Before subscribing to a VPN, check what its app actually encrypts, what information it collects or shares, which permissions it requests, and whether independent sources support the provider’s claims. A VPN changes who handles your traffic; it does not make you anonymous or automatically make every online activity safe.
What a VPN changes—and what it does not
A VPN app routes device traffic through servers controlled by the VPN provider. Some apps encrypt data between your device and the VPN server. Your traffic may then appear to websites to come from that server, but the VPN provider becomes another party you must trust. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains this basic trade-off.

A VPN does not erase information you give websites, such as details you enter into an account. The FTC cautions that a VPN app generally will not make you entirely anonymous. Treat claims such as “invisible online” or “complete anonymity” as a reason to ask harder questions, not as a guaranteed result.

Use this checklist to compare VPN subscriptions
1. Confirm what traffic is encrypted
Look for a clear explanation of whether the app encrypts traffic and what traffic its protection covers. Do not assume that every app called a VPN encrypts all device traffic: the FTC warns that some VPN apps have used protocols that do not encrypt traffic, or encrypt only some of it. The evidence here does not establish one required encryption standard for every service, so verify the specific app and its current documentation rather than relying on the VPN label alone.

2. Read what the provider collects, retains, and shares
Read the current privacy policy for the particular app and subscription. Check what information the provider collects, how long it retains it, and whether it shares information or traffic with advertisers or other third parties. “No logs” is a claim to investigate in the policy and supporting evidence; the phrase by itself is not proof.
Free VPN apps are not all alike. The FTC notes that some free apps may include advertising or share or redirect traffic through third parties. Evaluate the terms of the specific service rather than assuming that every free VPN behaves the same way—or that paying automatically makes a provider trustworthy.

3. Review app permissions and behavior
Before installing, check the permissions the app requests on your device and whether each one makes sense for its stated purpose. Unexpected or sensitive permissions deserve scrutiny. A VPN subscription’s price or marketing does not answer whether its app’s access is proportionate.

Research the app and its developer outside the provider’s own website. Consider reputable independent reviews, available developer information, and whether the privacy and encryption claims are described clearly enough to assess. In 2018, the FTC reported that researchers had studied almost 300 VPN apps and found potential privacy and security risks in some. That figure is not a current count of the market, and it does not establish that any particular app is unsafe.

5. Match the VPN to the actual need
Decide what outcome you want before paying. A personal consumer VPN and a VPN required by an employer or other organization are different contexts. If an organization requires a particular VPN, follow its instructions rather than substituting a consumer service. A VPN is not a universal solution for anonymity, scams, malware, phishing, or account security.

Not necessarily. The FTC’s February 2023 consumer guidance says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because most websites now use encryption. HTTPS protects the connection between your device and a website, but it does not prove that the website itself is legitimate. An encrypted connection to a scammer’s site does not protect you from the scam.

Use ordinary account and device protections whether or not you use a VPN: choose strong passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and keep your operating system, browser, and security software up to date. These steps address risks a VPN does not solve.

Questions to answer before you subscribe
- Does the provider explain which traffic its app encrypts?
- What data does its current privacy policy say it collects, retains, or shares?
- Do the app’s device permissions fit its purpose?
- Is there credible information about the developer and meaningful independent coverage?
- Does the service meet a specific need that your existing device, account, or organizational protections do not?
