Quick Settings and select DeX. On a first run, choose Full Desktop mode if Samsung presents that option.
- Wait for the DeX desktop to appear. The Galaxy can remain usable as a separate device while the external screen shows the desktop workspace.
Save work before disconnecting HDMI. Samsung notes that DeX can restart when the HDMI connection is removed, so an unplugged cable should not be treated as a harmless hot-swap during an active session.
How wireless DeX works
Wireless DeX is desktop output over a display’s wireless-mirroring capability, not ordinary Smart View duplication. Samsung’s FAQ asks, “Does Samsung DeX support Smart View wireless mirroring?” The practical distinction is that DeX presents a desktop workspace with resizable app windows, while Smart View mirrors the phone or tablet screen. A display can support one behavior without supporting the other.
Compatible displays
Samsung identifies Samsung TVs from 2018 onward, Samsung Smart Monitors and other displays that support Miracast screen mirroring as the target devices for wireless DeX. Miracast branding or a manufacturer’s wireless-display specification is more useful than assuming that any television with Wi-Fi will work.

Wireless setup steps
- Turn on the TV or monitor’s wireless-display or screen-mirroring function.
- On the Galaxy, open Quick Settings and choose DeX, or open the DeX option under Connected devices, depending on the One UI version.
- Select the TV or monitor from the discovered-device list.
- Accept the connection request on the Galaxy and, if shown, on the display.
- Keep the devices within a practical range and avoid congested wireless conditions if the pointer or windows feel delayed.
Some Galaxy tablet FE models do not offer Wireless DeX, including the Tab S9 FE and Tab S10 FE series identified by Samsung. A compatible TV cannot overcome that device-side limitation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeyboard, mouse and other controls are optional
You can start DeX without buying a keyboard, mouse or dock. For desk work, Samsung documents USB and Bluetooth keyboards and mice. Depending on the device and setup, the Galaxy itself can act as a touchpad, while an S Pen or a keyboard cover can provide other input methods.
USB accessories
With a dock that exposes USB ports, plug in a wired keyboard or mouse. With a direct adapter, you may need a USB-C hub that supports both HDMI and USB peripherals; confirm that the hub is compatible with your Galaxy and supplies adequate power. An accessory that only charges may not carry video or USB data.
Bluetooth accessories
Pair a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse in the Galaxy’s Bluetooth settings before or after starting DeX. Bluetooth avoids extra cables but adds battery use and another pairing step. Keep a touchpad or the Galaxy’s on-device controls available for first-time setup in case the accessory does not reconnect.
Using the Galaxy as a touchpad
When DeX offers the touchpad option, follow the on-screen gesture instructions on the Galaxy. This is useful for a temporary presentation or hotel-room setup and means a mouse is not a prerequisite.

DeX on a PC is a different compatibility decision
Connecting a Galaxy to an HDMI monitor and running DeX inside Windows are separate features. DeX on PC requires a supported Galaxy model, compatible Windows software and Samsung’s PC-side support. Samsung’s current US guidance says DeX on PC is not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later and directs users toward Link to Windows instead.
Do not buy a USB-C cable for a PC expecting it to provide the same result as a TV connection. First check Samsung’s PC compatibility page for your model and software version, then install the supported Windows component if your device qualifies. If your phone has moved to Android 15/One UI 7 or newer, use the alternative Samsung recommends rather than troubleshooting a feature that is no longer supported for that software combination.
Standalone DeX on Galaxy tablets
Some tablets run DeX directly on their own display. Samsung’s current workspace instructions list Tab S4, Tab S6, Tab S7, Tab S8, Tab S9, Tab A9+, Tab S10, Tab S11, Tab A11+ and Z TriFold families for standalone tablet DeX. Availability still depends on the exact model and software build.
Standalone mode is separate from external-display DeX. A tablet can offer a DeX workspace on its own screen without offering wireless output, and a tablet that supports an HDMI monitor does not need standalone mode to use that monitor. For the latest mode-specific details, consult Manage workspaces in Samsung DeX mode.

Troubleshooting by symptom
Nothing appears on the TV or monitor
- Confirm the display is set to the HDMI input used by the cable.
- Reconnect the adapter firmly at both ends and try another HDMI input or cable.
- Check that the Galaxy model supports wired DeX, not just USB-C charging or file transfer.
- If using a dock, connect its power supply and remove a case that prevents full seating.
The wireless display is not listed
- Enable Miracast or screen mirroring on the display.
- Verify that the display is a Samsung TV from 2018 onward, a Samsung Smart Monitor or another Miracast-capable model.
- Check the Galaxy’s model-specific Wireless DeX support; FE exclusions and Z Flip exclusions are significant.
- Move the devices closer and reduce competing wireless traffic.
DeX starts, but the pointer or typing does not work
- Reconnect or re-pair the USB or Bluetooth accessory.
- Use the Galaxy as a touchpad while pairing is repaired.
- Check whether the dock or hub provides USB data rather than power only.
DeX on Windows no longer launches
Check the Android and One UI version first. Samsung’s current US documentation excludes Android 15 with One UI 7 or later from DeX on PC and points users to Link to Windows. This does not imply that HDMI or wireless TV DeX is unavailable on the same phone.
A pre-purchase checklist
- Write down the exact Galaxy model number, including FE, Flip, Fold or regional suffixes.
- Choose the destination: HDMI TV/monitor, Miracast display, Windows PC or tablet-only workspace.
- Verify support for that route on Samsung’s current US page, rather than relying on family names or a USB-C port.
- For wired use, obtain a compatible DeX cable or USB-C-to-HDMI adapter and an HDMI display.
- Add a DeX Pad or Station only if its physical fit and power requirements suit your device.
- Buy a keyboard or mouse only if you want conventional desktop input; DeX can operate with touchpad, S Pen or touch controls in supported setups.
- Save open work before unplugging HDMI, because Samsung documents a possible DeX restart.
Samsung’s DeX frequently asked questions cover the Smart View distinction and PC support. Use that page together with the model-specific connection instructions when software updates or regional differences make an older accessory guide unreliable.
