What Was the First Binary Computer? It Depends on the Definition

The Z1, ABC and Z3 can each fit a different “first computer” claim. The key differences are binary operation, programmability and electronic construction.

The Z3 is a strong answer if “first binary computer” means a working, programmable machine that used binary arithmetic. The ABC is the answer to a different question: Iowa State University calls it the first electronic digital computer. The earlier Z1 also qualifies under some definitions because it was a programmable binary machine, but it was mechanical.

What does “first binary computer” mean?

There is no single winner unless “computer” and “first” are defined. The machines most often raised for this question differ in three important ways: whether they used binary, whether they could be programmed, and whether they were electronic or electromechanical.

  • Binary: representing information with two states, commonly written as 0 and 1.
  • Programmable: able to follow an encoded sequence of operations, rather than being limited to a fixed task.
  • Electronic: built using electronic components. A relay machine is electromechanical, not fully electronic.

These distinctions explain why “first electronic digital computer” and “first programmable binary computer” can refer to different machines without contradicting one another.

How the leading candidates compare

Machine Construction and capability Relevant priority claim Important qualification
Z1 Mechanical, binary, and program-controlled An early programmable binary machine Not electronic
Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) Electronic machine built to solve equations Iowa State University calls it the first electronic digital computer It was not programmable
Z3 Relay-based machine using floating-point binary arithmetic, with a 22-bit word length The Deutsches Museum calls it the first programmable binary computer Electromechanical, not fully electronic

The descriptions in the table reflect the claims made by the linked institutions; they are not one universally agreed ranking.

The Z1: an early mechanical programmable binary machine

The Z1 shows why some answers reach earlier than the Z3. The Deutsches Technikmuseum describes it as freely programmable and binary, using mechanical elements. The German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA) describes it as a fully mechanical programmable numerical calculator built in 1938. Under a definition that includes mechanical programmable binary machines, it belongs among the earliest candidates. Under a definition requiring electronic construction, it does not qualify.

The ABC: the first electronic digital computer in Iowa State’s account

John Vincent Atanasoff began developing concepts for an electronic computing machine at Iowa State in 1937 and worked with graduate student Clifford Berry on the ABC. Iowa State University Library calls the ABC the world’s first electronic digital computer. Its purpose is a key qualification: the Computer History Museum describes it as an equation-solving machine and says it was not programmable. It fits the electronic-digital criterion, not the programmable-computer criterion.

The Z3: a working programmable binary computer

Konrad Zuse completed the Z3 in 1941. The Computer History Museum says it used 2,300 relays, performed floating-point binary arithmetic, and had a 22-bit word length. The Deutsches Museum calls it the world’s first programmable binary computer, while the DPMA describes it as the first functional freely programmable computer based on the binary number system and circuitry.

Those descriptions make the Z3 a strong answer when the intended criterion is a working, programmable binary computer. Its relays, however, make it electromechanical rather than fully electronic, so it is not the answer to every version of the “first computer” question.

Which answer should you use?

  • Say Z1 when your definition includes early mechanical, programmable binary machines.
  • Say ABC when you mean the first electronic digital computer according to Iowa State University’s account; note that it was not programmable.
  • Say Z3 when you mean a working programmable binary computer; note that it was relay-based and electromechanical.

Whenever a source calls something the “first computer,” check which capability it is prioritizing: binary operation, programmability, electronic construction, or a working machine.
