Its official support matrix lists early development support for some standard M4 components, but many essential features are still marked TBA or WIP. M4 Pro and M4 Max support is less advanced in key respects. The current status is development bring-up, not a generally installable Linux system for everyday use.
Can you install Asahi Linux on an M4 Mac?
Not through an official M4 installer at present. The Asahi Linux M4 feature-support table lists “Installer: no” for standard M4 and M4 Pro/Max systems. The general Asahi homepage’s installation invitation and Fedora Asahi Remix announcement do not establish M4 compatibility; the device-specific matrix is the relevant reference.

This distinction matters because early platform work is not the same as a supported installation path. A device-tree entry or a boot-time display image does not mean a usable desktop, and the matrix does not establish successful installation, stability, performance, or day-to-day reliability on M4 hardware.
What works on standard M4 Macs?
The matrix covers the 2024 M4 iMac, Mac mini, and 14-inch MacBook Pro, plus the 2025 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air. It lists a linux-asahi (7.4) device tree for these machines. That is a limited development component, not a declaration that the machines are ready for general Linux use.

| Model group | Support listed | Important gaps in the matrix |
|---|---|---|
| M4 iMac (2024) | No installer; device tree listed as linux-asahi (7.4); main display is boot framebuffer only. |
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, full display support, audio, and many other platform and peripheral functions are TBA. |
| M4 Mac mini (2024) | No installer; device tree listed as linux-asahi (7.4). |
No main-display entry; Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HDMI output, and many other functions are TBA. |
| 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro (November 2024) | No installer; device tree listed as linux-asahi (7.4); boot framebuffer for the main display; keyboard backlighting listed in linux-asahi (7.4). |
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, full display support, keyboard and touchpad support, battery information, audio, HDMI output, and many other functions are TBA. |
| M4 MacBook Air, 13- and 15-inch (2025) | No installer; device tree listed as linux-asahi (7.4); boot framebuffer for the main display; keyboard backlighting listed in linux-asahi (7.4). |
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, full display support, keyboard and touchpad support, battery information, audio, and many other functions are TBA. |
These are the matrix’s model-level entries, not results from independent hands-on testing. In particular, “boot framebuffer” indicates only an early display path; the same table separately lists full display support as TBA.
What about M4 Pro and M4 Max Macs?
Asahi’s matrix lists no installer for the M4 Pro/Max systems it covers: the M4 Pro Mac mini, M4 Max Mac Studio, and M4 Pro/Max MacBook Pro models. Unlike the standard M4 device entries, their device-tree support is marked WIP. Most platform and peripheral functions are TBA, and some entries are unavailable for particular chassis. The project notes that many peripherals depend on DART and PCIe support.

Do not treat “M4” as one uniform support category: the table shows a device tree listed for standard M4 models, while M4 Pro/Max device-tree work is still in progress and not ready for wider use.

At the SoC level, the support table marks these components TBA for M4 and M4 Pro/Max:

Video decoding and NVMe are marked WIP for both chip groups. AICv3 is listed as available in linux-asahi (7.4) for standard M4, while its M4 Pro/Max status is WIP. These entries do not establish a complete graphics, storage, or power-management experience.
The machine-level matrix also marks Wi-Fi and Bluetooth TBA across the listed standard M4 devices. For laptops, keyboard and touchpad support, battery information, and audio remain TBA; HDMI output is TBA for the M4 Mac mini and M4 MacBook Pro. A feature marked TBA should not be read as a promised future addition: Asahi defines it as work not being undertaken at that time.

What do WIP and TBA mean?
Asahi defines WIP as active development that is “not yet ready for wider testing, use or distribution.” TBA means “Active work on this feature is not being undertaken at this time.” The project also says it does not estimate when features that are not ready will be ready. These labels describe status, not a release schedule.

Apple Silicon power management involves multiple hardware blocks, including SMC, PMGR, and PMP. In its August 2026 Linux 7.2 progress report, Asahi Linux contributors describe the challenge of integrating CPU core power management with Linux’s firmware interfaces and explain that proper CPU core power management matters for battery life and efficiency. This is general Apple Silicon context, not a specific promise or feature-status update for M4.
Is an M4 Mac a sensible Linux machine today?
The official support information does not support recommending any M4 configuration for ordinary Linux use. There is no official installer, and essential networking, display, input, audio, power-management, and peripheral support is incomplete or unlisted. If you need a working Linux computer now, choose hardware with an established installation path and subsystem support rather than buying an M4 Mac on the expectation that these gaps are resolved.
Because the M4 support matrix is live documentation, check it again before making a decision; statuses may change.
