What to Look for in a Handheld Gaming PC for Upscaling Support

Check a handheld’s exact upscaler, compatible games, native display resolution, processor and power conditions before relying on upscaling support.

To judge upscaling on a handheld gaming PC, check the exact model’s supported technology, whether it works inside a game or at driver level, which games support it, the screen’s native resolution, and the power conditions behind any performance claims. A processor’s feature list alone does not guarantee that a particular game can use an upscaler.

Which upscaling feature does the handheld actually support?

Start with the exact device model and its software, then distinguish game-integrated upscaling from driver-level scaling. The names can sound similar, but they work differently and have different compatibility limits.

Game-integrated FSR

AMD describes FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) as an in-game upscaling technology, with frame generation available in some versions. AMD says FSR versions 1, 2, 3, and 4 are available only in select games, require integration by the game developer, and are supported on select AMD products. Check the game’s graphics settings and the device’s documentation; an AMD processor does not make FSR available in every game. AMD’s Ryzen Z-series documentation lists processor families, but game support remains a separate check.

Driver-level RSR

Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) is ASUS’s driver-level scaling option for ROG Ally. ASUS says it can be useful when a game does not offer FSR: its example is to set the game to 720p and scale the image to the Ally’s 1080p display. ASUS also says RSR does not affect a game already set to 1080p. This describes ASUS’s implementation; do not assume another handheld or operating system offers the same controls or behavior. Will it work in the games you play?

Make a short list of the games that matter to you and check each one. For FSR, look for an in-game setting or a game-specific support listing; support for one title does not imply support across a library. If a title lacks in-game FSR, find out whether the handheld provides a separate driver-level option and whether that option works with the game. Feature availability can depend on the game, device, drivers, and software configuration.

How does the screen resolution affect the choice?

Compare the panel’s native resolution with the resolution you expect the game to render at. Rendering below native resolution may improve performance, but the upscaler determines how that image is reconstructed. The result is game-dependent, so a feature name or resolution specification cannot tell you how the image will look in a particular title.

What do the processor and operating system tell you?

Processor support is one part of compatibility, not the whole answer. AMD’s Ryzen Z-series documentation covers multiple processor families, including Z1 and Z2 products with different graphics architectures and specifications. Verify the processor in the exact listing rather than treating “Ryzen Z” as one uniform configuration. Then check the device maker’s software and driver support for the feature you want.

The operating system can matter too. Lenovo describes FSR and band-limited pixel scaling for SteamOS models of Legion Go S. That is a model- and platform-specific description, not evidence that every Legion Go S configuration—or every handheld PC—offers identical options. Confirm the operating system and configuration for the particular unit. Lenovo’s Legion Go S product information identifies the platform-specific features.

Are performance claims based on battery or plugged-in use?

Power mode can change the conditions under which a handheld runs games. ASUS lists 10W Silent, 15W Performance, and 25W Turbo modes for the Ally X, with Turbo reaching 30W when connected to AC. ASUS’s published test notes specify Windows 11, a 120 Hz 1920×1080 display, 30W Turbo, and the device plugged in with 65W power delivery; ASUS also says results vary with configuration and newer drivers. These are manufacturer specifications and test conditions, not a promise of the same performance on battery. Consult the ROG Ally X product page and keep the stated conditions attached to any performance figure.

A practical checklist before you buy

  1. Identify the exact SKU: confirm the processor, graphics configuration, operating system, and display for the listing you plan to buy.
  2. Check the upscaler and how it works: determine whether it is game-integrated, such as FSR, or a device’s driver-level option, such as ASUS RSR.
  3. Verify game compatibility: check the settings or support information for the games you actually play; do not infer support from the processor name.
  4. Compare render and panel resolutions: consider the game’s available render settings and the handheld’s native display resolution.
  5. Read performance conditions: note the power mode, whether testing was plugged in, and the software or driver configuration behind any cited result.
  6. Confirm the current configuration: regional variants, drivers, and game support can change, so verify details for the unit and software version available to you.

There is no controlled cross-device comparison here establishing which handheld delivers the best upscaled image, frame rate, or battery life. Those outcomes should not be inferred from feature labels or manufacturer specifications alone.
