The right ecommerce help desk is the one that brings your customers’ actual support channels into a clear ticket workflow, gives agents useful order context, and lets them complete the work your store needs without creating unsafe automation or unmanageable costs. Judge it against your store platform and real support cases—not an integration logo or a generic feature checklist.
Start with the work your support team actually handles
Before comparing software, map the conversations your team receives and what agents do to resolve them. Use your own support history to identify the busiest channels and recurring reasons for contact. Typical ecommerce cases include order-status questions, shipping delays, returns, refunds, cancellations, and discount requests.

This inventory helps you avoid paying for a channel or automation feature your customers rarely use. It also gives you realistic test cases for a vendor demonstration. A shared inbox is useful only if it brings in the channels you need and lets agents keep ownership and status clear as conversations move toward resolution.

Consider email, contact forms, website chat, phone, SMS, and relevant social messaging. Distinguish native connections from third-party app connections and any channels that require an add-on. Gorgias’s launch guide, for example, describes connecting these channel types and recommends setting up high-volume channels first; it also notes that some connections use its app store or require an add-on.

Record recurring work and exceptions
For each common contact reason, note what the agent needs to see, what action they take, and when the case needs human judgment. For a shipping-delay ticket, that could mean checking fulfillment and tracking details, responding with an approved explanation, and escalating a shipment with an unusual scan history. For a return, it could mean confirming the order, checking the store’s policy, and deciding whether an exception needs approval.
Evaluate the commerce integration by what agents can do
A statement that software “integrates with Shopify” or “supports ecommerce” does not establish that it exposes the data or order actions your team needs. Check the specific platform, plan, data synchronization, and workflows. Customer matching, order history, fulfillment status, and actions available from a ticket can differ by platform.
Gorgias’s official Shopify integration documentation describes customer order history, shipping details, purchase data, customer notes, fulfillment status, and order notes alongside tickets. It also documents certain Shopify order actions from the ticket sidebar, including duplicating, canceling, refunding, or editing an order through macros. These are vendor-documented capabilities for its Shopify integration, not proof that the same features are available for every commerce platform or plan.
Gorgias’s platform compatibility documentation shows why the distinction matters: it lists Shopify as compatible with all of its listed automation features, while feature availability differs for BigCommerce, Magento 2, WooCommerce, and Prestashop. The documentation says AI Agent, Flows, and Order Management require an active AI Agent subscription. This compatibility information is subject to change, so confirm current access with the vendor for your store and plan.
Run the same cases in every demonstration
- “Where is my order?”: Ask the vendor to show how the ticket is matched to a customer and order, and whether the agent can see fulfillment and tracking information.
- Shipping delay: Test what happens when a carrier scan is late, missing, or ambiguous. Confirm what the agent sees and how an exception is routed.
- Return or refund: Check whether the agent can review relevant order details and carry out the action in the ticket, or must switch systems. Ask what approvals or policy controls apply.
- Cancellation or order edit: Confirm which actions the connection supports for your platform and whether they are available on the plan being quoted.
- Multiple orders or stores: Test whether the system matches the correct order and keeps store-specific context distinct.
For each case, verify the data shown, the action available, the synchronization behavior, and what happens if the system cannot confidently match the customer or order. Ask the vendor to demonstrate your exact store platform rather than extrapolating from a feature matrix.

Choose channels for agent workflow, not channel count
Channel coverage is more than a list of icons. Check whether incoming conversations land in a place where agents can assign ownership, track status, see relevant customer context, and continue the conversation without losing its history. Confirm which connections are built in, which rely on third-party apps, and whether any carry extra costs.
Prioritize channels using your own contact mix. If email and contact forms account for most requests, getting those right may matter more than adding every social or messaging channel on day one. If customers rely on social messaging, phone, or SMS, test those flows directly—including how replies, ownership, and conversation history appear to agents.

Gorgias’s launch guide describes email, live chat, contact forms, phone, SMS, and social media connections, while noting that available capabilities can vary by commerce platform. The Shopify App Store listing describes Gorgias as a unified platform across email, chat, social, voice, and SMS; that is a vendor-provided marketplace description, not an independent assessment of how well each channel works for a particular store.
Match automation to repeatable work—and define the handoff
Automation can reduce repetitive handling, but only when it reflects your actual policies and gives unusual cases a safe route to a person. Review routing rules, tags and priorities, reusable response templates, self-service, AI assistance, and escalation. Establish what the system is allowed to do automatically, what needs approval, and how it behaves when information is incomplete or a request falls outside policy.
Build a realistic automation test set
- Use recurring requests such as order status, returns, shipping delays, and discount questions. These are among the macro examples in Gorgias’s launch guide.
- Add exceptions: no matching order, multiple possible orders, split shipments, a late or missing carrier scan, a refund request, and a policy exception.
- Check whether an agent can review or correct the proposed response or action before it reaches the customer.
- Test how the workflow escalates a case that needs judgment, approval, or additional information.
- Confirm which features depend on the connected commerce platform, subscription, or add-on.
Do not assume that an automation feature works identically across store platforms. Gorgias’s compatibility documentation states that AI Agent, Flows, and Order Management require an active AI Agent subscription and lists different compatibility across commerce platforms. Confirm current requirements and behavior for your specific configuration.

Check ownership, service coverage, and reporting
A workable ticket system should make it clear who owns each conversation and whether it is open, pending, or resolved. Assess assignment, priorities, business hours, after-hours routing, escalation, and how multiple stores are separated. These controls matter when a request crosses shifts, waits on a customer or carrier, or needs a specialist.
Review reporting with operational questions in mind: how many conversations arrive, what is waiting, how response and resolution are measured, and which contact reasons create recurring workload. Ask what can be exported and whether reports separate channels, stores, or teams in ways that match your operation. A dashboard is only useful if its definitions and data fit the decisions you need to make.
eDesk’s 2026 ecommerce customer-service guide identifies centralized communication, customer context, scalability, service levels, accountability, and analysis as help desk goals. Those are vendor-published selection criteria; they do not establish that adopting a particular product improves outcomes by a specific amount.
Compare the evidence, not just the feature labels
The following examples show what the cited vendor materials establish—and what they do not. They are not a ranked product comparison or an independent product test.
| Evidence area | What the documentation states | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Gorgias with Shopify | Gorgias’s Shopify integration documentation describes customer and order context in the ticket sidebar, including order history, shipping details, fulfillment status, notes, and certain order actions. | That identical capabilities exist for every commerce platform, plan, store configuration, or workflow. |
| Gorgias channels | Its launch guide describes email, live chat, contact forms, phone, SMS, and social connections, with some connections made through an app store or requiring an add-on. | The total cost or exact channel availability for a particular merchant’s configuration. |
| Gorgias automation compatibility | Its compatibility documentation says AI Agent, Flows, and Order Management require an active AI Agent subscription, and lists platform-specific differences. | That the compatibility matrix is unchanged today or that a feature will meet a merchant’s needs without a workflow demonstration. |
| eDesk selection guidance | Its 2026 guide discusses goals such as centralizing communication, using customer context, scaling service, and analyzing support operations. | A detailed, independently verified feature comparison, current prices, or proof of performance improvement. |
Gorgias’s product page displays claims of “30% less labor cost,” “43% faster first response time,” and “44% higher LTV after a year.” The cited page excerpt does not establish the underlying population, methodology, or year for those percentages, so they should not be treated as general benchmarks or predictions for another store.

Calculate total cost and implementation effort
There is no vendor-neutral price or response-time benchmark established here. Request a written quote based on the way your team will actually use the software, and separate recurring charges from one-time implementation costs.
- Agent seats and expected ticket volume
- Channel connections and any app or add-on charges
- AI or automation access and usage terms
- Number of stores and required integrations
- Onboarding, configuration, and training
- Monthly versus annual commitment and contract terms
Also account for the time needed to connect systems, configure routing and business hours, build macros, train agents, and maintain integrations. Confirm current pricing, add-on charges, AI terms, service levels, data handling, and contract conditions in writing; the cited materials do not establish those terms.
A practical way to choose
- Map demand: Use support history to identify the channels and contact reasons that account for your workload.
- Set minimum requirements: Specify the store data and order actions agents must access, the channels that must be supported, and the controls needed for assignment and escalation.
- Choose representative tickets: Include common requests and the exceptions that require a human decision.
- Demonstrate your platform: Have each vendor show the same cases using your commerce platform and the plan under consideration.
- Score the same criteria: Compare commerce integration depth, channel workflow, routing and ownership, automation fit and handoff, reporting, implementation effort, and total cost.
- Confirm the commercial terms: Get a written quote and verify plan gates, add-ons, AI usage, service levels, data handling, and contract terms before committing.
This approach is a decision framework, not a scored independent vendor test. The strongest choice is the product that demonstrably supports your real workflows on your platform, with costs and operational requirements your team can sustain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should a help desk replace a store’s order-management system?
Not necessarily. A help desk organizes customer conversations and may expose selected order information or actions inside tickets. The documented Gorgias-Shopify integration is an example of ticket-side access to some order details and actions; it does not establish that a help desk replaces every order-management function. Keep the store platform or other system of record responsible for functions the support tool does not document.
Can vendor-reported results predict what another store will achieve?
No. A product-page percentage without a clear population, method, and timeframe cannot be applied as a general expectation. Treat vendor performance figures as claims about that vendor’s own results unless the supporting evidence is available and relevant to your store.
