It can add overhead, but the effect depends on your processor and workload; Microsoft does not publish a universal slowdown percentage for Windows 11. The main feature readers usually mean is Memory integrity, which uses virtualization to protect kernel code integrity. Older processors that emulate required execution features can take a bigger performance hit, while driver and app compatibility is a separate concern.
What Core isolation and Memory integrity do
Core isolation is the Windows Security area for protections that isolate core Windows processes in memory using virtualization. Its available controls can differ by Windows version and installed hardware. Memory integrity—also called hypervisor-protected code integrity (HVCI)—is one feature in that area, not another name for the entire Core isolation page.

Memory integrity runs kernel-mode code integrity inside a virtualization-based security (VBS) environment and restricts certain kernel memory allocations. The aim is to make it harder for malware to tamper with the Windows kernel or use low-level drivers to take over a PC. Microsoft describes the protection in its Memory integrity enablement guidance and its Windows Security device-protection overview.

There is no reliable single percentage for the overall slowdown across Windows 11 PCs. The Microsoft guidance explains that older processors may be affected more, but it does not provide a current, representative performance benchmark covering different hardware and workloads. That means claims that Core isolation always causes a noticeable slowdown—or that it reduces gaming frame rates or productivity by a fixed amount—go beyond what these sources establish.

Processor support makes a difference
Microsoft says Memory integrity works better with Intel Kaby Lake and later processors that support Mode-Based Execution Control, and AMD Zen 2 and later processors with Guest Mode Execute Trap. Older processors rely on an emulation called Restricted User Mode; Microsoft says those systems will have a bigger performance impact. This is a qualitative warning, not a percentage or a prediction for every older PC.
Your workload matters, but the effect is not quantified
A performance-sensitive task may make an effect easier to notice than ordinary use, but Microsoft’s cited guidance does not quantify that difference. Treat the impact on your own PC as something to check under the workloads you actually use, rather than assuming that a gaming PC, office PC, or other system will experience a particular penalty.

Check whether Memory integrity is enabled
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Device security, then Core isolation details.
- Check the Memory integrity control and its current state. The available features can vary with Windows version and hardware.
Hardware virtualization must also be enabled in UEFI/BIOS for Memory integrity to work. If the option is unavailable or cannot be enabled, check the PC maker’s guidance for the firmware settings on your model.

Compatibility problems are not the same as slowdowns
Some applications and drivers may be incompatible with Memory integrity. A problem may appear as a device or app malfunction, and Microsoft warns that a boot failure is possible in rare cases. That is a compatibility risk, not proof that the feature is slowing down the whole system.

- If Windows identifies an incompatible driver, check with the device manufacturer for a compatible update.
- If no compatible driver is available, Microsoft says you may need to remove the device or app that depends on it.
- If enabling Memory integrity causes instability or a critical boot error, use Windows Recovery Environment troubleshooting.
Should you turn Memory integrity off?
Make the decision as a tradeoff among kernel protection, performance on your particular machine and workload, and compatibility with the drivers and apps you need. If performance is your concern, compare the PC’s behavior in your normal tasks rather than relying on an assumed universal penalty. If a driver is the problem, seek a compatible update first. Disabling Memory integrity removes this layer of kernel protection, so it is not a cost-free performance tweak.
