There is no single compatibility range that applies to every PS5 homebrew project. Compatibility depends on the console’s installed firmware and the particular exploit chain a project uses. The PS5 HEN project’s GitHub description lists firmware 1.00 to 4.51; the description’s crawl date is not specified. Separately, Tom’s Hardware reported on September 30, 2026, that a Relapse release covered firmware 7.00 through 13.60. What to verify before drawing a conclusion
- The exact system software version installed on your console.
- The compatibility information for the particular project you are evaluating, rather than a range copied from a different project or an older article.
- When that information was published or updated. Exploit support and firmware requirements change over time.
Community documentation describes PS5 homebrew as dependent on available public exploits and the console’s firmware. For example, the PS5CEMU-HAR HEN setup documentation and Ars Technica’s September 2026 coverage discuss the changing scene. Treat a compatibility claim as a dated, project-specific snapshot—not a promise that it will work on your console.

How updating changes the tradeoff
Updating is not automatically the right or wrong choice for every owner. Sony says system software updates can add features, improve usability, and enhance security. Its PS5 Safety Guide states: “By updating the system software of the PS5 console, you can enjoy additional features, improved usability, and enhanced security.” Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PS5 Safety Guide (English edition).
On the other side, community instructions warn that an update may forfeit compatibility with a particular exploit. Some newer games or game updates may also require newer system software; that does not mean every new release requires the latest version. Decide based on the firmware-specific information for the homebrew project you care about and the actual software and online features you want to use. What Sony’s US licence says about modification
Sony’s US PS5 System Software Licence Agreement prohibits several forms of unauthorized modification and use, including using modified or unauthorized software, bypassing PS5 security or authentication, downgrading, and exploiting system software outside authorized use. The agreement also describes possible remedies if Sony determines its terms have been violated, including disabling some software or PlayStation access and denying warranty, repair, or other services. These are contractual terms and stated possible consequences, not a prediction that every user will face each consequence. Do not assume a factory reset makes modification risk-free
The cited Sony licence terms do not establish that a factory reset removes every effect of an unauthorized modification or prevents restrictions on PlayStation services. Nor does the available material establish a universal clean rollback procedure or guarantee that reconnecting a modified console to online services is safe. Do not treat reset or rollback as a guaranteed way to restore the console to an unmodified state or avoid enforcement.

Official updates and recovery are separate from homebrew
Sony’s Safety Guide says that if an update is unavailable over the internet, system software can also be updated using a game disc or a USB drive. A compatible USB flash drive may therefore be useful for official update or recovery preparation. It is not a jailbreak requirement and does not enable homebrew.
