What to Know Before Reinstalling a Sound Card Driver in Windows

Reinstalling a sound card in Windows usually means uninstalling its driver in Device Manager and restarting—not removing the physical card.

To reinstall a sound card’s driver in Windows, remove the audio device from Device Manager and restart your PC. Windows will attempt to install the driver again automatically. This is a driver procedure—not instructions to open the computer and remove a physical sound card. The steps below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; labels and available options can vary by device and Windows version.

Before you uninstall the audio device

First rule out a basic sound setting: confirm the intended output is selected, the volume is up, and the audio is not muted. If sound is merely quiet, audio enhancements or the selected audio format may also be involved; see Microsoft’s low or quiet sound troubleshooting steps.

Uninstall and reinstall the sound driver

  1. Open Device Manager. Search Windows for Device Manager and open it.
  2. Find the audio device. Expand Sound, video and game controllers, then locate the sound card or audio device associated with the problem.
  3. Uninstall the device. Right-click the relevant listing (or press and hold it on a touch device) and select Uninstall device. If Windows offers a checkbox to attempt to remove the driver, its wording and availability may vary; Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions include this option. Select Uninstall to confirm.
  4. Restart the PC. Windows attempts to reinstall the audio driver after restart. Microsoft describes this as an automatic reinstall attempt, not a guarantee that every audio problem will be fixed. See its audio troubleshooting guidance and Device Manager driver instructions.
  5. Test the result. Select the intended output in Sound settings and try playing audio. Check Device Manager as well to see whether the device appears and whether Windows reports a problem.

If the sound device is still missing or not working

Check for a disabled or hidden device

A missing output can result from a disabled device or a driver that is missing, outdated, or failing to load; it does not by itself prove the hardware has failed. In Device Manager, check for a disabled audio device. You can also select View > Show hidden devices, then choose Action > Scan for hardware changes. Microsoft explains these checks in its guide to a missing or undetected audio output device.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Try a generic driver or the device maker’s driver

If Windows’ automatic reinstall does not restore audio, try the generic audio driver available through Device Manager. Another option is the driver for the exact PC or audio-device model and Windows version, obtained from the PC or sound-card manufacturer’s official support page. Follow that maker’s installation instructions and restart if requested. Microsoft warns against downloading drivers from unofficial sites. Windows may report that the best driver is already installed even when the manufacturer offers a newer model-specific version.

Choose based on compatibility rather than assuming one driver is universally better: use a driver that matches the device model and Windows version, and consider whether the fault began after a driver or Windows update. Microsoft’s Windows audio guide covers the generic-driver option, while its missing-device guidance points to manufacturer drivers.

Roll back a driver after an update

If sound worked before a Windows or driver update and stopped afterward, open the audio device’s Properties in Device Manager, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if the option is available. Microsoft lists rollback as a possible remedy for audio failures that follow an update; the option may not be available on every system.

What this procedure does—and does not do

Uninstalling the device in Device Manager removes or changes its driver configuration; it does not physically remove a sound card. Do not open the computer or reseat a card as part of this software procedure. If driver reinstall, device checks, and basic sound settings do not resolve the issue, the cited Windows steps do not establish that hardware failure is the cause; consult the PC or audio-device maker’s model-specific support guidance.
