Fallout 5 is in preproduction, but Bethesda has not announced a release date, release window, or supported platforms. Bethesda Game Studios says The Elder Scrolls VI remains its primary development focus, with most of the team working on it. That makes Fallout 5 a long-term project, but the studio has not assigned it a year.
Is Fallout 5 officially in development?
Yes. In a statement published July 17, 2026, Bethesda Game Studios said Fallout 5 is in preproduction and described it as a “long-range destination.” The studio also said it is developing Fallout 5 and The Elder Scrolls VI on Creation Engine 3, a shared technology platform it has been building since Starfield launched. Bethesda’s statement is the clearest official update on the game’s status.

When will Fallout 5 release?
Bethesda has not announced a release date or release window. The studio says most of its team is focused on The Elder Scrolls VI, and calls Fallout 5 a long-range destination; neither statement establishes a launch year.

What platforms will Fallout 5 support?
No platform list has been announced. When asked in a July 2026 interview about possible Xbox exclusivity, Todd Howard reportedly said it was too early to comment. That leaves exclusivity unresolved: there is no confirmed basis to say Fallout 5 will be Xbox-only, come to PlayStation, or launch on any other named platform. Windows Central reported the interview response.

Which other Fallout projects are separate from Fallout 5?
Bethesda’s July 2026 update mentions several projects in addition to Fallout 5. Their status does not establish a Fallout 5 date or reveal its features.

- Fallout 76: Raven Rock: Bethesda planned this expansion for 2027 and described it as a prequel story to Fallout 3. It is an expansion for Fallout 76, not Fallout 5.
What can Fallout fans play while they wait?
Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition is an existing game, not a Fallout 5 preorder or a preview of its confirmed features. Bethesda’s roadmap says the edition launched digitally for Nintendo Switch 2 on February 24, 2026, or February 25 in Australia. It includes six official add-ons and more than 150 pieces of Creation Club content. Bethesda’s Switch 2 roadmap gives the launch and edition details; the official Fallout games page lists the franchise’s existing entries.
