The first commercial hard disk drive was IBM’s Model 350 disk storage unit, introduced in 1956 as part of the IBM 305 RAMAC system. The Model 350 was the drive; RAMAC was the computer system it served. Its defining advance was random access to data stored on magnetic disks.

What was the first hard disk?

IBM’s Model 350 disk storage unit is recognized as the first commercial hard disk drive. IBM describes the IBM 305 RAMAC as the first computer to use a random-access disk drive: IBM’s history of RAMAC.

The names refer to different things. The Model 350 was the storage drive; the IBM 305 RAMAC was the computer system that used it. RAMAC stands for “Random Access Method for Accounting and Control.”

When did the Model 350 arrive?

The milestone is dated to 1956, but sources mark two distinct events. The Computer History Museum says the first commercial Model 350 shipped to Zellerbach Paper in San Francisco in June 1956 as part of the IBM 305 RAMAC: Computer History Museum’s account of the first commercial hard-disk shipment. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers dates commercial availability to September 4, 1956: ASME’s history of the IBM 350 RAMAC Disk File. A shipment date and an availability date describe different milestones, not a contradiction.

How much data could it store?

The Computer History Museum gives the Model 350’s capacity as five million characters—approximately 3.75 MB—stored on 50 large disks. The character count is the reported capacity; the MB figure is an approximate conversion, not five megabytes. See the museum’s history of the first disk drive, RAMAC 350.

Why was a disk drive significant?

Before random-access disk storage, computer data workflows relied on media such as punched cards and tape. The Model 350 made it possible to access stored data at a selected location on disk rather than treating storage only as a sequence to work through. That capability brought random-access magnetic disk storage into commercial computing; no particular speed comparison is needed to understand the change.
