Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Build your travel charging kit around the devices and destinations on your itinerary: list each device’s connector and charging requirements, then match the chargers and cables to them. Add a power bank if you expect to be away from outlets. For flights, keep power banks in carry-on baggage and check both the current airline rules and the limits that apply to your route.
Start with the devices you will bring
Before packing accessories, make a list of the phones, tablets, laptops, cameras, headphones, and other electronics you plan to use. For each one, note its charging connector and the charging methods it supports. Then check the charger’s ports and output and the cable’s compatibility against the device requirements. USB Type-C is a connector, not a guarantee that every charger and cable will deliver the same charging capability; USB Power Delivery uses adjustable power, and compatible Type-C cables matter. The USB Implementers Forum describes these requirements in its USB Power Delivery material. It does not establish one universal charger wattage or cable for all devices.

Pack the cables needed for the devices on your itinerary. A spare cable is a practical backup, not a necessity for every trip: bring one if losing or damaging the only cable would leave an important device unusable.

Choose a charger setup that fits the kit
Compare the chargers you already own with your device list. A multi-port charger may reduce the number of wall plugs you carry, but only if its ports and output meet the requirements of the devices you will charge. Do not assume that sharing a connector means a charger is suitable for every device, or that one charger can charge several devices at their preferred rate. The right choice depends on the specific devices, charger specifications, and compatible cables.

Add a power bank when the itinerary calls for one
A power bank can help when you expect long stretches away from outlets, such as a travel day with transfers or a day out. Decide based on the devices you need to keep charged and when you expect access to power; there is no one-trip-length rule that determines whether everyone should bring one. Choose a unit with a legible watt-hour (Wh) rating, since that figure is relevant to airline limits.
Pack power banks for air travel by the current rules
The FAA says spare lithium batteries, including power banks and portable chargers, must travel in carry-on baggage, not checked baggage. Its passenger guidance allows rechargeable batteries rated 0–100 Wh; batteries rated 101–160 Wh require airline approval; and batteries above 160 Wh are forbidden. Airlines may set stricter limits on both quantity and watt-hours, so check the operating carrier’s current requirements before departure. See the FAA PackSafe lithium-battery guidance.

ICAO’s addendum, approved and effective 27 March 2026, limits passengers to no more than two power banks and prohibits recharging a power bank onboard. ICAO also recommends against using a power bank to charge another portable electronic device during a flight. The organization’s announcement says: “Following the improvements agreed today, these devices will now be limited to two per passenger, and passengers will be prohibited from recharging them during flights.” The two-bank limit applies regardless of the number or energy rating of other spare batteries. Carrier requirements can be stricter, so confirm the rules for each airline operating your flights.
- Put power banks in cabin baggage, not checked baggage.
- Keep the watt-hour rating legible and protect the battery from damage and short circuit as the relevant guidance directs.
- Carry no more than two power banks under ICAO’s effective 27 March 2026 limit.
- Do not recharge power banks onboard; ICAO recommends against using one to charge a device during flight.
Select an international plug adapter only after checking the destination
Plug adapters depend on the outlet format at your destination. Check that format and inspect the input rating printed on each charger before choosing an adapter. Without the destination and your charger details, it is not possible to identify a suitable adapter or establish whether your equipment is compatible with local electrical conditions. Do not assume a plug adapter changes voltage, and do not count on one adapter working everywhere.
