What Was in “A Smattering of Selenium #96”?

Adam Goucher’s 2012 “A Smattering of Selenium #96” was a community link roundup—not a Selenium 96 release. Here’s what it linked to and how Chrome 96 fits a separate story.

“A Smattering of Selenium #96” was a community link roundup by Adam Goucher, published on June 27, 2012. The “96” is the roundup’s installment number—not a Selenium software release. The post collected links on test samples, developer tools, behavior-driven development (BDD), and browser automation services.

What the 2012 roundup covered

Goucher’s post pointed readers to a varied set of projects and discussions rather than announcing a single Selenium feature or release. Its links included:

  • Test examples and tools: a jbehave-selenium sample project, the Light Table Playground, Jasmine, and VsVim for Visual Studio.
  • Browser automation services: Joyride, described in the post as browser automation without programming as a service.
  • Python testing and BDD: pytest-mozwebqa 1.0, Py.Saunter, pyccuracy, and SpecLoud.
  • Test naming: a Sauce Labs discussion about meaningful test names and guidance on naming Cucumber features and scenario outlines.

These are the post’s historical references. The roundup does not establish whether each project or service remains available, maintained, or unchanged. Check the relevant project’s current documentation before relying on one.

Is Selenium 96 the same as Chrome 96?

No. The 2012 “#96” identifies the roundup’s issue number. Chrome 96 appears in a separate Selenium context from 2021: the Selenium Technical Leadership Committee’s November 10 meeting listed Chrome 96 CDP bindings as work remaining for Selenium 4.1.0, and the JavaScript binding changelog for 4.1.0 records support for CDP v96.

Those are historical project records, not current compatibility guidance. See the November 10, 2021 TLC meeting notes and the Selenium WebDriver JavaScript changelog for the dated details.

When ScreenshotNeo may be relevant

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for Selenium’s browser automation framework. If your task is to capture page screenshots rather than automate an end-to-end test, it is an alternative to consider: it can remove known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and failed loads and other specified non-page results are not billed. See ScreenshotNeo for product details.

Or skip the browser setup

For a one-request screenshot, use cURL (replace the sample URL with the page you want to capture):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.
