Astronomers could map its orbit and physical properties, then test whether its gravity accounts for several features of the outer Solar System. It would not automatically explain every unusual orbit or prove that our Solar System is typical. NASA says the planet has not been discovered and its existence remains debated.
Has Planet Nine been found?
No. NASA’s overview of the hypothetical Planet X says it has not been discovered and that scientists debate whether it exists. The idea gained attention in 2016 when Caltech researchers proposed that the orbits of some very distant objects might be shaped by an unseen planet. That was an inference from orbital patterns, not a telescopic detection.

Here, “confirmed” means astronomers have observed an object and tracked its motion well enough to establish that it is a bound planet in the predicted region. The sources do not set out a formal confirmation protocol, so an interesting candidate or a single unusual observation would not, by itself, settle the question.
What would confirmation let astronomers test?
A detected planet’s positions over time would constrain its orbit and enable measurements of its physical properties. Researchers could then compare those observations with predictions about how the planet’s gravity might shape distant small bodies. This would be a direct test of a hypothesis that currently rests on indirect evidence—not proof that every proposed effect is real.

The planet census
A confirmed planet would show that the known inventory of major planets extends beyond Neptune. “Planet Nine” is the nickname Caltech researchers gave this particular hypothesis, not an official name already assigned to a future discovery. NASA says the discoverer of a new object has naming rights, while a formal name must be approved by the International Astronomical Union.
Orbital patterns among distant objects
The original proposal linked a distant planet’s gravity to the apparent clustering of some remote objects’ orbits. Researchers have also explored whether such a planet could help account for detached, Sedna-like or highly inclined populations. NASA lists other possible implications, including average inclinations among long-period objects, clustered orbital orientations, highly inclined trans-Neptunian objects, retrograde objects between the giant planets, and Neptune-crossing long-period objects. These are proposed explanations, not a list of independently proven consequences.
In 2024, Caltech reported a further proposed test: simulations predicted a population of long-period trans-Neptunian objects whose orbits cross Neptune’s. The team compared its prediction with an observed census of 17 such objects and reported that the match supported the hypothesis. That finding is evidence interpreted in favor of Planet Nine, not a direct observation of the planet.

What are the planet’s predicted size and orbit?
There are no measured properties for an observed Planet Nine because none has been confirmed. In a 2019 update, Caltech researchers estimated a mass of about five Earths and an orbital semimajor axis near 400 astronomical units (AU)—the average distance from the Sun used to describe an orbit. Those are model-based estimates for the hypothesized planet, not established facts.

Caltech also reported that its bias analysis put the chance of the observed orbital clustering being spurious at about one in 500. That figure concerns the clustering under the analysis; it is not a claim that Planet Nine has a 499-in-500 chance of existing. As Mike Brown, one of the researchers, put it, “Though this analysis does not say anything directly about whether Planet Nine is there, it does indicate that the hypothesis rests upon a solid foundation.”
How does Ammonite affect the case?
It complicates one part of the evidence without resolving the overall debate. In 2025, researchers reported 2023 KQ14, nicknamed Ammonite, a fourth known sednoid—a distant object with a Sedna-like orbit. Its perihelion, the closest point in its orbit to the Sun, is 66 AU, and its current orbit does not align with those of the other three known sednoids.
NAOJ co-author Yukun Huang said, “The fact that 2023 KQ14’s current orbit does not align with those of the other three sednoids lowers the likelihood of the Planet Nine hypothesis.” The finding shifts the balance of evidence; it does not by itself rule out the planet. The Nature Astronomy paper discusses other possible explanations for Sedna-like orbits, including stellar encounters, the Sun’s migration, and other processes in the early Solar System.
Would Planet Nine make our Solar System more normal?
It would give astronomers a nearby example of a planet in a mass range that is common among known exoplanets. Caltech’s estimated five-Earth-mass planet could resemble a super-Earth, a broad category of planets more massive than Earth. If confirmed, it would let researchers compare models of planet formation and migration with a planet in our own system.
Best Value
One discovery would not establish that the Solar System’s overall architecture is typical. A planet’s existence and mass would be useful for comparison, but they would not settle how often systems form in the same arrangement as ours.

NASA describes searches using major telescopes and notes that surveys of Kuiper Belt objects can strengthen the evidence or help narrow where to search. Confirmation would depend on finding an object and following its motion, while the gravitational case would continue to be assessed against distant objects and alternative explanations. NASA also notes that the hypothesis may be wrong; the sources do not establish a date by which the question will be settled.
What to read next
For more background, look for Planet Nine books or outer Solar System astronomy books. They are further reading, not equipment needed to see the object: the search described by NASA is a difficult professional effort, and no consumer telescope setup is established here as a way to observe Planet Nine.
