A PS5 cannot play original PlayStation 2 game discs. The console’s disc drive, including the drive sold for eligible Digital Edition models, supports the disc formats Sony specifies for PS5 and compatible PS4 software—not PS2 game discs.
If your priority is using the discs you already own, buy or keep a PlayStation 2 console instead. A PS5 only becomes relevant when you are considering a separately released digital, remastered, or ported version of a game; that is a different product from reading the original disc.

The direct buying answer
Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide gives the decisive answer: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” That statement covers original PS2 game discs regardless of whether the PS5 was sold with a built-in drive or is a Digital Edition fitted with Sony’s optional drive.
In practical terms, inserting a PS2 disc will not launch the game, install a playable copy, or activate a hidden PS2 emulator. A drive can spin and recognize some kinds of media while still rejecting software from an unsupported PlayStation generation.

Therefore, do not choose a PS5 on the assumption that its disc model will handle a PS2 collection. Choose it for PS5 games, compatible PS4 games, and any specific newer release you have confirmed is sold for PS5. Choose original PS2 hardware when the requirement is native playback of original PS2 discs.
Why having a disc drive does not mean PS2 support
A console drive is a physical reader, not a universal software-compatibility guarantee. The console firmware must support the format, security system, operating environment, and game software for a disc to become playable. Sony lists the disc formats that PS5 supports; PS2 game software is not among the playable game-disc formats.
This distinction explains two common failed assumptions:

- “The disc fits, so the game should work.” Physical size or the ability to insert a disc says nothing about whether the console can execute its software.
- “The PS5 is backward compatible.” Sony’s backward-compatibility language concerns PS4 games. It does not extend that claim to original PS2 discs.
The limitation is about software support, not merely the presence or absence of a drive. Adding a drive to a compatible Digital Edition changes which supported physical media the console can read; it does not add PS2 game compatibility.
PS5 models and the optional drive
Sony’s model groups matter when you are comparing a PS5 with a built-in drive against a Digital Edition. The following distinctions come from Sony documentation, including its UK support material for the model groups. Accessory availability and the exact retail configuration can vary by country, so confirm the model number and local support page before buying.
| Hardware choice | What the drive arrangement provides | Original PS2 discs |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 model sold with a built-in disc drive | Reads the PS5 and compatible PS4 game-disc formats listed by Sony, along with supported video-disc media. | Cannot be played from a disc. |
| Original CFI-1000 Digital Edition | No disc support. | Cannot be played. |
| CFI-2000 Digital Edition with Sony’s separately sold disc drive | Adds the supported disc formats for which that accessory and console model are designed. | Cannot be played; the accessory does not add PS2 support. |
| CFI-7000 Digital Edition with Sony’s separately sold disc drive | Uses the supported accessory arrangement identified for this model group. | Cannot be played; the accessory does not add PS2 support. |
| PlayStation 2 console | Original PS2 platform hardware intended for PS2 game discs. | Native PS2 playback, subject to the console, disc, and regional requirements. |
The most important buying trap is treating the optional drive as a generational upgrade. It is a way to add supported disc media to particular Digital Edition model groups, not a way to turn a PS5 into a PS2.

How to identify the relevant model group
Do not rely only on a seller’s title such as “disc-ready” or “upgradeable.” Ask for the CFI model number printed on the console packaging or chassis and compare it with Sony’s current regional documentation. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition has no disc support. Sony identifies CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 Digital Edition groups as compatible with a separately sold drive, but that compatibility still stops at the formats Sony supports.

PS4 backward compatibility is not PS2-disc compatibility
Sony describes PS5 as backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of PS4 games. Its current PlayStation ecosystem material says more than 4,000 PS4 games are ready to play on PS4 and PS5. A 2020 Sony Interactive Entertainment FAQ used the wording that more than 99% of more than 4,000 PS4 games could be played on PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition.
Both figures refer to PS4 titles. They do not indicate that PS5 can read PS2 game discs, and they should not be used as a proxy for support for earlier generations. When a listing says “backward compatible,” check which PlayStation generation the statement covers and whether it refers to a disc, a digital license, or a separately released version.

What “PS2 emulation” can mean in a purchase question
Playing an original PS2 disc
This is the narrowest and most important interpretation. You own a physical PS2 game disc and want to insert it into a PS5. That use case is not supported. Neither a built-in PS5 drive nor the optional drive for eligible Digital Editions changes the result.
Buying a separate digital or modern release
Some older games may be sold again as a digital edition, port, remaster, or another separately packaged release. Such a release is licensed and delivered as its own PS4 or PS5 product; it is not the PS5 reading your original PS2 disc. Availability is title-specific, so verify the exact game’s PlayStation Store listing, supported platform, and purchase terms rather than assuming every PS2 game has a current version.

The documented consumer feature described by Sony is not PS2-disc playback. This article does not treat unsupported firmware changes or unofficial software as a buying feature: they can introduce compatibility, security, account, and warranty risks, and they do not alter Sony’s published disc-format support.

A buying workflow that avoids the wrong console
- Define the source of the game. Write down whether you need an original PS2 disc, a digital purchase, or a newer port or remaster. If the answer is “original disc,” a PS5 should not be your replacement console.
- Check the PS5 model. For a used or discounted console, obtain the CFI model number and determine whether it is a built-in-drive model, the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition, or a CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 Digital Edition intended for the optional drive.
- Separate two decisions. First ask whether the console can read the physical media. Then ask whether the particular game is available as a supported PS4 or PS5 release. Passing one test does not pass the other.
- Read the game’s actual listing. Look for the platform designation and delivery method. A PS4 or PS5 download is not evidence that the matching PS2 disc will work.
- Check regional documentation. Sony’s model and accessory information can differ by market. Confirm local drive availability, packaging, and activation requirements before paying for a Digital Edition and accessory combination.
- Price the complete setup. If you choose a Digital Edition because it is cheaper, include the separately sold drive if you need supported physical PS5 or PS4 games. Do not add the drive expecting PS2 support.
- Choose the platform that matches the collection. For a physical PS2 library, direct the budget toward a PlayStation 2 console and the connections needed by your television. For current-generation games, compare the PS5 configurations on their own merits.
If you already bought a PS5 and have PS2 discs
There is no settings change that converts the PS5’s supported game-disc formats into PS2 support. Reinstalling the game, updating the console, changing user accounts, or adding the optional drive cannot make an original PS2 disc playable.
If the console is still within a retailer’s return period and PS2 discs were the main reason for the purchase, returning or exchanging it may be more useful than buying accessories. Keep the disc and packaging information available if you are checking a separately released digital version of the same game, because the digital product may have a different platform and licensing model.
The practical alternative for an original-disc library
A PlayStation 2 console is the direct hardware alternative because it is the original platform for these discs. That is native PS2 playback, not PS5 emulation. When shopping for used hardware, verify the console’s condition, the included power and controller equipment, the region and model suitability for your discs, and the seller’s return terms.
Television connectivity is a separate issue. If your display lacks the connectors used by the PS2, a PS2-to-HDMI adapter may address the video connection. It cannot make a PS2 disc work in a PS5, and the quality and compatibility of adapters vary; no particular adapter model is established here.
Common buying mistakes
- Buying the disc-drive PS5 because it “plays older games.” Confirm whether the claim refers to PS4 games rather than PS2 discs.
- Assuming every Digital Edition can accept the accessory. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition has no disc support; Sony identifies later CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups for the accessory arrangement.
- Confusing a re-release with disc emulation. A separately sold download, port, or remaster must be evaluated as its own product.
- Relying on a marketplace description. Seller language can omit the CFI model group or imply broad backward compatibility. Check Sony’s documentation and the physical model number.
- Solving the wrong problem with an adapter. A display adapter can solve a television-connection problem only; it cannot change the PS5’s software support.
Questions to ask before you pay
- Do I need to insert an original PS2 disc, or would a separately released digital version meet my needs?
- What is the console’s CFI model number?
- Is the console a built-in-drive PS5, an original CFI-1000 Digital Edition, or a CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 Digital Edition?
- If it is a Digital Edition, is the supported drive accessory actually available in my region?
- For each game I care about, is there a confirmed PS4 or PS5 release, and is it sold separately from the PS2 disc?
- If I choose original PS2 hardware, does my television need a video adapter?
Bottom line
Do not buy a PS5 for PS2 disc emulation. Sony explicitly excludes PlayStation 2 software from disc playback on PS5. A built-in drive and the optional drive for eligible Digital Edition models support the formats Sony lists, not original PS2 game discs. Buy a PlayStation 2 for native disc playback, or verify a specific modern digital, ported, or remastered release when your goal is simply to play a particular older game.
