MCP standardizes how a server advertises and provides tools; each server chooses which tools it offers. The official reference memory server documents nine tools for managing and querying a knowledge graph. Treat those as that implementation’s tools, not as a requirement for every MCP server.
What does MCP require of a memory server?
MCP defines a way for clients to discover and invoke server tools, but it does not prescribe a universal memory tool set. Under the current specification, a server that declares the tools capability must respond to tools/list with the tools currently available to the requesting client. Read the MCP tools specification.
The advertised list may be empty, change over time, or depend on the authorization provided with a request. A client should inspect the connected server’s list rather than assume it implements any particular memory interface.
Which nine tools does the official reference memory server document?
The reference implementation stores memory as a knowledge graph of named entities, types, observations, and relations. Its README describes these nine tools: reference memory server documentation.

| Tool | Purpose in the reference server |
|---|---|
create_entities |
Creates multiple graph entities, each with a name, type, and observations. Entities whose names already exist are ignored. |
create_relations |
Creates relations between existing entities. A relation has a source, target, and active-voice relation type; duplicates are skipped, and creation fails if either endpoint is missing. |
add_observations |
Adds observations to existing entities. The README describes observations as strings and recommends keeping them atomic—one fact per observation. |
delete_entities |
Removes entities and their associated relations. |
delete_observations |
Removes specified observations from entities. |
delete_relations |
Removes specified relations from the graph. |
read_graph |
Returns the full graph structure, including entities and relations. |
search_nodes |
Searches entity names, types, and observation content, returning matching entities and relations. |
open_nodes |
Retrieves named entities and relations between requested entities. Names that do not exist are silently skipped. |
The official Go SDK memory example also registers the same nine tools, corroborating the list as a project example rather than a protocol mandate: Go SDK server example.
How should a client use the list?
Use tool discovery against the server you actually connected to, then follow the names and schemas it advertises. The reference list is a useful orientation when working with that implementation, but another memory server may use different tools, data models, or permissions. Tool names alone are not enough to infer argument formats or behavior; consult that server’s current documentation and advertised schemas.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the knowledge-graph resource another tool?
No. The reference server also exposes a readable memory://knowledge-graph resource containing the graph as JSON. Its README says successful graph mutations notify subscribers that the resource has been updated. The resource and notifications are complementary MCP capabilities, not additional entries in the nine-tool list. See the reference server documentation.
