It started in 2021 as Spotify Greenroom, was renamed Spotify Live in 2022, and let hosts run live conversations while listeners heard the discussion, chatted by text, or were invited to speak. Spotify shut down the standalone Spotify Live app in 2023, so it is not a current standalone service.
What Spotify Live was
Spotify Live was designed for real-time, spoken-audio conversations rather than on-demand music or podcasts. People could create a live room, join someone else’s room, and interact while the event was happening. Spotify positioned it especially as a way for artists and creators to talk with fans in real time.

The service first launched as Spotify Greenroom for iOS and Android in 2021. At launch, Spotify said Greenroom was available in more than 135 markets. That was a launch-era figure from June 2021, not a statement about current availability.
How a live room worked
Hosts created and managed the conversation
A host could set the room’s topic and tone, start the discussion, and control who participated. Host and moderator tools included choosing speakers and managing the room’s chat. Spotify also described the ability to record conversations, allowing audio from a room to be retained after the live event.

Listeners could listen, chat, or speak
Most participants entered as listeners. They could follow the live discussion and use in-app text chat. A listener who wanted to talk had to be brought onstage by the host or moderator; joining a room did not automatically give every attendee a microphone.
That created two distinct forms of participation:
| Role | What the person could do |
|---|---|
| Listener | Hear the live conversation and use text chat. |
| Speaker | Talk in the room after the host brought the person onstage. |
| Host or moderator | Set the subject and tone, select speakers, manage participation and chat, and record the conversation. |
Recordings were processed after the room
Spotify Engineering described recording work that took place after a room ended. Recording was therefore part of the service’s room workflow, rather than a claim that every conversation was instantly available as an edited podcast.

Why Greenroom became Spotify Live
On April 12, 2022, Spotify announced that Greenroom was changing its name to Spotify Live. The company also began putting some live programming into the main Spotify app while keeping the standalone app for more interactive participation.
Under that arrangement, a listener could discover selected live programming through a creator’s podcast page or an artist page in Spotify. Spotify directed people who wanted to chat or join the host onstage to the Spotify Live app. The initial in-app programming was limited to selected Spotify original shows, while independent creators could continue going live in the companion app.

What happened to Spotify Live?
Spotify confirmed in April 2023 that it was sunsetting the standalone Spotify Live app. The company said it would continue exploring ways for fans and creators to interact live, specifically mentioning artist-focused listening parties as an area it would keep exploring. The shutdown establishes that the standalone app ended; it does not establish that every later live feature inside Spotify disappeared or remained available.

Is Spotify Live available now?
No—not as the standalone Spotify Live app. Spotify sunset that app in 2023. Historical descriptions of finding live shows on artist or podcast pages refer to the 2022 product configuration and should not be treated as confirmation that the same feature, catalog or participation flow exists today.

The most accurate way to understand Spotify Live is as a discontinued live-audio experiment: Greenroom supplied the original rooms, the 2022 rebrand connected some live listening with Spotify’s main app, and the separate Live app was later closed.
