Windows 10 updates are software changes delivered through Windows Update to add or improve features and provide fixes and security changes. They come in different types, and whether a Windows 10 PC still receives them depends on its edition and servicing program: general support ended on October 14, 2025.

What does a Windows 10 update do?

Microsoft describes Windows 10 as a service improved through periodic software updates. An update can change operating-system features, fix problems, or address security issues. Not every update does all three, and the kind of change depends on the update type.

Windows 10 version 22H2 was the operating system’s last feature update. That means Windows 10 did not continue to receive routine feature releases after 22H2.

Feature updates, quality updates, and servicing stack updates

These terms describe different roles in Windows servicing. Microsoft’s descriptions distinguish them by purpose and typical impact, not by a guaranteed size or schedule.

Update type Main purpose Frequency and impact
Feature update Adds capabilities and functionality; it can also include fixes and security changes. Less frequent and broader in scope than a typical quality update. Windows 10 version 22H2 was its last feature update.
Quality update Mainly provides smaller fixes and security updates; it may sometimes include new features. More frequent and usually smaller in scope. Exact timing and contents vary.
Servicing stack update (SSU) Improves the servicing stack, the Windows component that installs updates. Maintains the update-installation component; it is not a feature release.

These descriptions do not guarantee that a particular device will receive an update. The Windows version, edition, and applicable servicing program matter.

Are Windows 10 updates still available?

Microsoft ended general Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes under general support. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ identifies version 22H2 as the final Windows 10 feature update.

That end date does not mean every Windows 10 edition has identical update status. Separate servicing applies to eligible Extended Security Updates (ESU) and Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) editions. For example, Microsoft’s August 11, 2026 update notice identifies Windows 10 ESU and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 / IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 in its applicability information. It does not establish that an arbitrary Windows 10 PC is eligible. Check the device’s edition and enrollment to determine its status.

How to check for updates

  1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. If Windows offers an update, select Download & install, then restart if prompted.

Microsoft’s Windows update installation instructions cover this Settings route. Whether an update appears depends on the device’s support status and applicable servicing.

What is the Windows Update Assistant?

The Windows Update Assistant is Microsoft’s utility for manually downloading and installing a feature update on a compatible PC. Microsoft says it supports x86/64 devices and does not run on ARM-based PCs. Since Windows 10 version 22H2 was the final feature update, the Assistant should not be confused with a way to obtain a newer Windows 10 feature version. See Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant guidance for compatibility details.

What to do if an update fails

If Windows Update reports an installation problem, Microsoft points users to the Windows Update Troubleshooter and its update troubleshooting documentation. An error does not by itself show whether the cause is device compatibility, update status, or another installation issue; use the troubleshooting guidance for the specific message.
