Amazon’s “Despair Closet” was a mocking nickname for AmaZen, an enclosed kiosk the company introduced in 2021 at some operations buildings. It offered short, self-guided meditation and calming content during shifts. Amazon presented it as a way for employees to pause and regroup; critics argued that a booth could not substitute for safer, fairer working conditions. The available launch materials and reporting do not establish how many kiosks were installed, whether they remain in use, or whether AmaZen improved employees’ mental health.
What was Amazon’s AmaZen booth?
Amazon announced AmaZen in May 2021 as part of WorkingWell, its company-wide health and safety program. The enclosed, interactive station was intended to give employees a quiet place to take a brief break. Amazon said its content included “guided meditations, positive affirmations, calming scenes with sounds, and more.”

Amazon identified employee Leila Brown, who had a sports-medicine background, as AmaZen’s creator. Brown described the goal as creating “a space that’s quiet, that people could go and focus on their mental and emotional wellbeing.” Employee Katie Miller said that taking time to pause and regroup helped her return to work more focused. Those statements describe the company’s intent and individual experiences, not an independent assessment of outcomes.

The nickname came from critics reacting to images and descriptions of a small mindfulness enclosure. In contemporaneous coverage, some social-media users argued that a wellness booth seemed inadequate alongside concerns about warehouse pace, breaks, bathroom access and injuries. Writer Talia Lavin, in a tweet reproduced by The Guardian, contrasted the kiosk with “livable wages and working conditions.”

The disagreement was about more than the booth’s size. A brief, self-guided pause might offer some people a moment of calm, but it does not itself change workloads, staffing, injury risks, pay or access to bathrooms. AmaZen should therefore be understood as a limited wellness amenity, not as evidence that Amazon had resolved those broader workplace concerns.
How did AmaZen fit into WorkingWell?
Amazon announced WorkingWell on 17 May 2021. The company said the program formed part of more than $300 million in safety projects planned for 2021 and set a goal of reducing recordable incident rates by 50% by 2025. These were announced investment and target figures, not proof that the target was achieved.
Amazon said WorkingWell had been piloted in the United States in 2019 and had expanded to 859,000 employees at 350 sites in North America and Europe by the 2021 announcement. Its sustainability report later that year said the broader program reached approximately 1.2 million employees. The report also stated that participating users of WorkingWell huddles had 15% or greater fewer musculoskeletal-disorder incidents than nonparticipants. That figure concerns the huddle intervention and musculoskeletal injuries; it is not an AmaZen result or a measure of mental-health outcomes.
Amazon also announced Resources for Living, a separate confidential mental-health and daily-life support benefit for U.S. employees and their households, funded for up to 24 million counseling sessions per year. Unlike AmaZen’s self-guided kiosk content, this was a professional-support benefit. The announcement’s session capacity does not establish how many sessions employees used.

Did AmaZen help workers, and is it still in use?
The available launch materials and contemporaneous reporting do not establish an independent causal evaluation of AmaZen’s mental-health effects. They also do not state how many kiosks were installed or establish whether the booths remained widely deployed after 2021. Amazon’s broader WorkingWell figures cannot fill those gaps because they concern program reach and a separate huddle intervention.
HR Dive reported expert concerns about the strength of the evidence, worker privacy and whether employees had enough time or felt comfortable using the kiosks during demanding shifts. These questions matter for any workplace wellness tool: whether use is genuinely voluntary, whether workers can access it during paid shift time, what privacy protections apply, and whether the offering complements rather than distracts from changes to workload and safety.
On the evidence available, AmaZen was a real Amazon-announced kiosk offering mindfulness content in some operations buildings, but claims that it improved mental health or remains in widespread use are not established.
