Its extended support ended on April 13, 2016, so it should be treated as a legacy system—not a currently supported server platform. Microsoft offered Standard and Premium editions; R2’s advertised additions included network update management, larger Exchange mailboxes, and expanded client access rights.
What is Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2?
SBS 2003 R2 was Microsoft’s “release 2 (R2) update to SBS 2003,” aimed at small-business server environments. It came in Standard and Premium editions. Microsoft’s lifecycle listing records September 1, 2006, as the R2 lifecycle start date; an earlier product-manager post had only scheduled it for the second quarter of 2006.

R2 is now a historical product. Microsoft lists April 13, 2011, as the end of mainstream support and April 13, 2016, as the end of extended support. The dates on Microsoft’s lifecycle page are shown in Pacific Time. Microsoft also cautions that support for the package is determined by the lifecycles of its individual components, so a server’s specific components may have their own lifecycle details. These dates describe SBS 2003 R2, not the separate Windows Server 2003 R2 product. Microsoft’s SBS 2003 R2 lifecycle page

Microsoft’s announcement described several additions compared with SBS 2003. These are period-specific product claims, not evidence of present-day support, service availability, or measured productivity gains.

The launch material also described mobility features associated with Exchange Server 2003 SP2 and Windows Mobile devices: direct push for near-real-time Outlook access, password-policy management, and remote device wipe. Those were features of the period and should not be taken as a compatibility claim for current phones or services.
Guy Haycock, then an SBS Senior Product Manager at Microsoft, wrote on December 6, 2005: “Simply put – SBS 2003 R2 will help small businesses improve their productivity through:” That was a description of Microsoft’s goals for the release, not an independent performance measurement. Standard or Premium: what can be established?
Microsoft’s lifecycle listing confirms both editions. The available product announcement specifically identifies SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition technology as a Premium Edition inclusion. It does not provide a complete side-by-side specification, so other edition differences should not be inferred from that fact alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

|---|---|
| Standard | Listed as an SBS 2003 R2 edition; the cited material does not specify its full feature set. |
| Premium | Included SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition technology, according to Microsoft’s historical announcement. |
If you are identifying an inherited installation, check its actual edition and licensing records rather than assuming a feature from the product family name. CAL rights described for R2 concern access to additional Exchange Server 2003 and SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition servers on the R2 network; they do not establish modern licensing rights.

Is SBS 2003 R2 still supported?
No. Microsoft’s listed extended-support end date was April 13, 2016. A server still running SBS 2003 R2 is outside that product’s Microsoft support lifecycle. The separate lifecycle caveat for individual components does not change the suite’s ended support date. An old installation may continue operating, but continued operation is not the same as receiving security fixes or vendor support.
Where can I find SBS 2003 R2 documentation?
Microsoft’s Download Center lists a PDF archive of retired Windows Server 2003/2003 R2 material, published July 15, 2024. The R2 documentation covers installation, product evaluation, getting started, planning and architecture, deployment, and material shipped with the product. The archive is documentation, not support for the software. Microsoft’s retired Windows Server documentation archive

Can you still buy or upgrade to SBS 2003 R2?
Microsoft’s announcement described historical distribution routes: Software Assurance customers could receive R2 through their fulfillment channel for shipping and handling; customers without Software Assurance could buy an upgrade SKU; and an OEM or system-builder Technology Guarantee was planned for a limited period. These were launch-era arrangements, not current purchasing options. The announcement does not establish present availability of licenses or a supported upgrade path.
