The folding design tells you little about software support. Before switching, check the exact phone model, operating system, software version, carrier variant, and the services your family, work, or travel routines depend on.
Start with the phone’s operating system—not its shape
“Flip phone” describes a form factor, not an app platform. Some feature phones run KaiOS and offer a limited selection of apps; others, such as the Punkt MP02, are deliberately built without an app store. Check the operating system and the manufacturer’s current support information for the specific model you are considering.

KaiOS.dev’s app overview lists Google Maps among apps available on KaiOS, but that operating-system-level listing does not guarantee that every KaiOS phone has the same app, features, or usability. The KaiOS FAQ, as of January 2026, says many popular social, music, chat, and shopping apps are unavailable and that WhatsApp is not officially available.

Do not count on WhatsApp being available
HMD says WhatsApp on the HMD-made KaiOS phones covered by its support page was available only until early 2025 for users who had logged in before June 25, 2024. That is a past, limited support window—not a current WhatsApp feature to rely on when buying one of those phones.

Know what a limited phone gives up
Punkt says the MP02 supports calls, SMS, Wi-Fi and USB tethering, Bluetooth, and Pigeon messaging with Signal-compatible contacts. It does not support WhatsApp, Spotify, email, web browsing, or social media, and has no app store. Pigeon is a separate way to message compatible Signal users; it does not automatically reach someone through WhatsApp or another messaging service. Punkt describes the MP02 as “purpose-built for simplicity”—the manufacturer’s framing of the device.
Can you use Google Maps on a flip phone?
Possibly, but an available Maps app is not automatically a full replacement for smartphone navigation. KaiOS.dev lists Google Maps for the platform; that does not establish that a particular phone offers the route modes, voice guidance, live traffic, or usability you need.
Punkt’s MP02 FAQ says its GPS module does not provide conventional navigation or map services. If you depend on directions, verify the exact phone’s mapping app and features, including whether mobile data is needed. If navigation is safety-critical, keep a backup way to get directions.
Will group texts work?
First find out what kind of group conversation you use. “Group text” can mean SMS/MMS, RCS, Apple’s iMessage, or a separate messaging app; compatibility with one does not establish compatibility with the others.

SMS/MMS support depends on the phone and software
KaiOS.dev says group SMS/MMS support varies on KaiOS 2.5 devices, while devices running KaiOS 3.0 or higher support group SMS/MMS. The same overview says KaiOS does not support RCS, a richer messaging standard used as an alternative to iMessage in many Android conversations. A group that uses RCS may therefore behave differently from one sending ordinary SMS/MMS.
Software updates can matter even on a phone whose platform supports group texts. Verizon’s TCL FLIP 3 update history lists a December 18, 2025 update that addressed “Group texting issues.” That dated entry does not establish that every group-text problem is resolved on every variant.

- Device operates within approved frequencies overlapping with the following cellular bands: LTE 255,Unlicensed NII-3 DOWN | LTE 46,TD Unlicensed DOWN
Check the specific MMS limits
Punkt’s MP02 FAQ says the phone can receive MMS but currently cannot forward MMS to other recipients. Its Pigeon service is for messaging with Signal-compatible users, rather than a universal substitute for SMS/MMS or other apps.
Before making a flip phone your only phone, test the actual family, school, or work groups you rely on. Confirm that replies reach every member and that photos or other MMS content behave as you expect.

Verify carrier and network compatibility before buying
“Unlocked,” “4G,” or a SIM card that fits does not guarantee that a phone will work on your carrier. Check the exact model and carrier variant for supported bands, VoLTE support, carrier approval, and coverage where you live, work, and regularly travel. Confirm compatibility with the carrier before purchasing; coverage and acceptance can depend on the particular device and location.
Punkt’s MP02 product page gives this device-specific U.S. carrier information:
| Carrier | Punkt’s MP02 listing |
|---|---|
| AT&T | Supported and verified |
| T-Mobile | Supported for coverage, but not supported for VoLTE |
| Verizon | Not supported for coverage or VoLTE |
This is Punkt’s listing for the MP02, not a general comparison of U.S. carriers. Check with your carrier again for the exact phone variant and your location.
Compare candidate phones against your daily needs
Write down the functions you actually use, then check each against the model’s current documentation and your carrier’s requirements. A side-by-side comparison is more useful than assuming all flip phones share the same capabilities.
- Apps: Which specific apps are essential, and does the exact phone officially support them now?
- Maps: Does it provide route guidance, voice directions, live traffic, and the data access you need?
- Messaging: Do your contacts use SMS/MMS, RCS, iMessage, or app-based chats? Can the phone participate in those conversations as expected?
- Network: Is the exact model approved for your carrier, with the necessary bands and VoLTE support, and does it have coverage in your regular locations?
- Typing and access: Is the keypad and screen workable for how often you text and for any accessibility needs?
- Battery claims: Are quoted figures measured under stated conditions, or do they reflect typical use?
- Variant: Is the phone carrier-locked or intended for a different market?
For example, Punkt lists the MP02 battery as 1,280 mAh, with up to 4.2 hours of talk time and up to 180 hours of standby. Punkt qualifies those maximum runtime figures as ideal-condition results with no SIM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or hotspot enabled; they should not be read as typical real-world battery life.
Quick Recap
A practical pre-switch checklist
- List what you need: Write down the apps, directions, group conversations, and carrier services you use regularly.
- Identify the messaging standard: Ask whether each important group uses SMS/MMS, RCS, iMessage, or a separate app.
- Check the exact phone: Verify its operating system, software version, app support, map features, and carrier-specific variant using current product and support information.
- Confirm network service: Ask your carrier about approval, bands, VoLTE, and coverage for the precise model where you need service.
- Test before relying on it: If possible, check your real group chats and navigation needs before making the phone your only device.
