Before switching grocery stores, compare the cost and convenience of your actual weekly routine—not just shelf prices or a delivery-fee headline. Build the same basket at both stores, check which loyalty offers apply to your online orders, and confirm pickup or delivery service at your address. Fees, prices, rewards and coverage vary by location and can change.
Compare the same weekly basket at both stores
Choose a representative order of the items and quantities your household normally buys. Check the final checkout details for each store rather than comparing a few advertised prices: member-only prices, digital coupons, weighted produce or meat, substitutions, taxes and service charges can all affect the total.

Online totals may not be final. Kroger’s pickup terms say an order total at submission is an estimate; the final amount can reflect applicable loyalty discounts, promotions, coupons, substitutions, service fees, taxes and governmental fees. - Include fees and taxes shown at checkout, not just item prices.
- Notice whether prices or promotions differ for pickup, the store’s own delivery, or a third-party delivery service.
Check whether the loyalty program fits your spending
A rewards rate is useful only if your usual purchases qualify and you can redeem the rewards in a way that matters to your household. Before switching, check eligible purchases, exclusions, earning thresholds, expiration or redemption conditions, and whether online orders count.

Kroger’s rewards terms describe points on eligible purchases associated with a Rewards Number or Alt ID, including eligible online orders, but exclusions and redemption restrictions apply. Make a short list of benefits you would realistically use—such as member prices, digital coupons, fuel rewards or grocery credits—and compare those with your ordinary basket. Do not count a reward at its headline value if you would not otherwise use it.

Evaluate pickup as its own service
Pickup can avoid delivery charges, but its usefulness depends on local availability, suitable time windows, eligible items and how the store handles substitutions. Check the specific store’s options and terms, including any order minimum or pickup fee, before making it your regular routine.

Set substitution preferences before placing an order. If a replacement is not acceptable, find out whether you can reject it at pickup or how to request help after delivery. Kroger’s terms describe options for controlling substitutions and addressing an unwanted replacement; procedures can differ at other retailers.
Compare delivery costs and who fulfills the order
Delivery cost is more than the delivery-fee line. Depending on the service and order, checkout may include a service fee, tip, minimum-order requirement or other charges. A paid membership may waive an eligible delivery fee without removing service fees.

Instacart says eligible Instacart+ orders may have delivery fees waived, while service fees can still apply and vary. It also says pickup generally has no service fee, although a retailer may charge a pickup fee. Fees and taxes depend on location, retailer and order; check the checkout breakdown for your actual basket. Review Instacart’s fee information.
Kroger says delivery fees vary by service, time slot and membership status. It offers its own delivery in select markets and also uses third-party services such as Instacart and Shipt. Kroger’s terms distinguish its own delivery orders from third-party orders, including in how coupon eligibility may work. To judge a delivery membership, estimate how often you would order and compare its cost with the fees it could actually waive. Include any service fees and tips that remain, as well as item prices. Service availability is local. A retailer may offer pickup or delivery in some areas without serving every address, and the available options can differ by store. Check your address before changing your regular shopping routine; a nearby location’s existence does not establish that it offers the time slot or service you need.
Also confirm payment methods and benefit eligibility for the exact store and fulfillment method. Kroger’s delivery information says SNAP EBT is accepted for pickup at its pickup locations, subject to stated exceptions, and that WIC is not currently accepted there. Because payment rules and availability can change, verify the current terms before depending on a benefit.

- Choose a normal basket. Include the brands, quantities and fresh or weighted items your household commonly buys.
- Build the basket at both stores. Sign in or link each loyalty account, apply relevant coupons, and select the fulfillment method you would use.
- Compare the checkout totals. Account for item prices, discounts, estimated weights, substitutions, taxes and fees.
- Test the routine. Confirm a workable pickup window or delivery slot, local coverage and the store’s substitution process.
- Check rewards and payment needs. Read eligibility and redemption rules, and verify accepted payment or benefit options for that service.
- Recheck periodically. Fees, memberships, promotions and service areas can change, so revisit the comparison when your routine or the terms change.
Kroger, Target and Instacart illustrate how loyalty rules and fulfillment charges can differ, but they are examples rather than a ranking of grocery chains. Regional stores and local terms may offer a better fit for a particular household.
