You can play PlayStation games on a computer in two fundamentally different ways. The PlayStation Plus PC app streams eligible games from Sony’s catalog and requires a PlayStation Plus Premium membership, an adult account, a compatible Windows PC, broadband and a controller. PS Remote Play instead streams games from your own PS4 or PS5, so you must own the console and have the game available on it.
For the PlayStation Plus PC app, Sony’s US support page states a minimum broadband speed of 5 Mbps and recommends a wired connection. That figure is a service requirement, not a guarantee of low latency or uninterrupted play.

First, choose the right way to play
The phrase “stream PlayStation games on PC” can describe three different services. Selecting the wrong one is the most common cause of failed setups, missing games or unexpected subscription requirements.

If you want to play without owning a console, the PlayStation Plus PC app is the relevant option. If you already own a PS4 or PS5 and want to access your own library, Remote Play is the appropriate route.

Requirements for PlayStation Plus streaming on a PC
Premium membership and an adult account
Sony’s US PC support page requires an adult PlayStation account and an active PlayStation Plus membership. Sony’s membership page identifies the Premium tier for PC streaming. Plan names, prices and availability vary by country and can change, so check the membership page for your region before paying. A lower PlayStation Plus tier should not be assumed to include PC streaming.
What you can stream
The official membership description says Premium members can stream a selection of PS4 games in the Game Catalog and selected Classics Catalog games on a compatible PC through the free app. Catalog membership is not permanent: games can be added or removed, and an individual PS4 title may be unavailable for streaming even when it appears in the broader service. The published PC information does not state that PS5 games stream directly to a PC through this app.
Internet connection
Sony lists “Broadband with a minimum speed of 5 Mbps” for the PC app and recommends a wired connection. This is a minimum throughput threshold. It does not promise a particular resolution, input response, image quality or freedom from dropouts. Latency, Wi-Fi interference, congestion and other devices using the connection can matter as much as the headline speed.

- Connect the computer to the router with Ethernet when possible.
- If you must use Wi-Fi, use the least congested band available, stay close to the router and pause large downloads or video uploads.
- Test the connection at the time you normally play; a result taken at a quiet time may not represent evening congestion.
- Keep the PlayStation app and controller firmware current, because connection problems can be caused by software as well as bandwidth.
Computer specifications listed by Sony
The US support page currently displays the following figures. Because the operating-system wording is dated, verify the live download page immediately before installation; a current app may impose newer requirements.

These are Sony’s published service specifications, not an independent performance test. A computer that meets the minimum may still deliver a poor experience if its network, drivers or background load are problematic.
Controller, sound and chat
A compatible controller is required. Sony explicitly names the DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller for the PC service. Some third-party PC controllers that use XInput may work, but Sony says full compatibility is not guaranteed. The support page does not present every PlayStation controller as a confirmed PC-app option.

Route sound through the computer’s speakers or headphones. Sony states that a headset plugged into the controller does not work for audio routing in the PC app. Party Chat is not currently supported in PlayStation Plus on PC, so plan to use a separate communication method if you need voice coordination.

Game add-ons and downloadable content cannot be used while streaming a PlayStation Plus catalog game. A compatible title may support local multiplayer, but Sony limits PC-app local play to two players. Whether a particular game supports two-player input remains title-specific.
How to start PlayStation Plus streaming on Windows
- Confirm your region and plan. Open the official PlayStation membership information for your country and verify that Premium includes PC streaming where you live.
- Prepare the account. Sign in with an adult PlayStation Network account. Child accounts do not satisfy the PC support page’s stated requirement.
- Check the computer. Compare Windows, processor, memory, storage, sound and USB details with the current PC-app download page. Treat the Windows 8.1/10 listing as a prompt to verify, not as proof that a newly released app still supports those versions.
- Install Sony’s PlayStation Plus PC app. Download it from Sony’s official PlayStation site, install it, and sign in with the account holding Premium.
- Connect the controller. Pair or plug in a DUALSHOCK 4, or test another PC-compatible controller knowing that XInput support is not guaranteed. A USB connection can help isolate wireless pairing problems.
- Improve the network before launching a game. Use Ethernet where practical, stop competing traffic and ensure the computer is not switching between networks.
- Choose a streamable title. Browse the catalog inside the app. Check the game’s availability there rather than assuming every PS4 or Classics Catalog entry can be streamed.
- Set up audio independently. Select the computer’s speakers or a headset connected to the computer, not a headset connected to the controller.
How Remote Play differs and how to set it up
Remote Play is a control-and-video link to your own console. It does not provide Sony’s cloud catalog and does not turn a computer into a substitute for a PS5 or PS4. Sony’s Remote Play page supports Windows and Mac, and the service works over a high-speed network.

- Prepare the console. Sign in on the PS5 or PS4 with the account you intend to use remotely and enable Remote Play in the console’s settings.
- Make the game available locally. Remote Play uses the console’s installed or otherwise available games. Sony’s announcement specifically distinguishes the service from cloud streaming by saying the title must be downloaded to the PS5 first.
- Install the official Remote Play application. Use Sony’s current Windows or Mac download and sign in with the same account as the console.
- Connect a controller to the computer. Sony lists DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4 controllers for the PC/Mac Remote Play page and specifies a USB cable connection to the computer.
- Start the console connection. Select the PS5 or PS4 in the app and follow the on-screen pairing instructions. The console must be powered on or configured for the supported rest mode features.
Remote Play can expose games that are not in the PlayStation Plus catalog, but it inherits the console’s availability, account permissions and installed-game requirements.

Sony’s current US cloud-streaming page describes selected PS5 games streamed to PS5 consoles or PlayStation Portal with Premium. It says 5 Mbps upload and download are needed to establish a session and recommends the following speeds for those PS5/Portal streams:

Those figures apply to the PS5/Portal cloud-streaming service described on that page, not to the PlayStation Plus PC app. Sony’s listed countries for that service are Canada, the United States, Japan, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Overseas territories are excluded from that list, and the live page should be checked because coverage can change.

Common failures and practical fixes
The app says the connection is too slow
Recheck the 5 Mbps minimum with the computer connected to the same network and at the same time of day you play. Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet, stop cloud backups and downloads, and restart the router. A speed test above 5 Mbps does not eliminate latency or packet-loss problems, so a wired test is the most useful next comparison.
The game is missing
Check whether you are looking at the PC app’s streamable catalog rather than the full PlayStation Plus listing. Catalog titles rotate, selected Classics games are included, and some PS4 games are not streamable. A PS5 game appearing in a console cloud-streaming announcement does not prove that it is available in the PC app.
The controller connects but does not respond
Reconnect it before launching the game, try USB instead of Bluetooth, and remove duplicate controller devices from Windows. If it is a third-party XInput model, compatibility is not guaranteed by Sony; a DUALSHOCK 4 is the explicitly named PC-app option.
There is no sound or voice chat
Select the computer’s speakers or headphones in Windows and the app. A headset plugged into the controller is not supported for PC-app audio routing. Party Chat is unavailable in the PC app, so use a separate voice-chat application when necessary.
You expected add-ons or more than two local players
DLC cannot be used while streaming a PlayStation Plus catalog game. Local multiplayer is limited to two players on PC and only works when the individual game supports it.
What to verify before subscribing
- Your country offers the required Premium benefits and PC streaming.
- The exact games you want appear as streamable in the current PC catalog.
- Your Windows version still meets the current app download page, not only the older specification shown on the support page.
- You have a DUALSHOCK 4 or another controller you have tested with the app.
- Your connection can sustain at least 5 Mbps and preferably uses Ethernet.
- You do not depend on DLC, controller-headset audio or PC Party Chat for the games you plan to play.
The practical dividing line is simple: Premium plus the Windows app gives access to Sony’s supported PS4 and selected Classics streaming catalog, while Remote Play gives access to games running on your own PS4 or PS5. Neither route should be described as unrestricted PS5 game streaming to a PC.
