Choose an Android note app by checking what stays on your phone, what you can find, how syncing works, and who can read synced notes—not by treating “offline,” “search,” and “encrypted” as interchangeable promises. If direct access to files matters most, look for local-first storage. If effortless access across devices matters more, look for a cloud-connected service. For sensitive notes, verify whether sync is end-to-end encrypted and understand how account or key recovery works.
Start with the job you need the app to do
Before comparing features, decide which trade-off matters most. A local-first app keeps notes in a device folder or app storage; a cloud service prioritizes synchronization between devices; an encrypted-sync service aims to add stronger protection to remote copies. These are different storage and sync models, not a single good-to-bad scale.

- Choose local-first storage if you want direct control of files and less dependence on an account or provider.
- Choose cloud-connected notes if you need convenient access from multiple devices and are comfortable with the service’s handling of your data.
- Prioritize end-to-end encryption if the provider should not be able to read remote notes, and make sure you can safely retain the key or passphrase.
Whichever model you prefer, test it on the Android device you actually use. An app’s ability to sync does not guarantee that every note, attachment, or recent edit is available offline.

“Works offline” can mean that you can open existing notes, create and edit notes, or access attachments that were downloaded earlier. Check each separately. Then reconnect and confirm that offline edits appear on your other devices as expected.

- Google Keep: Google says files uploaded to Keep and selected for offline access are stored on the device. That describes selected content, not a guarantee that every item is available offline. Google Keep Help
- Obsidian: Obsidian describes notes as local by default. On Android, its documentation distinguishes a vault folder from private app storage; a folder can keep files independent of the app installation, but using it requires broader file access. Obsidian for Android
- Standard Notes: Standard Notes says its mobile app can create, read, and edit notes offline, then sync changes after reconnection. This is the company’s description of its service, not an independent reliability test. Standard Notes
- Microsoft OneNote: Microsoft documents OneNote syncing with OneDrive and a setting to sync only on Wi-Fi. That support guidance does not establish that every notebook section or attachment is available offline in every situation. Microsoft OneNote sync support
For any app, try a realistic offline check: disable Wi-Fi and mobile data, open older notes, create and edit a note, and open attachments you expect to need. Reconnect and verify the edits on another device if you use one. For cloud-backed files, also check whether the service can remove local copies to save storage.
Test what search can actually find
A search box is not proof that search covers everything you store. Search scope may differ for note titles, body text, tags, checklists, attachments, handwriting, and text recognized from images. If one of those matters to you, create a small test note containing it and check the result on your phone, including offline if offline search is important.

Search also has privacy implications. Google says it processes Keep content for features that include category search and handwriting recognition, while also saying Keep content is not used for advertising. Google’s statement that “The content you save on Keep is private to you, from others, unless you choose to share it” should be read alongside its explanation of that processing and its cloud storage model. Understand where notes are stored and who can read synced copies
Encryption claims need to be read precisely. Encryption in transit protects data as it moves between devices and a service; encryption at rest protects stored data. Neither phrase, by itself, means that only you hold the key. End-to-end encryption is intended to prevent the provider from reading remote content, but local device files are a separate question.

Obsidian’s default storage model is local, with no account requirement, according to the company. That does not by itself prove that files on a phone are encrypted at rest. Obsidian also says third-party sync setups can need special care: its guide warns that OneDrive may not work well for Android syncing, recommends keeping vault files available offline when a provider might offload them, and says Google Drive is not officially supported for vault sync. Check recovery and your route out
Privacy choices have practical costs if you lose access or later switch apps. Before trusting an app with a large archive, find out what export formats it offers, whether attachments are included, and whether you can recover your account or encryption key.
- Google points users to Google Takeout for downloading account data. Google Keep Help
- Obsidian warns that if you lose the end-to-end encryption password for Sync, the company cannot recover the remote vault; it remains encrypted and unusable. Obsidian Sync security
- For any provider, test an export with a few notes and attachments before moving an irreplaceable archive. A backup is useful only if you can open and restore it.
A quick Android note-app checklist
- Identify the storage model: determine whether notes are in app-managed cloud storage, private app storage, or ordinary files in a folder or vault.
- Run an offline test: with Wi-Fi and mobile data off, open and edit notes and attachments you expect to need.
- Check sync after reconnecting: confirm offline edits reach the other devices you use, and look for documented Android limitations or conflict guidance.
- Test search against your own content: try titles, body text, tags, checklists, attachments, and handwriting if relevant.
- Read the encryption claim carefully: distinguish transport and storage encryption from end-to-end encryption, and check separately whether local files are protected.
- Test the exit plan: export a sample, verify what it contains, and securely retain any recovery credentials or encryption passphrase.
App requirements, settings, and features can change. Standard Notes’ product page describes Android support from version 7.0, but check its current requirements and feature availability before installing. Standard Notes
