U.S. citizens planning to live in Mexico for more than 180 days should compare temporary and permanent residence before moving. Temporary residence is time-limited; permanent residence is indefinite. For either category, the process generally begins at a Mexican consulate outside Mexico and, if the visa is approved, continues with a residence-card application through Mexico’s National Institute of Migration (INM) after arrival.
Temporary or permanent residence: what is the difference?
The two categories differ mainly in duration and eligibility routes. Mexico’s SRE describes temporary residence as a stay longer than 180 days and less than four years. The MiConsulado portal describes temporary residence as lasting up to four years and permanent residence as indefinite. The exact period authorized for an individual case depends on the process and approval.

The SRE temporary-residence page is dated July 23, 2015; MiConsulado’s category descriptions were accessed October 4, 2026. Check the current guidance of the consulate where you will apply rather than treating a general description as a guarantee of an individual outcome.

Temporary residence
Officially listed grounds include financial solvency, family unit, an invitation, Mexican real property and investment, among other specified routes. Each route calls for evidence related to that basis. For example, a family application involves proof of the qualifying relationship, while a solvency application involves financial records. The consulate’s current instructions determine which documents it accepts and how they must be presented.

Permanent residence
SRE permanent-residence guidance identifies retirement or pension and specified family ties as routes. The rules are not simply “retired people qualify” or “having any relative in Mexico qualifies”: applicants must meet the applicable category’s conditions and provide the required evidence. Some family-unit applications require prior authorization from INM. Confirm the precise route and documents with the consulate before making plans based on eligibility.
How the application works
The consular visa and the Mexican residence card are separate stages. The federal procedure says the visa request is made in person at a Mexican consular office abroad. MiConsulado describes a digital appointment followed by attendance at the consulate for document review, biometrics, an interview and payment.

- Select the residence category and qualifying route. Use the current SRE and consular guidance to identify the route that fits your circumstances.
- Check the specific consulate’s checklist and make an appointment. Consular procedures and appointment instructions can vary by location and change over time.
- Attend the appointment with the required evidence. Expect to provide a valid passport and route-specific documents. Depending on your case, those may include financial, family, invitation, property, investment or pension evidence. Follow the consulate’s instructions for document form, translation, legalization or apostille.
- Complete the consular review. The portal describes document review, biometrics, an interview and payment. If the visa is approved, follow the consulate’s instructions for travel and entry.
- Apply for the residence card after entering Mexico. SRE guidance says to process the card with INM within 30 calendar days of arrival. The federal procedure describes temporary residence cards as valid for one to four years, according to the period authorized.
Do not assume that approval of a consular visa is itself the final residence card. Plan the post-arrival INM step within the stated 30-calendar-day period.

Financial solvency is one temporary-residence route, but the official materials do not establish one universal 2026 threshold for every applicant and Mexican consulate. Required amounts and acceptable proof can vary by office and may change, so use the checklist for the place where you will apply.

For scale only, the Mexican consular office in Washington’s 2025 Temporary Resident checklist gave this office- and date-specific example:
| Evidence described in the Washington 2025 checklist | Amount and period in that checklist |
|---|---|
| Monthly bank or investment-account balance | At least MXN 1,394,000 during the prior 12 months. |
| Monthly after-tax employment or pension income | At least MXN 83,640 during the prior six months. |
Those figures are examples from that 2025 Washington checklist, not nationwide 2026 thresholds. Do not use them as a substitute for the current requirements of another consulate or a later checklist.

What fees should you expect?
Visa and card charges depend on the applicable procedure and current instructions. SRE’s permanent-residence procedure search result lists a visa fee of US$53 effective January 1, 2024; that dated amount should not be treated as the current 2026 fee. The federal temporary-resident procedure says its 2026 dollar-fee calculation is based on an official communication dated December 19, 2025, but does not establish one universal total for every visa and residence-card scenario. Confirm the current fee, payment method and any separate card charges with the consular office and INM instructions relevant to your case.

Can you work in Mexico on temporary residence?
SRE says temporary residence can permit work when the salary is paid abroad. If you take a Mexican job and receive salary in Mexico, the employer must seek the relevant authorization through INM. That distinction does not settle every occupation, tax, employment or permit question; check the rules that apply to your specific work arrangement.
