Windows is Microsoft’s operating system family for personal computers. It provides the software environment people use to run applications, manage files and hardware, sign in, and do personal or work tasks. Windows 11 is the current client version covered here; Windows 10’s general support ended on October 14, 2025.
What Windows is—and what it does
An operating system coordinates a computer’s hardware and provides the platform on which applications run. Windows supplies that foundation for PCs, including tools for using apps, organizing files, connecting devices, and managing sign-in and security. Microsoft describes Windows 11 as a client operating system and highlights productivity, application compatibility, security, and organizational deployment among its uses.

Windows is used on both personal and organizational computers. People use it for everyday tasks and productivity, while organizations can deploy and manage Windows devices across their workplaces. Many applications and tools used with Windows 10 can also be used with Windows 11, though compatibility should be checked for the specific app, device, and required features.

Windows 11
Windows 11 is the current client version addressed here. It comes in editions for different audiences, including Home and Pro for consumers and Enterprise and Education for organizational settings. Edition matters: available features and update-management options can differ, so check the edition rather than assuming every Windows 11 PC offers the same capabilities.

Microsoft describes Windows 11 feature updates as annual and quality updates as monthly. Its lifecycle guidance gives Home and Pro versions a 24-month servicing timeline and Enterprise and Education versions a 36-month timeline. Home does not support deferring feature updates, so it typically moves to a newer version before the listed servicing end date. Support therefore depends on both the installed version and the edition, not just the name “Windows 11.”
Microsoft’s Windows 11 Home and Pro lifecycle listing gives version 26H2 a servicing period from September 29, 2026, through October 10, 2028, and version 25H2 a period from September 30, 2025, through October 13, 2027. The listed dates are in Pacific Time and can change; consult Microsoft’s lifecycle listing for the version installed on a particular PC.

Windows 10
Windows 10’s final general-availability feature version was 22H2. General support ended on October 14, 2025. A PC running Windows 10 can continue to operate after that date, but Microsoft says it no longer receives ordinary quality, feature, or security updates or technical support. Microsoft documents an Extended Security Updates program for some users who need to keep using Windows 10; check its current terms and whether they apply to you.

Can your PC run Windows 11?
A standard Windows 11 installation requires a compatible 64-bit processor running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of storage. The PC also needs UEFI firmware capable of Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and an HD display at least 9 inches diagonally.

Windows 11 Home also requires internet access and a Microsoft account to complete first-use setup. These are minimum installation requirements, not a guarantee that every app or task will run well: some features and applications need more capable hardware.

How to choose or evaluate a Windows PC
-
Compatibility: Confirm the processor, memory, storage, firmware, TPM, graphics, and display meet Windows 11 requirements.
-
Edition: Compare Home, Pro, or an organizational edition against the features and update controls you actually need.
-
Support horizon: Check the installed Windows version, edition, servicing end date, and update cadence. A Windows 11 label alone does not identify the end of support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Workload: Treat minimum requirements as a baseline, then account for the needs of your applications and games.
