It is not a promise that every file, snapshot, memory state, backup, export, or copy associated with that VM is encrypted. The VM also depends on continuous key access: if the required key cannot be retrieved, vSphere can lock the VM and prevent it from powering on.
What vSphere VM encryption is designed to protect
vSphere VM encryption is an infrastructure control for encrypting VM objects at rest. The encryption operation is tied to a key provider rather than being self-contained inside the VM. In practical terms, the protected scope is the VM’s configuration data and virtual-disk data managed by vSphere.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The control is different from encrypting files inside the guest operating system. A guest administrator still works with the operating system and applications normally, and authorized software running in the guest can read data after the VM has been powered on. VM encryption is therefore most useful for reducing exposure when VM storage is copied, removed from its expected host, or accessed without the authorized key path.
Broadcom’s support documentation establishes the key-provider dependency and the encrypted-VM operations described below, but it is not a complete cryptographic design specification for every vSphere release. Treat the following boundaries as deliberate: where a release-specific security guide does not document an artifact, do not assume that artifact is covered.

Coverage that is established
| VM-related item | What can be stated reliably |
|---|---|
| VM configuration | Included in the encrypted VM object handled by vSphere. |
| Virtual-disk data | Included in the encrypted VM storage handled by vSphere. |
| Key-provider material | Not part of the VM’s encrypted disks; it must be operated, protected, and backed up as a separate dependency. |
| Guest memory while the VM runs | Universal coverage is not established by the cited support material. Do not market VM encryption as automatic protection for every memory state. |
| Snapshot files and snapshot memory | Snapshot creation and optional memory capture are documented, but the cited material does not establish one encryption rule for every snapshot artifact in every release. |
| Backups, exports, and copies outside vSphere-managed storage | Coverage is not established here. Verify the backup, export, or replication product’s own encryption behavior. |
| Data visible inside the guest | Not hidden from an authorized guest operating system or an attacker who controls that guest while it is running. |
This table is a scope guide, not a substitute for the security documentation for your exact vSphere version and the products that copy VM data.
Why the key provider is part of the security and availability model
Encryption keys are supplied through a configured key-provider service. Without that provider, vSphere cannot complete operations that require the VM’s key. A correct design therefore treats key management as both a confidentiality control and an availability dependency.
vSphere Native Key Provider
Broadcom documents Native Key Provider for vSphere 7.0 Update 2 and later. It is not configured automatically. An administrator must configure it and back it up before using it for encryption tasks. Native Key Provider can be used without deploying a separate external key server, which may simplify a small or self-contained vSphere environment, but the provider’s backup and recovery process remains essential. See Broadcom’s Native Key Provider configuration guidance for the supported setup and backup requirements.

External key-management service
vSphere can also use an external key-management service. The organization then retains responsibility for that service’s availability, authentication, key retention, backup, and disaster-recovery arrangements. An external service may fit existing enterprise key-management controls, but it introduces network and service dependencies that every participating host must satisfy.
| Decision factor | Native Key Provider | External key-management service |
|---|---|---|
| Who operates the provider | The vSphere administrators operate the native provider within the vSphere environment. | The organization operates or contracts for a separate key-management service. |
| Backup responsibility | Back up the Native Key Provider before encryption work, as instructed by Broadcom. | Follow the external service’s backup, escrow, and restoration procedures. |
| Host access | Hosts must be able to retrieve keys from the configured native provider. | Hosts and the key-management service must maintain the required connectivity and trust. |

Prerequisites before encrypting a VM
Encryption should be introduced as a controlled change, not as a checkbox selected during an outage. Use this sequence, adapting labels to the vSphere release in use:
- Confirm release support. Native Key Provider requires vSphere 7.0 Update 2 or later. If the environment is older, determine whether an external key-management service supported by that release is required.
- Choose the provider model. Decide who will operate the provider, who can restore it, and how hosts will reach it during normal operation and disaster recovery.
- Configure the provider. A provider must be valid and available before encryption controls can be used. Native Key Provider is not enabled by default.
- Back up the provider. Broadcom specifically instructs administrators to back up Native Key Provider before using it for encryption tasks. Store that recovery material under the organization’s established access and retention controls.
- Check host access. Verify that every host expected to run or migrate the VM can obtain the required key. A provider that works from one management path but is unreachable from a participating host is not operationally sufficient.
- Review permissions. Grant only the administrators and automation accounts that need cryptographic operations and storage-policy changes.
- Clear snapshots before changing encryption state. vSphere 7.x and 8.x can fail an encryption-state change when snapshots exist. Remove all snapshots first, after confirming that doing so is acceptable for the application and retention policy.
- Apply the encryption setting. Enable encryption using the configured provider and the storage-policy controls appropriate to the VM. Record which provider and recovery procedure apply to the VM.
- Exercise an operational check. In a maintenance window, confirm that the VM can power on and that an authorized host can perform the intended migration workflow. This validates your own process; it is not a guarantee against future provider outages.
Permissions that control who can enable encryption
In the vCenter Server 8.0 context, Broadcom says the encryption controls require a valid configured provider plus privileges in several areas. Relevant permissions include:

If the encryption toggle is missing, check the provider status and the effective privileges on the object. Broadcom’s troubleshooting article, The encryption toggle switch is missing, describes these prerequisites for vCenter Server 8.0. Do not solve a missing control by granting broad administrator rights without first identifying which prerequisite is absent.
Snapshots: what the documented restriction actually means
The documented snapshot rule concerns changing a VM’s encryption state. Broadcom states that an encryption-state change fails when snapshots are present and advises removing all snapshots before making that change; the guidance applies to vSphere 7.x and 8.x. This does not mean every snapshot operation is universally forbidden, nor does it prove that every snapshot-related artifact has identical encryption treatment.
Snapshots can optionally include the VM’s memory. Broadcom’s snapshot overview explains that option and the files involved, but the cited material does not establish a release-independent rule for the encryption of every memory artifact. If memory capture, snapshot export, or long-term snapshot retention matters to your threat model, consult the full security and snapshot documentation for the exact release and validate the behavior with the backup or management product that handles those files.

Encrypted migration and vMotion dependencies
Encryption does not remove the need for key access during migration. Broadcom documents vMotion failures with the error “An encryption key is required” when a participating host or the key system cannot provide a key required by the VM. The causes can include key-provider connectivity, host configuration, or the key being unavailable.
Before scheduling encrypted migration, confirm that:

Use Broadcom’s vMotion troubleshooting article when the operation reports that an encryption key is required. Repeated retries will not fix a missing key or a broken provider path.

What happens when the key is unavailable
Key loss is an availability incident, not merely a logging issue. Broadcom documents a virtual-machine locked alarm and explains that the VM may be unable to power on when the required key is missing or the host cannot retrieve it from the key provider. The encrypted disks can still be present while the VM remains unusable because vSphere cannot complete the key operation.
Recovery priorities
- Stop destructive changes. Do not delete the VM, its encrypted disks, provider records, or recovery files while the cause is unknown.
- Identify the missing dependency. Determine whether the provider is down, the host is isolated, credentials or certificates have changed, or the key itself is unavailable.
- Restore provider continuity. Bring the provider service and its network path back, or follow the documented restoration process for the provider backup.
- Verify host retrieval. Confirm that the specific host on which the VM must run can obtain the required key.
- Retry the power-on or migration. Perform the operation only after key retrieval is confirmed and the incident is documented.
- Improve the runbook. Record ownership, escalation contacts, backup locations, restoration authority, and the test schedule for provider recovery.
Broadcom’s Virtual Machine Locked Alarm guidance covers the locked-VM condition. Keeping a secure, recoverable copy of key-provider material and preserving the provider’s operational continuity are essential safeguards; recovery testing should be part of your own continuity program.
Data paths that require separate verification
Many organizations use “VM encryption” as shorthand for a much larger data lifecycle. That shorthand can create gaps. Check each path independently:

- vTPM and other auxiliary state: consult the release-specific security guide for the encryption treatment of auxiliary VM files.
- Operational logs and credentials: ensure that key identifiers, provider credentials, and troubleshooting bundles do not expose secrets through ordinary log retention.
The cited support pages do not provide a universal, release-by-release inventory for these paths. Obtain the applicable vSphere Security documentation and the documentation for every product that copies or transforms VM data before claiming end-to-end coverage.
A practical decision checklist
Use these questions during design review and before an audit:
- Which vSphere version and edition are running, and does the selected provider support them?
- Who can configure, use, back up, and restore the provider?
- Where is the protected provider backup stored, and who can authorize its restoration?
- Can every host that may run the VM retrieve its key?
- Are cryptographic and storage-policy privileges limited to the required roles?
- Does the change procedure remove snapshots before changing encryption state?
- What is the documented response to a locked VM or an “An encryption key is required” migration failure?
- Which backup, export, replication, and snapshot products create additional copies, and what encryption do they apply?
- Has the organization tested provider recovery without exposing production data?
The accurate bottom line about vSphere VM encryption
Use vSphere VM encryption to protect the VM configuration and virtual-disk data that vSphere encrypts with keys from a configured provider. Do not present it as blanket encryption for every representation of the VM. The security boundary ends where guest access, external copies, undocumented artifacts, or a separate data-protection product begins. The operational boundary is equally important: preserve the provider and its keys, because losing key access can lock the VM and stop both power-on and migration.
