The word “pesto” alone does not tell you which oil, nuts, cheese or other ingredients a product contains.
Start with the style and ingredients you want
A traditional Genovese recipe is a useful reference if you want a classic basil pesto, not a rule that every commercial product must follow. The Consorzio del Pesto Genovese lists Genovese basil, extra virgin olive oil, Parmigiano Reggiano (or a Grana Padano variant), Pecorino Sardo, pine nuts, garlic and salt. Its recipe page also advises shoppers to read product labels because products sold as “Pesto Genovese” may contain other ingredients. This is the Consortium’s culinary standard; it does not establish that every variation violates a legal standard of identity. Read the Consortium’s traditional recipe.

Commercial recipes vary. Compare the herbs and supporting ingredients against the flavor, dietary needs and budget that matter to you. A different oil, nut or cheese is not automatically a sign of poor quality, and a label alone cannot establish which jar tastes best.

Use ingredient order to understand the formula
In the U.S., ingredients generally appear in descending order by weight, subject to exemptions. The first items therefore make up more of the product than ingredients listed later. Some ingredients may be grouped under terms such as “flavors” or “spices,” rather than individually named. The FDA also says ingredients meet the same safety standard whether derived naturally or artificially; “natural” by itself does not prove a product is safer or better. Two market-specific product pages illustrate why the list matters:
- Barilla Pesto alla Genovese, UK: the listed ingredients begin with sunflower oil, followed by basil (30%), cashews and Parmigiano Reggiano PDO cheese (5%); extra virgin olive oil appears later. The page lists a 190 g pack. See Barilla’s UK product page.
- Classico Traditional Basil Pesto Sauce & Spread, U.S.: the list begins with basil and soybean oil, followed by garlic, Parmesan, olive oil and salt. The page lists 13.5 oz and 8.1 oz package sizes. See Classico’s U.S. product page.
These are examples, not a survey or ranking. Use them to see how formulas can differ; check the label on the product and market you are actually buying.

Compare nutrition using the serving size
Check the serving size first, then compare calories, sodium, saturated fat and sugars for the amount you expect to use. A quarter-cup serving and a tablespoon serving cannot be compared by their printed numbers alone. Nutrition.gov’s food-label guidance points shoppers to label information for making informed choices.

As one product-specific example, Kraft Heinz lists Classico at 230 calories, 590 mg sodium, 4 g saturated fat and 0 g added sugar per 1/4 cup (62 g). Those are figures for that product page, not typical or average values for jarred pesto. Consider them against your own dietary needs and likely portion; one nutrient or oil source does not make pesto categorically healthy or unhealthy.

Check allergens and dietary claims on the exact jar
Read both the ingredient statement and any allergen or precautionary statement. Formulas and declarations can differ by brand, country and product version. For example, the cited Classico U.S. page says “CONTAINS: MILK” and lists soybean oil and sulfites. The cited Barilla UK page lists cashews and milk ingredients, says the product may contain traces of other nuts, and makes a gluten-free claim for that product. Neither example establishes the ingredients or claims of another jar.
If you need vegan, dairy-free, nut-free, gluten-free or another specific dietary fit, verify the claim on the package in your hand. If an important question is not answered there, contact the manufacturer rather than assuming ordinary pesto meets the requirement.

Follow the jar’s opened-storage directions
Use the instructions on the specific package you buy. The cited Barilla UK and Classico U.S. product pages both say to refrigerate after opening and use within five days; those directions apply to those examples, and package instructions may vary.
