The exact requirements depend on the site: a portfolio, business brochure, blog, online store and member portal do not need the same tools or infrastructure.
What do I need to make a website?
At minimum, you need something to publish, a way to publish it, and a plan for the people who will use it. A domain name gives the site an address; hosting or a hosted publishing service makes its content available online. Some platforms combine hosting and design tools, so buying separate hosting is not always necessary. Use the checklist below to work out what your particular project needs before choosing tools.

1. Purpose and goals
Write down the main job of the website: inform visitors, showcase work, attract leads, publish articles, sell products, take bookings or support a community. Connect that job to the wider personal or business goal. A site built to generate inquiries needs a different structure and features from one meant to publish a portfolio or sell products.
2. Audience and visitor tasks
Identify the people the site is for, then list what they should be able to find out or do. Put those tasks in priority order. For example, a potential customer may need to understand a service, see evidence of past work and find a way to get in touch. This list helps determine what belongs on the home page, what deserves its own page and which features are worth adding.

3. Budget, timetable and people
Plan for both creation and ongoing maintenance. Costs and effort can depend on the number of pages, how often they change, visual identity, forms, multimedia, translations, databases, training, licenses and whether you need outside help. Set a realistic timetable and decide who will plan, write, design, build and maintain the site. If one person will handle several roles, account for the time involved in keeping it current.
4. A domain name
Choose a name that is memorable, easy to spell and appropriate for the project, then check whether it is available. A domain name is a name in the Domain Name System (DNS), not the website itself. As ICANN explains, hosting or another service is needed to make an internet presence accessible. Register a chosen domain through an accredited registrar or reseller.

5. A platform and a way to publish
Choose a route that fits your need for control, available skills, budget and willingness to handle maintenance. A hosted builder or cloud content management system (CMS) may bundle hosting, templates and optional features. A self-hosted CMS requires a separate hosting service and usually more setup and maintenance, but can offer more flexibility and customization. A custom or outsourced build is another route when the project or team calls for it.

There is no universally best route. Compare the work you need to publish, the control you want, the skills available to you and who will look after the site once it is live. The Australian Government’s website planning guide outlines the trade-offs between hosted and self-hosted approaches; its advice is business-focused and does not establish requirements for every jurisdiction or project.

6. A page structure and design direction
Sketch a simple sitemap before building. Group related information so visitors can navigate without having to guess. Depending on the project, pages might include Home, About, Contact, services or products, an FAQ, a blog, reviews or terms. Include only pages that support a real visitor task or project need. Choose a visual direction that suits your identity, while keeping navigation and page layouts usable.
7. Content and media
Draft the essential copy and gather the images, video, logo and other visual assets the site will need. Clear language, useful headings and accessible content help visitors understand the information. Make sure you have the rights and permissions to use the media you select. Preparing content early also makes it easier to spot missing pages and avoid designing around material that is not ready.

8. Features, accessibility and security
Choose features according to what visitors need to do, not because they are available in a platform. A basic informational site may need little beyond navigation and contact details; other projects may need forms, search, booking, newsletter signup or ecommerce.

Include mobile usability and accessibility in the design from the start. Plan for strong passwords, two-factor authentication where available, and regular updates. If you choose a self-hosted installation, assign someone to install security patches for the CMS and its tools promptly.

9. Testing, launch and upkeep
Before launch, check the site on the browsers and devices your audience is likely to use. Work through the important visitor tasks rather than just looking at the home page.
- Test navigation and links, including links between related pages.
- Review page content for missing, outdated or incorrect information.
- Check that layouts and text remain usable on mobile devices.
- Complete key tasks such as submitting a form, requesting an appointment or, for a store, completing a checkout flow.
After launch, let the intended audience know the site is available, gather feedback and keep the information current. Monitor progress against the goals you set at the beginning; that gives you a basis for deciding what to improve next.
