Start with the school’s requirements, not a tablet shortlist. Confirm that the operating system, apps, browser and testing tools the student needs will work; then judge whether a tablet suits their workload and add the cost of any keyboard, stylus and protection. Tablets can be a good fit for reading, research, notes, video calls and light writing. Long essays, coding, specialist desktop software or heavy multitasking may call for a laptop or Windows 2-in-1 instead.
Check school compatibility before comparing devices
A tablet can have plenty of storage and a sharp screen yet still be the wrong choice if it cannot run a required app or complete an exam workflow. Ask the school which operating systems, apps, browsers, browser extensions, testing platforms and bring-your-own-device (BYOD) configurations it supports. Check whether there are device rules specific to the student’s year level or courses.

This matters especially for assessments and specialist classes: a website that opens in a browser is not necessarily the same as a supported testing setup. If the student relies on a particular platform, verify that it works on the exact device and operating-system version before buying.

The New Zealand Ministry of Education says its school-device guidance reflects cost, durability and compatibility with school systems. Oide Technology in Education’s August 2025 guide generally does not recommend Android tablets in its own school context, describing Google’s education support as Chromebook-focused. Neither position is a universal rule: follow the school’s requirements where the student attends.

Match the device to the student’s actual work
Reading, research and handwritten notes
A tablet is well suited to reading digital textbooks, browsing for research, annotating PDFs, taking handwritten notes, joining video calls and doing shorter writing tasks. A compatible stylus is useful for handwriting, diagrams, sketching and marking up documents; check that the specific pen works with the specific tablet rather than assuming styluses are interchangeable.
Long writing, coding and specialist software
Before relying on a tablet for long essays, coding, complex file handling or work that involves switching among several apps, try those workflows on the device. Sustained typing can be less comfortable without a keyboard, and some specialist tools may require desktop software or features a tablet does not provide. A laptop or Windows 2-in-1 is often a better fit when those tasks are central to study.
For a student who mostly reads, annotates and writes occasionally, a tablet may be sufficient. For one who spends hours typing or needs a particular desktop application, treat the tablet as a possible companion rather than an automatic laptop replacement.

Choose a screen size with weight and portability in mind
The New Zealand Ministry of Education recommends a screen of 10 inches or larger for a child’s school device and notes that older students may need a larger screen. This is New Zealand guidance, not a universal minimum. Ask the school what it expects, then consider how the student will carry and use the device.
A larger display can make text easier to see and provide more room to interact with documents, but it also adds size and weight. Compare the actual device dimensions and weight alongside screen size: a screen that is pleasant for split-screen work at a desk may be less convenient in a backpack or on a crowded bus.
Use battery, memory and storage figures as starting points
Battery life
The New Zealand Ministry’s parent and caregiver checklist recommends at least six hours of battery life. Treat that as a local school-day guideline rather than a guarantee or universal standard. Real runtime varies with device configuration, screen brightness, video calls, multitasking and other use; compare it with the student’s schedule and access to charging.

For context, Tom’s Guide’s 2026 student-tablet guide reports these in-house battery-test results:

| Apple iPad Air M4, 11-inch | 9 hours 44 minutes |
These are publication test results, not promises of classroom runtime. Test settings and methodology affect comparisons, and a student’s brightness, apps and workload may differ.
RAM and storage
The same New Zealand checklist recommends at least 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. These are baseline recommendations in that guide, not guarantees that a device will feel fast or have enough space for every student. Check the operating system and required apps, as well as how much room remains for the student’s files.

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 buying guidance says 64GB or 128GB may be adequate for basic note-taking, web work and streaming. Students keeping many downloaded lectures or textbooks, creative projects, games or videos on the device should consider 256GB or more. Size storage around actual offline needs, especially if the student will not always have reliable internet access.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Price the complete study setup
The tablet’s listed price may not be the cost of a useful setup. A keyboard can make longer typing and document creation more practical; a stylus can help with handwriting and annotation. Neither accessory is necessary for every student. Confirm both model compatibility and whether an accessory is included before comparing totals.
- Keyboard: consider one if the student will regularly write assignments or create documents. Check whether it is a separate purchase or bundled with the tablet.
- Stylus: consider one for handwritten notes, diagrams, sketching or PDF markup. Verify support for the exact tablet model.
- Case and screen protection: include a protective case or carry bag in the setup cost, and consider a screen protector. The Ministry advises screen protection and preferably a shock-absorbing case or bag.
Compare the total for the tablet and the accessories the student will actually use. A low tablet price can be misleading if essential input accessories are sold separately.

Check durability, repair options and software support
A school device needs to remain usable through years of coursework. Find out how long the manufacturer expects to provide operating-system updates and whether repairs are practical. The New Zealand Ministry advises looking for several years of updates and easy repair; check the applicable support information for the exact model rather than assuming all tablets receive the same support period.
Protection reduces everyday damage risk, but it does not replace checking whether a cracked screen or failing battery can be repaired affordably. Consider how the student will carry the device and whether the chosen case offers shock absorption.
Quick Recap
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Ask the school which operating systems, apps, browsers, extensions, testing tools and BYOD configurations it supports.
- Try the student’s actual demanding tasks on the device, particularly long papers, coding, complex file handling or switching among apps.
- Compare screen readability with the tablet’s dimensions and weight, not screen size alone.
- Check expected battery performance against the school day and the student’s typical brightness, video-call and multitasking use.
- Choose memory and storage with the operating system, apps and offline files in mind; do not treat minimum guidance as a guarantee of suitability.
- Confirm the operating-system update horizon and whether repairs are practical for the exact model.
- Add compatible accessories and protection to the price only if the student’s tasks call for them, and verify whether they are included.
