A compact DAB/DAB+ and FM set may be small and digital, but it does not necessarily connect to the internet. Compare the radio’s size, power, reception, controls and sound against where and how you plan to use it.
First, check how the radio receives stations
Internet radio streams stations over an IP connection, usually Wi-Fi. DAB/DAB+ and FM receive terrestrial broadcasts instead, so they do not need internet access. A radio can offer both kinds of reception, but the specification must explicitly list internet radio or Wi-Fi; DAB/DAB+ plus FM is not enough.

Bluetooth is another separate feature: it lets you play audio from a paired phone or other device. It does not give the radio Wi-Fi or independent access to online stations. If online listening is essential, verify that the radio itself can connect to your network.
Match the radio’s size to its place
“Small” can mean a bedside or kitchen tabletop set, not necessarily a pocketable portable. Check published dimensions and weight against the shelf, counter or bedside space you have. A slimmer depth may help in a narrow spot, while a larger tabletop cabinet may offer room for more controls or a more substantial speaker. Do not infer internet capability from a compact design.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact Internet radio: Handheld, lightweight, practical, and easy to use. Built-in rechargeable battery for power. Store your favorite stations up to 150 and access the top 5 stations with a touch of the 1-5 preset buttons.
- Discover a wide selection of Internet radio stations: Using the [Skytune Search] button is a breeze! Input the CALL letters or keywords of the station name to find the stations. User-friendly web browser control to manage/edit your favorites. Contact us if you can’t find your favorite station.
- Ordinary FM Radio: In addition to Internet radio, this device also receives local FM stations
- Sleep & Dim buttons: You can turn off the display during bedtime and set the radio to auto-off for sleep. Option to display the clock while the radio is playing.
- Connect with other media sources: It allows you to play audio from a Micro SD card and use it as a Bluetooth speaker. You can also play content from UPnP/DLNA-compatible network devices.
Compare power and portability
Check whether the set runs from mains power, replaceable batteries, a rechargeable battery or more than one option. Battery operation makes it easier to move the radio or listen away from an outlet, but the runtime depends on battery condition, temperature, volume and listening use.
For example, Roberts rates the Revival Petite 2 for up to 20 hours of playback. Its 2024 manual describes that figure as approximate and says it varies with volume, battery age and temperature; it is not a guaranteed runtime for every listener. The manual also specifies about six hours to charge. Confirm the power design and charging details for the particular model you are considering.

Check reception where you will listen
For internet stations
Check Wi-Fi coverage in the exact room and position where the radio will sit. A radio that supports internet stations still depends on a usable network connection there.
For DAB/DAB+ and FM
Broadcast reception varies by location. If a station is weak, fully extend the aerial and try moving the radio nearer a window. Before choosing a set for its broadcast tuners, consider whether the stations you want are available at your location.

Make station access easy
Compare the station modes you need, along with presets, search and controls. Presets can make favourites quicker to reach; look at how many are available for each mode rather than relying on the total alone. Roberts specifies 20 presets on the Revival Petite 2, split between 10 DAB and 10 FM. Its example also shows why preset count and online access are separate questions: this model is a broadcast radio, not an internet radio.
For broader access, a hybrid radio combines internet services with broadcast tuners. Roberts lists 60 presets on the Stream 219: 20 internet, 20 DAB and 20 FM. Its product page also lists podcasts, Bluetooth, USB MP3 playback and Spotify Connect. Check whether named services and features are available and supported in your region.

Consider sound and listening habits
Think about whether you mainly listen to speech, background music or music at higher volume. Small speakers and cabinets can involve a trade-off in bass depth and loud playback, so published speaker details, headphone output and controls are worth checking against your use. A compact radio intended for news or spoken-word listening may not be the right choice if fuller music playback is a priority.
TechRadar describes the Pure Elan Connect+ as better suited to voice radio and background music than high-fidelity listening. That is the guide’s assessment, not an independent measurement cited here; listen for yourself if sound quality is a deciding factor.
