Choose an open-world space game by checking whether friends can travel and make meaningful progress together—not just whether the store page says “multiplayer.” Confirm online co-op first, then compare exploration, shared activities, grouping, learning curve, and the balance of combat, building, trading, and PvP.
Is this multiplayer or co-op?
They are not interchangeable. A game may have online players or a shared social space without supporting the kind of cooperative progression your group wants. Check the developer’s description for explicit online co-op, then find out whether friends can actually join the same session and do the main activities together.

EVERSPACE 2 is a useful caution: its developer describes it as an open-world single-player RPG and explicitly says it is not multiplayer or co-op. Open-world scale alone tells you nothing about whether friends can play together. ROCKFISH Games’ EVERSPACE 2 page

Look beyond the label. Some games let you move among planets, stations, and star systems as part of a continuous universe; others organize exploration around discrete missions or locations. Decide which experience your group wants before comparing other features.

No Man’s Sky is an example of continuous exploration: Hello Games describes travel from planetary surface to space and the ability to visit stars. That is a description of this game, not a guarantee that every space game has the same structure. Hello Games: About No Man’s Sky
Can friends do the activities that matter together?
Make a list of what your group hopes to do, then check whether those activities are supported in co-op. A multiplayer label is less useful than knowing whether the group can travel, fight, build, collect resources, take on missions, and advance story content together.

- 5-MINUTE ROUNDS. Fast enough for a party warm-up or a quick break; intense enough that you'll immediately want to play again.
- COOPERATIVE CHAOS. Everyone shouts simultaneously to trade tools and fix the spaceship before time runs out. Nobody's a bystander.
- WATERPROOF PLASTIC CARDS. 100% plastic construction is tear-resistant and spill-proof. survives the chaotic table conditions this game creates.
- ADJUSTABLE DIFFICULTY. From relaxed casual mode to full-speed expert, difficulty scales to your group's energy level.
- 3–6 PLAYERS | AGES 12+ | GREAT ICE BREAKER. Perfect opener for game nights, team-building events, and family gatherings.
Hello Games describes No Man’s Sky as supporting exploration, space battles, communal bases, and shared story progression. Those features make it a relevant example for groups interested in a mix of activities; they do not establish that every activity suits every player or that all progress is shared in the same way. How do grouping and shared-world play work?
Find out how friends meet up and whether the game offers invites, parties, matchmaking, or access to a persistent shared world. Also check what happens when players switch activities or leave and return; a shared universe does not by itself promise seamless sessions.

Star Citizen provides examples of documented grouping and shared-world structure: RSI explains how to group with friends, while its beginner guide identifies the Persistent Universe as a game mode. These pages establish that the features exist, not that every session is seamless or technically reliable. RSI support: Grouping Up and RSI: Play Star Citizen
What does a player-count figure actually describe?
Read the context attached to any advertised number. Hello Games says up to 32 players can use No Man’s Sky’s Space Anomaly social hub. That figure applies to the hub; it is not stated as the co-op party limit for every activity or location. Hello Games: No Man’s Sky

How much learning does the group want?
Compare the demands of onboarding, flight controls, navigation, crafting, survival systems, and the in-game economy. A game can support grouping and still require substantial individual learning or outside guides. Check the beginner resources and tutorials before committing to a long campaign, especially if the group has mixed experience.

RSI’s getting-started documentation points players to multiple modes and an in-world interaction system, illustrating why onboarding deserves its own check rather than being inferred from a multiplayer feature list. It does not establish a comparable difficulty rating against other games. RSI: Play Star Citizen

Which kind of space activity does your group want?
Decide whether the appeal is exploration, ship combat, building, resource gathering, trading, or competition with other players. A game’s activity emphasis can shape the whole co-op experience: the group looking for relaxed discovery may not want the same risks or systems as one seeking an economy or player conflict.
No Man’s Sky’s official description includes exploration and combat. EVE Online’s official materials frame it as a social space MMO, and describe play involving ship modules. These descriptions indicate different emphases, not equivalent cooperative structures. CCP’s 2026 letter describes an intended progression from solo play toward co-play and shared purpose; treat that as the developer’s stated direction, not a guarantee about every activity available now. Quick Recap
What to verify before starting
- Confirm that the specific game, edition, and platform support online co-op.
- Check how friends invite or join one another and whether the game has a party or shared-world system.
- Look for activity-specific details: a hub’s player count may not be a party cap elsewhere.
- Verify cross-play, save hosting, platform compatibility, and session persistence in current game and platform documentation; those details can change and are not established across the examples here.
- Compare the game’s learning demands and activity mix with the whole group’s preferences.
