What to Look for in a Private AI Platform

A practical guide to evaluating private AI platforms by deployment boundary, data lifecycle, security evidence, operations, and performance on your own workloads.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evaluate a private AI platform by defining where data must stay, tracing how it is handled, checking who operates the system, reviewing evidence for the exact deployment, and testing it on your own workloads. “Private” alone does not tell you whether a service runs on your premises, in your cloud account, or in a vendor-managed environment—or what happens to prompts and logs.

Define what “private” must mean for your organization

Start with a precise boundary, not a product label. Decide whether data must remain on premises, inside a named cloud account or region, or whether contractual limits on retention and access are sufficient. Also identify any components that may be outside that boundary, such as management services or support systems.

Private AI does not necessarily mean on-premises. Cohere’s Private Deployment Overview describes both on-premises and virtual private cloud (VPC) deployment paths, and characterizes private deployments as running models within a controlled, internal environment. That is Cohere’s description of its offering, not a universal industry definition. Cohere names AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure as possible cloud environments.

Trace every part of the data flow

Ask the vendor to map the lifecycle of prompts, responses, retrieved documents, embeddings, logs, backups, and telemetry. For each, establish where it is processed and stored, who can access it, whether it is used for training, and how and when it is deleted. A promise about prompt retention does not answer what happens to logs, backups, or retrieved content.

OpenClaw Mini AI Agent Server RK3566/H618 Local LLM Device
  • LOCAL LLM DEPLOYMENT: Powered by RK3566/H618 ARM processor, enabling fully offline private AI computing without relying on cloud services.
  • ULTRA-LOW POWER CONSUMPTION: Runs at just 5W, keeping energy usage minimal while staying online 24/7 as a home lab or personal web server.
  • WHISPER-QUIET OPERATION: Fanless design operates at an ultra-silent 25dB, making it ideal for home or office environments without disruptive noise.
  • PRIVATE DATA STORAGE: Keeps all AI workloads and data stored locally on-device, ensuring complete privacy with no data sent to external servers.
  • VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY: Features dual USB ports and a TF card slot, supporting WeChat Claw-Bot integration and self-hosted AI assistant deployments.
  • Processing: Which systems handle each data type, and where are those systems located?
  • Access: Can vendor personnel, subprocessors, or customer administrators view the data? What controls and audit records apply?
  • Retention: What is kept, for how long, and under what exceptions?
  • Deletion: Does deletion cover replicas, backups, and derived data, and can the vendor document completion?
  • Training and telemetry: Is customer content used to train or improve models, and what operational signals leave the environment?

Product-specific privacy designs illustrate why the details matter. Apple’s Private Cloud Compute Security Guide describes a goal of using personal data only to fulfill a request and making it inaccessible after the response. OpenAI’s ZDR with Private Safety Processing describes customer-controlled storage and workflow-specific data handling. These descriptions apply to those products and configurations; they do not establish how another platform handles data.

Compare deployment options and operational responsibility

The deployment model affects who controls infrastructure and who must keep it running. Cohere says customers manage infrastructure for its private deployments, including hardware compatibility and prerequisites. For on-premises installations, customers procure GPUs, servers, and other hardware; for VPC deployment, the cloud provider supplies the underlying infrastructure. Confirm the division of work for the specific offer rather than assuming a private label includes managed operations.

  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).

File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Deployment option What to establish
On premises Who procures and maintains servers and GPUs, provides compatible hardware, installs prerequisites, and plans capacity?
Customer VPC Which cloud account and region host each component, what cloud resources are required, and who manages the customer’s cloud configuration?
Vendor-hosted private tenancy or mixed deployment Which components remain in the customer’s environment, which are vendor-hosted, and what access and data-handling terms apply to each?

For any option, assign ownership for patching, monitoring, upgrades, endpoint management, incident response, backups, and capacity planning. Ask which tasks are included in the contract, which fall to your team, and what support or service commitments apply.

Ask for evidence tied to the product and configuration

Request documentation that matches the deployment you are evaluating. A general security statement or a description of a different product is not enough to establish how your proposed system behaves.

  • Architecture and data-flow diagrams, including external services and subprocessors.
  • Identity and access controls for users, administrators, and vendor personnel.
  • Encryption details and who controls the keys.
  • Retention, deletion, backup, and training-use terms.
  • Audit logging, vulnerability management, and relevant independent assurance.
  • Contractual data-processing terms and service commitments for the exact deployment.

The available documentation is scoped: Apple describes its Private Cloud Compute design, OpenAI describes a particular safety-processing workflow, and ElevenLabs says detailed private-deployment documentation is available only to authorized customers. ElevenLabs’ Private deployments page is therefore not a substitute for reviewing the technical materials and contract available for a particular offer.

For systems processing personal data, the European Data Protection Board’s 2025 training material, Fundamentals of Secure AI Systems with Personal Data, presents technical considerations before and during deployment. A private deployment is not, by itself, evidence of legal or regulatory compliance; assess the actual processing and your organization’s obligations.

Test the platform on representative work

Run a proof of concept with the same tasks, data conditions, and acceptance criteria across candidates. Include the parts of the workflow that matter in production, not just a model demo: retrieval, integrations, access controls, and expected concurrency where relevant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Model quality on representative prompts and outputs.
  • Retrieval accuracy against your documents and expected questions.
  • Latency and throughput under the workload you expect.
  • Infrastructure or cloud spend, licensing, support, and internal staffing effort.
  • Operational behavior, including monitoring, upgrades, and capacity changes.

No comparable cross-vendor benchmark or cost study is established by the cited materials. Treat quality, speed, and savings as questions for your own evaluation rather than assuming a universal winner.
