You may still use an editor, language server, shell, build system, test runner, debugger and version-control tools; the difference is that you choose how they fit together and may need to configure or invoke them separately. The trade-off is integration for modularity—not a proven, universal gain or loss in speed.
What counts as coding without an IDE?
There is no sharp boundary between an IDE and an editor. A traditional IDE is understood as a place where editing, project context, running, debugging and other development tasks are brought together. But an editor can also include a terminal, extensions, language-aware features and debugging. Visual Studio Code, for example, describes itself as a code editor while documenting a workbench that brings editing, running, debugging, testing and source control into one environment. It can also work alongside the same command-line tools a developer might run from an external terminal.

So “without an IDE” usually means choosing not to rely on one integrated workbench as the central interface. A developer might edit in a terminal-based or lightweight editor, run builds and tests in a shell, use a separate debugger, and inspect source-control changes with command-line tools. Another developer might use a capable editor with extensions and an integrated terminal; whether that feels like an IDE depends on which features are enabled and how they are used.

What you gain from a modular, shell-centered workflow
You choose the parts of the tool chain
In a shell-centered setup, you select and operate the editor, shell, build tools, test runner, debugger and version-control interface. That makes the tool chain explicit: rather than assuming one workbench supplies a capability, you can select the separate tool that fits your project and decide how to use it. This modularity is a practical consequence of separating functions that an integrated workbench can bring together.
That control can be useful when you want to keep your normal project commands visible and accessible. An editor does not have to replace the shell, and a shell workflow does not prevent you from using an editor with language intelligence. The choice is about where capabilities live and how you connect them, not about rejecting every feature associated with an IDE.
Your shell commands can remain central
When you build, test or run a program from the shell, you work directly with the project’s command-line tools. A GUI editor can also expose a terminal, and the documented VS Code workbench includes one. Consequently, using a terminal does not by itself distinguish an IDE-free setup; the more important distinction is whether the editor’s integrated features are central to the workflow or whether you manage the tools separately.
A shell-centered arrangement can also make the same tools available from different editing environments, provided those tools and their configuration are present in each environment. The flexibility comes with responsibility: the developer must know which command or tool performs each task and how the pieces are configured.
Language features need not belong to one monolithic application
Features such as completion and go-to-definition can be supplied through a language server rather than being built into a single editor. The Language Server Protocol (LSP) standardizes communication between a development tool and a language server. The LSP project’s official description says that a language server provides language-specific capabilities and communicates with development tools over a protocol designed for inter-process communication. Its stated purpose includes making a language server reusable across tools.

In practical terms, an editor with an LSP client can communicate with a language server to provide language features without requiring one particular monolithic IDE. That does not mean every editor automatically has every feature: the editor needs suitable support, and the relevant server must be available and set up. The protocol makes reuse possible; it does not erase configuration or guarantee identical behavior across languages and tools.
You can keep the workflow mixed
A lightweight editor, an LSP client, a terminal and a project’s own build and test commands can form a middle ground. Alternatively, you can use an editor or IDE that exposes a terminal while treating the project’s commands as authoritative. These arrangements preserve direct access to the shell without requiring you to give up every integrated feature.
What you give up—or take responsibility for—without integration
Language intelligence may require setup
Completions, diagnostics, navigation to definitions, references and refactoring are not guaranteed simply because a file is open in an editor. In VS Code, Microsoft documents language-aware completion, navigation and refactoring as capabilities supplied by built-in support and extensions. The exact features available depend on the language and setup. In a more separated workflow, you must identify which editor support, extension or language server supplies the capability you need.
That division can be a benefit if you want to choose components, but it can also create gaps: an editor may open a source file without understanding its language, or one language feature may be available while another is not. Before settling on a setup, check the support for the languages and operations that matter to your project rather than assuming that “editor support” means a complete set of code intelligence.
Navigation and project context can be less unified
An integrated workbench can present files, language features and other project information within a shared workspace. If you split those jobs among an editor, shell and separate tools, you may need to move between them to understand where you are, what changed and how files relate. That is a practical trade-off inferred from the contrast between integrated workbench features and separately operated tools—not proof that one arrangement is always more confusing.

Source control illustrates the difference. VS Code documents source control as part of its workbench, while its command-line interface documentation describes operations such as opening files and folders, navigating to a line and character, and working with diffs and merges. A developer can therefore use an integrated view, command-line facilities or a combination. The separate route gives you control over which interface you use, but you need to know how to reach the information and actions your task requires.
Builds, tests and debugging may need to be connected
In an integrated environment, running and debugging are available as part of a broader workbench. Outside that kind of setup, you may invoke a build tool or test runner in the shell and configure or launch a debugger separately. The relevant steps vary by language, build system and project, so there is no single command or setup recipe that applies to every IDE-free workflow.
Even an IDE does not necessarily infer every project detail. Microsoft’s Visual Studio documentation describes opening and debugging code without a project or solution, but notes that language and build-system needs can still entail a startup file, an installed workload or custom build-task configuration. The lesson is not that an IDE removes setup; it is that whichever approach you choose, the project’s language and build system determine what has to be configured.
More of the maintenance work falls to you or your team
When capabilities are distributed across an editor, extensions, language servers, build tools and other programs, someone has to choose and maintain those components. A shared integrated workbench may reduce the amount of separate setup a developer has to assemble, while a modular approach requires decisions about which pieces to install and how they fit together. This is a practical inference from the documented extension, workload and custom-build-task requirements, not a measured comparison of setup time.
For a team, this makes setup a workflow concern, not just an individual preference. If everyone configures tools differently, the same project may expose different language features or debugging behavior on different machines. Agreeing on the required tools and project commands can make a modular setup more predictable; the sources do not establish one universal method for sharing that configuration.

How the approaches compare in everyday work
| Question | More integrated workbench | Modular or shell-centered setup |
|---|---|---|
| Where do language features come from? | Built-in support and extensions may provide completion, navigation and refactoring; exact capabilities depend on language and setup. | An editor, LSP client and language server can provide features across tools, but they must be available and configured. |
| How do you run and debug? | Running and debugging can be part of the workbench; project-specific setup may still be necessary. | Build and test commands, and potentially debugging, are operated or connected as separate tools. |
| How do you inspect source control? | A source-control view can sit in the same workbench as editing and other project features. | You can use command-line tools or another interface, choosing how to inspect changes, diffs and merges. |
| Who assembles the setup? | The workbench groups capabilities, but extensions, workloads and custom build tasks may still require configuration. | The developer or team chooses and maintains the editor, shell, language support and project tools. |
| Can you work across environments? | Remote arrangements can preserve a local user interface while tools and code run elsewhere, but extension placement matters. | A shell-based tool chain can be used where its components are installed, but each environment still needs the relevant tools and configuration. |
The table describes differences in organization and documented capabilities, not a controlled comparison of performance. Official product and protocol documentation does not establish that either approach is universally faster, produces fewer bugs or leads to better learning outcomes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Remote work adds a separate setup question
A remote or mixed environment makes it important to distinguish the user interface from the place where code and tools run. In Microsoft’s documented VS Code workflow with Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), the editor interface runs on Windows while code, Git, plugins and the server run in WSL. Microsoft notes that some language, linting and debugging extensions need to be installed in the WSL distribution.
This matters because an extension visible in the local editor is not necessarily installed where the code is running. If a language feature, linter or debugger does not behave as expected in this arrangement, check which side of the client-server setup hosts the relevant extension and tools. The WSL guidance describes this particular configuration; it should not be read as a rule for every remote, container or Linux setup.
Choose based on the work your projects require
A one-file edit
For a quick edit that does not depend on complex language navigation, project-specific debugging or a test workflow, a simple editor and the relevant command-line tools may be enough. The key question is whether you can make the change and verify it with tools already available, not whether the editor carries an IDE label.
A mature or multi-language codebase
For a larger project, the value of shared project context, language-aware navigation, diagnostics, source-control views and tests may be more noticeable. An integrated workbench can group these capabilities, while a modular setup can still supply many of them through editor support, extensions and language servers. Check actual support for each language and the project’s build system; the category of editor alone does not tell you what is available.
Best Value
A project with specialized debugging or build requirements
If your work depends on a particular debugger, startup configuration or build process, begin by confirming that your chosen setup can launch it and expose the information you need. An IDE may still require a workload or custom task, while a separate-tool workflow may require you to connect the debugger and build commands yourself. The right choice depends on the required tools and the configuration effort you are willing to own.
A developer who wants both control and convenience
You do not have to choose between a shell and an integrated editor. One workable compromise is an editor with language-server support and a terminal, while continuing to run the project’s own build and test commands. This keeps the shell available and lets the editor provide selected language and project features. Whether that balance is suitable depends on the languages, tools and debugging needs involved.
A practical way to make the decision
- List the tasks you actually perform. Include editing, completion, diagnostics, definition and reference navigation, refactoring, builds, tests, debugging and source-control review. Do not count a feature as available until you know which component provides it.
- Check language and project support. Confirm the editor’s built-in capabilities, required extensions or language servers, and the needs of the build system. Feature availability varies by language and configuration.
- Trace the run-and-debug path. Identify how the project starts, how tests are invoked and whether debugging needs a startup file, workload or custom task. Visual Studio’s documented project-free workflow is an example of opening and debugging without a solution, not a guarantee that all languages need no setup.
- Decide where source control belongs. Choose whether you want a workbench view or separate commands and tools for checking changes, branches, diffs and merges. Use the interface that makes the information you need accessible in your actual workflow.
- Check every execution environment. For remote or WSL work, establish where code, Git, language servers and extensions run. In the documented VS Code/WSL arrangement, some extensions must be installed inside WSL.
- Account for the people maintaining the setup. Decide who installs and updates the necessary components and how team members will know which tools and project commands are expected.
- Try the workflow on a representative task. Use a real edit, build, test and debugging task from the project. Evaluate whether the required capabilities are present and whether moving between tools is acceptable. This is a practical evaluation, not a claim that one approach will make you faster.
What can—and cannot—be concluded about productivity
The available Microsoft documentation explains features, protocols and configuration. It does not provide a controlled comparison showing that coding without an IDE improves speed, reduces bugs or helps developers learn more effectively; nor does it establish the reverse. Treat claims that Vim, Emacs, a modern editor or a full IDE is inherently the more efficient choice as preferences or individual experience unless they are supported by evidence specific to the claim.
