You can use an ESP32 development board as the starting point for light art, DIY music controllers, wearables, sensor projects, or playful moving objects. The “$8” refers to Espressif’s sample reference price for the ESP32-S2-DevKitC-1-N8R2—not a guaranteed current shop price or the cost of a finished project. Your chosen components, power setup, and enclosure determine what else you need.
What does the $8 ESP32 price actually cover?
Espressif lists the ESP32-S2-DevKitC-1-N8R2 at an $8 sample reference price. The listing describes the DevKitC-1 as an entry-level general-purpose development board with exposed pins for breadboard and jumper-wire prototyping. That figure is specific to the named variant and can change; it is not a universal ESP32 price.

The board is a programmable starting point, not a complete project. Depending on what you make, you may also need LEDs, sensors, switches, a display, audio hardware, a motor driver, suitable power components, and an enclosure. No comparable bill of materials or current parts prices are established for these five ideas, so a reliable total build cost cannot be given.
Five creative projects to explore
1. LED art and reactive light
Program a color-changing desk object, a light sculpture that responds to sound, or a small programmable display. An RGB-light example is documented for some other ESP32 family members, including ESP32-C5, C6, and H2; that example does not establish compatibility with every ESP32 board. Check the exact board and LED type before following wiring instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- 2.4GHz Dual Mode WiFi + Bluetooth Development Board
- Support LWIP protocol, Freertos
- SupportThree Modes: AP, STA, and AP+STA
- Ultra-Low power consumption, Compatible with Arduino IDE
- ESP32 is a safe, reliable, and scalable to a variety of applications
Espressif’s Genesis platform illustrates how much a light-oriented build can expand: it includes an 8×8 NeoPixel array and a microphone. Those are platform components, not a promise that they are included with the $8 board.
2. DIY music or MIDI controller
Turn button presses or physical strikes into sounds or MIDI messages. A recent open-source handpan-interface paper describes an ESP32 implementation with real-time audio and MIDI generation, plus an LED sequence guide. Treat it as a design inspiration rather than a ready-made beginner kit: reproducing it requires its own design choices and parts.

- Dual-Core Performance Up to 240 MHz: Run sensor processing, wireless communication, automation logic and connected-device tasks on a 32-bit dual-core ESP32 platform designed for responsive embedded and IoT projects
- Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2: Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks or use Bluetooth Classic and BLE for wireless sensors, smart devices, remote controls, home automation and other connected projects
- Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
- USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
- Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision
Audio projects can require more than the board’s general-purpose pins. Confirm the audio interface and output hardware your design needs, as well as software compatibility, before buying components.
3. Wearable or portable interactive object
A wearable light, motion-responsive badge, or portable sensor can make a compact project with a personal touch. Espressif describes ESP32 as a platform for mobile and wearable electronics, but that broad use case does not determine whether a particular development board suits a specific wearable.

Choose the board, battery, and enclosure around the intended use. A portable design needs an appropriate power arrangement and a safe, secure enclosure; the development board alone does not provide those finished-product details.
4. Sensor experiment or data display
Use a sensor to create a room display, a simple environmental logger, or an object that reacts to a measured condition. Espressif’s getting-started documentation gives a low-power sensor-hub scenario, while Genesis demonstrates a broader collection of inputs that includes a distance sensor.

Pick the measurement first, then verify that the sensor’s electrical interface and power requirements work with your exact board. Decide whether you want to show readings locally, log them, or trigger another response; each choice changes the parts and software involved.

A motor needs an appropriate driver and power arrangement. Do not connect a motor directly to an ESP32 GPIO pin; choose the driver and supply for the motor and your design.

The table is a planning aid, not a parts list: the cited examples do not establish complete, comparable builds, difficulty ratings, or total costs. Start with the output you care about, then check the exact board variant and component requirements before choosing parts.
Getting started with software
Espressif’s Arduino-ESP32 getting-started guide is an official entry point. The Espressif Component Registry includes a simple buildable template and an RGB-light example. Follow the current setup instructions and select the specific board you own; an example for one family member or configuration may not work unchanged on another.
These resources can help you begin experimenting, but they do not establish that all five ideas are beginner-ready or that the same software path fits every project. Let the chosen board, peripherals, and desired result guide your setup.
