What Van Eck Phreaking Means—and How Display Eavesdropping Works

Van Eck phreaking is electromagnetic eavesdropping that seeks to reconstruct information from unintended emissions, especially those associated with displays. It is related to, but narrower than, TEMPEST.

Van Eck phreaking is a form of eavesdropping that tries to recover information by detecting unintended electromagnetic emissions from electronic equipment. In the best-known case, emissions associated with a display signal can reveal content shown on a screen. It is a side channel: the information need not be sent over a network to leak.

What does “Van Eck phreaking” mean?

The term commonly refers to electromagnetic eavesdropping focused on displays. Electronic devices can emit radio-frequency energy unintentionally, and some emissions may carry patterns correlated with the information being processed. By receiving and processing those signals, an observer may be able to reconstruct displayed content.

The name comes from Wim van Eck’s 1985 public analysis of information leakage from cathode-ray-tube (CRT) displays. Later technical work examined both CRT and liquid-crystal displays, but that history does not mean every modern screen can be reconstructed in any setting.

How can a display leak information?

Signals that drive a display can produce electromagnetic fields. If those emissions preserve enough detail about the video signal, specialized equipment and analysis may turn them into a representation of what was on screen. Weak signals, background noise, receiver capability, equipment design, and the surrounding environment all affect what can be recovered.

A 2008 NTT Technical Review paper describes experiments in an anechoic chamber with the receiver 3 m from the tested PC. In one example, the authors averaged 32 video frames to reduce random noise. Those are conditions from that study, not a standard eavesdropping distance or a universal processing requirement. The authors also note that the work requires specialized knowledge.

Is Van Eck phreaking the same as TEMPEST?

No. Van Eck phreaking is usually used for display-focused electromagnetic eavesdropping. TEMPEST is a broader term for investigating, studying, and controlling compromising emanations from telecommunications and automated information systems equipment. NIST’s CSRC glossary gives that definition citing CNSSI 4009-2022: NIST CSRC glossary: TEMPEST. The glossary treats TEMPEST as a name; it does not establish it as an acronym.

ERICKHILL 3 in 1 EMF Detector, Rechargeable EF, RF, MF, WiFi,5G Detector
  • All-in-One Detection: RT-100S 3-in-1 EMF Reader measures Electric (EF), Magnetic (MF), and Radio Frequency (RF) fields to monitor radiation in your home, office, or outdoors.EF (Electric Field): Detects radiation from appliances like microwaves, refrigerators, and power lines.MF (Magnetic Field): Measures magnetic radiation from devices like motors, microwaves, and refrigerators.RF (Radio Frequency): Monitors radiation from Wi-Fi routers, cell phones, and 5G signals. It’s also great for paranormal investigations, detecting EMF changes linked to ghostly activity.
  • Easy to Use: ERICKHILL Radiation Detector ready to measure instantly upon powering on—no complicated setup required. All three field strengths display directly on the screen, letting you see electric, magnetic, and RF readings at a glance. Ideal for users of all experience levels.
  • Clear Color-Coded Screen: The large display features a three-color backlight indicator (green, orange, and red) that changes based on radiation levels, giving you instant visual feedback on EMF exposure to easily assess low, moderate, and high radiation zones.
  • Triple Alarm Modes: Equipped with sound, screen, and light alerts that help you identify areas with higher radiation levels, this EMF meter ensures you’re always aware of your environment. You can easily turn off the sound alerts if preferred, while the visual and light indicators will still highlight areas with higher radiation, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor use.
  • Convenient and Energy-Saving Design: Our emf detector equipped with unit switching for customized readings, a Type-C charging port for fast, easy charging, and an automatic shutoff feature to save battery, this EMF detector is portable, energy-efficient, and made for frequent use.

Nor does every electromagnetic side-channel attack fall under the narrow display-focused meaning of Van Eck phreaking. For example, a 2011 Cambridge report distinguishes passive reception of emissions from active electromagnetic techniques that inject signals into equipment to make it misbehave or reveal secrets.

What can reduce the risk?

Countermeasures address different leakage paths, and none of the reviewed sources establishes a universal consumer fix. The right choice depends on the equipment, its interfaces, how emissions escape, and the threat being considered.

Approach What it addresses Limitations described in the sources
Shielding Radiated emissions from equipment or a space, using metallic materials. NTT describes it as reliable for reducing leakage, but complete shielding—especially of rooms or buildings—can be difficult and expensive.
Special fonts or display drivers Making reconstructed text less readable through “soft tempest” techniques or specialized display systems. NTT notes that a font approach may not make text sufficiently indistinct and does not protect figures or drawings. Kuhn also discusses specialized screen drivers and video cards for protecting displayed text.
Filtering Emissions carried along power or interface cables. Filters need to cover all external interfaces and be tuned to the relevant emission frequencies. They help only when interface lines are the main radiation source.
Jamming Interfering with leakage by placing a patterned signal on a display interface. NTT describes a prototype intended to leave the visible image intact; it is a research result, not a current product recommendation.

These approaches are discussed in the 2008 NTT review, “Countermeasures to Prevent Eavesdropping on Unintentional Emanations from Personal Computers”. Display eavesdropping and its technical limits are also examined in Markus G. Kuhn’s 2003 Cambridge report, “Compromising emanations: eavesdropping risks of computer displays”. The distinction between passive reception and active electromagnetic attacks appears in A. Theodore Marketos’s 2011 Cambridge report, “Active electromagnetic attacks on secure hardware”.
