Its stated purpose was to promote understanding of the field and advance software-maintenance professionals. Historical sources describe a monthly newsletter and annual conference, but do not establish whether the association still operates today.
What did SMA stand for?
In historical software-maintenance sources, SMA stands for Software Maintenance Association. A 1992 paper describes it as “organized as a special interest group in the field of software maintenance.” The paper places the organization in the professional community concerned with maintaining and improving software after its initial development.

What did the Software Maintenance Association do?
The group’s stated service purpose was promoting understanding of software maintenance and advancing software-maintenance professionals, as recorded in a historical trademark summary. That record documents the mark’s history, not the association’s present-day status.
Newsletter and annual conference
The 1992 paper reports that SMA had published a monthly newsletter, Software Maintenance News, since 1983. It also describes an annual meeting and conference held in a different North American city each year. A 1994 conference catalog later lists the SMA as a cooperating organization with the International Conference on Software Maintenance. The catalog record provides evidence of historical conference involvement, not current activity.

Historical survey
A later account reports that an SMA survey conducted in 1987 received responses from 81 organizations. In that account, 29% of the challenges reported were classified as “environmental factors.” This is a result from that historical survey as reported in the Van Haren publication, not a current measure of software-maintenance problems. Its current operating and legal status is not established by the available historical sources. The trademark summary records registration on August 13, 1991, and cancellation on February 17, 1998. A trademark’s cancellation is not, by itself, proof that the organization dissolved. No current official association source is identified here to confirm active leadership, membership, events, or operations.

The best-supported description is therefore historical: SMA was a professional special interest group that published a newsletter and organized an annual meeting and conference. Claims that it is active today—or that it formally closed—would require current authoritative evidence.
