Start with the objects you need to print
Before comparing features, measure representative products, including the largest item you expect to run. A printer’s advertised bed size does not by itself establish how much of that area is usable once fixtures, clamps and edge clearance are accounted for. Check the current specification sheet and manual for the exact model.

Print area and object height
Epson describes the SureColor V1070 as an A4 printer with a maximum object height of 2.75 inches. Roland lists an A3 print area and maximum printable object thickness of 90 mm for the VersaSTUDIO BF-16. These are model-specific manufacturer figures; compare the actual usable area and loading limits rather than treating either size as typical of all desktop UV printers. Epson’s V1070 guidance and Roland DG’s BF-16 product page provide the cited specifications.
Flat items, curved objects and fixtures
If you plan to print on pens, golf balls, or other curved objects, ask the seller how the chosen model handles their shape and whether a fixture or rotary attachment is required. Confirm that the setup is supported for the specific printer and that the object fits its height and clearance limits. Mutoh Australia lists an optional rotary unit for its XPJ-461/661UF family, but configurations and availability can differ by market. Verify material compatibility for your exact workflow
Do not buy based on a generic list of “printable materials.” Epson lists wood, acrylic and promotional items such as keychains, golf balls and pens for the V1070. Its guidance also says certain flexible materials, including leather or coated fabrics, may be printable, while noting that the printer works best on flat, stable surfaces and is not intended for T-shirts or very bendable materials. That guidance applies to the V1070; it does not establish compatibility on another printer. Epson’s V1070 guidance covers its stated use cases.
For each material you intend to use, ask the manufacturer or authorized dealer about required coatings, surface preparation, adhesion and shape limits. If the material is important to your business, request a sample print or a documented compatibility recommendation for the exact printer and substrate. A material name alone does not guarantee a durable or satisfactory result.

Compare the ink channels and layer workflow
CMYK produces color; white ink can provide an opaque underlay on dark or transparent substrates, while gloss or matte varnish can add a finish effect. Whether those capabilities help depends on how the printer and its software handle the required layers, the material, print mode and maintenance routine.

These are manufacturers’ published product descriptions, not independent side-by-side test results. Check the precise configuration offered in your country: family names can cover different sizes or options, and regional availability may vary. For any printer, ask how to create white and varnish layers, which print modes support them, and what those modes mean for speed and maintenance.

Check that the software fits your files and production
The included RIP software—the application that prepares artwork and print settings—can affect daily usability as much as the printer itself. Epson says the V1070 includes Epson Edge Print PRO, so its maker states that no extra software is required for that model. That does not establish that its included workflow suits every shop. Epson’s V1070 guidance describes the included software.
- Ask whether the RIP supports the file formats your team uses and the color-management controls you need.
- Confirm how white underlays and varnish layers are created, previewed and assigned.
- Check whether nesting multiple jobs on the bed is supported and practical for your work.
- Compare speed only for equivalent artwork, print mode and ink-layer setup; headline figures without those conditions are not a reliable production comparison.
Understand cleaning, ink and operating constraints
UV printers require routine attention; make sure the upkeep is realistic for your staff and production volume. Epson advises a daily nozzle check for the V1070, with cleaning when needed. Follow the selected model’s manual for its actual cleaning schedule, consumables and waste handling rather than assuming another manufacturer’s routine applies. Epson’s V1070 guidance gives its nozzle-check advice.

Epson states that the V1070 uses genuine Epson-brand ink packs only. Verify the exact ink pack SKU and regional availability with the seller, and ask about ink cost, cleaning supplies, expected usage and printhead service. These factors affect operating cost, but the cited manufacturer pages do not establish current street prices or comparative cost per print.

Measure the space for the printer and room to load objects, operate the machine and carry out maintenance. Epson lists the V1070 at 28 × 28 × 17 inches and about 130 lb, includes two activated-carbon air filters to help reduce odor, and recommends a well-ventilated workspace. These are V1070-specific manufacturer statements, not a substitute for ventilation or installation instructions for another model. Epson’s V1070 guidance contains its workspace information.

Roland DG says UV-protection glasses are required for the BF-16. Consult the exact printer’s current manual for required protective equipment, installation and operating precautions; do not infer that one model’s safety instructions apply to another. Roland DG’s BF-16 product page states its glasses requirement.
Check warranty, service and regional supply before ordering
A printer’s purchase price is only one part of the decision. Ask the seller to confirm the warranty in your region, whether service is available locally or through an authorized provider, typical response arrangements, and the availability of ink and maintenance supplies. Epson lists limited warranty and extended service-plan availability for the V1070, but terms depend on the offer and location; confirm them directly before purchase. Epson’s V1070 product listing describes its ink requirement and service-plan availability.
Request written answers tied to the exact model and configuration you are buying. A manufacturer’s specification page can establish what it claims about features, but it does not establish independent durability, print quality, operating cost or current local stock.
