The best-known example, Smilodon, was an extinct machairodont cat, not a tiger. Its powerful forelimbs and skull anatomy support a likely close-range hunt: bring prey under control, then deliver a killing bite. The exact bite mechanics remain debated, and other saber-toothed animals may have hunted differently.
What does “saber-toothed predator” mean?
It is a useful label for predators with greatly enlarged, blade-like canine teeth. Those animals did not all belong to one family, and the shared tooth shape does not prove that they hunted alike.

Smilodon belonged to Machairodontinae, an extinct branch of the cat family. Despite the familiar nickname “saber-toothed tiger,” it was not a tiger or a close member of the living pantherine cats. Nimravids, including Hoplophoneus, were a separate carnivoran family sometimes informally called false cats. The National Park Service describes nimravids as hypercarnivores and says some were likely solitary ambush hunters (NPS, “The Big Cats”; NPS, “Nimravid: Saber-toothed Hunter of the Badlands”).

How did Smilodon hunt?
First, it likely had to overpower and restrain prey
The National Park Service describes Smilodon fatalis as a large-bodied carnivore with long upper canines and forearm bones more robust than those of most other large cats. Those forelimbs are consistent with powerful grasping and restraint. A 2007 biomechanical study likewise found that the skull was better suited to biting prey that had already been restrained than to delivering a powerful bite to an animal still struggling freely (NPS, “The Big Cats”; PNAS, “Supermodeled sabercat…”).

Then it likely delivered a close-range killing bite
The same computer-based reconstruction estimated that jaw-muscle-driven bite force was relatively weak compared with that of a lion of similar size. The study proposed that Smilodon brought prey down and held it before biting, with substantial force potentially supplied by the neck muscles. The authors considered a neck bite the most likely target, reasoning that controlling the head could help keep large prey restrained. This is a model-based reconstruction, not a witnessed sequence: the exact bite location and the balance of jaw and neck force remain debated (PNAS, 2007).
The long canines also imposed a physical constraint. The American Museum of Natural History says Smilodon had to open its jaw to about 95 degrees to clear the canine tips for a stabbing bite. That museum figure concerns Smilodon, not every saber-toothed predator (AMNH, “Smilodon: Ancient Saber Tooth Tiger”).

What did saber-toothed predators eat?
Smilodon’s prey varied by place
At Tule Springs, isotope evidence cited by the National Park Service points to bison and camels as well as deer and tapirs among prey eaten by Smilodon fatalis. That is evidence from a particular regional fossil record, not a universal menu for every population. Separately, isotope-based work on specimens from the 1.5-million-year-old Leisey Shell Pit locality suggests that Smilodon there was a generalist. Together, these findings caution against assigning the species one narrow, fixed prey list (NPS, “The Big Cats”; New York State Museum, “Prey use and canine development in saber-toothed carnivores”).
Nimravid examples come from a different fossil setting
For nimravids in the White River Badlands, the National Park Service gives likely prey ranging from sheep-sized oreodonts to small horses and small rhinocerotids. Some nimravids are considered likely solitary ambush predators in that context. Those observations should not be used to assign Smilodon anatomy, prey or kill mechanics to nimravids, or vice versa (NPS, “Nimravid: Saber-toothed Hunter of the Badlands”).

What can fossils tell us—and what remains uncertain?
Bones and teeth provide evidence about anatomy and growth; isotope signatures can help reconstruct diet; and biomechanical models test how an animal’s body might have worked. These are indirect routes to behavior. They can support a plausible hunting sequence without establishing every movement or proving that all individuals hunted the same way.
The concentration of Smilodon remains at La Brea has uncertain causes. The American Museum of Natural History notes that some researchers have proposed scavenging to explain the site, but that site-specific possibility does not establish that Smilodon was primarily a scavenger (AMNH, “Smilodon: Ancient Saber Tooth Tiger”).

In 2021, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and La Brea Tar Pits described lower-back trauma in a Smilodon vertebra as consistent with grappling large Ice Age prey such as bison. A hip-dysplasia case was interpreted as possibly indicating social support. These cases can suggest aspects of behavior, but they do not prove a single social structure for the species (La Brea Tar Pits, “These Hips Don’t Lie”).

How quickly did Smilodon grow its signature teeth?
An American Museum of Natural History report published July 1, 2015, gives a reported eruption rate of 6 millimeters per month for Smilodon fatalis’s permanent upper canines—about twice the rate in African lions. It says the dagger-like canines were not fully developed until about age 3. These figures concern Smilodon fatalis, not all saber-toothed lineages. The report’s coauthor Z. Jack Tseng put tooth growth in the context of hunting ability: “For predators such as big cats, an important determinant of an individual’s full hunting ability is the time required to grow their weapons—their teeth,” (AMNH, “How the Smilodon Got Its Teeth,” July 1, 2015).
