A jailbreak claim does not prove that Linux, an emulator frontend, or a specific game will work on that same console. Before changing anything, check the relevant project’s current compatibility information and weigh the setup requirements against the games and updates you might give up.
Start with your firmware and the project you want to use
“PS5 modding” can refer to different things: running homebrew on the console, booting Linux, or using an emulator frontend with separate emulator software. Their compatibility lists are not interchangeable. The ps5-linux project’s live README, checked October 4, 2026, lists support for PS5 Phat and Slim consoles on firmware 3.00, 3.10, 3.20, 3.21, 4.00, 4.02, 4.03, 4.50, 4.51, 5.00, 5.02, 5.10, 5.50, 6.00, 6.02, 6.50, 7.00, 7.01, 7.20, 7.40, 7.60, and 7.61. It says M.2 support applies only to some listed versions, that versions 1.xx and 2.xx are not a priority, and that the project will not support firmware 8.00 or higher.

A separate September 30, 2026 Tom’s Hardware report says the Relapse jailbreak supports PS5 and PS5 Pro firmware 7.00 through 13.60. That describes the reported jailbreak’s reach—not Linux support, emulator support, or guaranteed compatibility for every console revision. Treat each project’s own documentation as the deciding source for your specific setup.

| Route or claim | What the available documentation says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Linux through ps5-linux | The live project README lists PS5 Phat and Slim firmware 3.00 through 7.61, at the specific versions listed above. | It does not establish support for firmware 8.00 or higher, PS5 Pro, or every emulator and game. |
| Relapse jailbreak | Tom’s Hardware reported on September 30, 2026, that it supports PS5 and PS5 Pro firmware 7.00 through 13.60. | A jailbreak compatibility claim does not establish that the ps5-linux loader or any particular emulator works on those versions. |
| Homebrew frontend such as Twiso | Twiso’s README describes a frontend that depends on a jailbroken console and other software components. | It does not provide a universal firmware list or a ready-to-use set of emulator binaries. |
Before choosing a route, compare your exact firmware and console model with the current compatibility notes for the loader, frontend, and emulator backend you intend to use. A project’s supported firmware today may change as its documentation is updated.

Know what “modded” means in practice
Linux is a temporary boot, not a permanent conversion
The ps5-linux project describes its setup as a soft mod. Its README says, “You need to re-run the exploit in order to boot into Linux.” In other words, the documented process does not turn the console into a permanently Linux-based machine; you must run the exploit again when you want to boot Linux.
A frontend is not the emulator itself
Twiso is a community frontend, not a one-click emulator bundle. Its README lists dependencies including a jailbroken console on exploitable firmware, an ELF loader, a HEN daemon, and additional support components. Emulator backends must be supplied separately; Twiso says it neither ships nor replaces their binaries. That means installing the frontend alone does not give you a ready library of systems or games.

Project activity is not proof of game performance
PS5LM’s community research notes describe projects including PS2 emulation and Vulkan-based work. These show that community development exists, but they do not establish that a particular game runs well, that all games are compatible, or that performance is consistent across firmware and hardware combinations. No game-level performance results are established here.

Account for storage and setup equipment
The ps5-linux project’s setup instructions specify a USB drive with at least 64 GB of capacity and require a USB keyboard and mouse. The project strongly recommends an external SSD. These are setup requirements and recommendations, not a way to enable an exploit or guarantee that an emulator will work.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
An M.2 drive is optional for a dedicated Linux installation on supported versions. In this setup, the project says the M.2 drive is used exclusively for Linux rather than PS5 game storage. Check both the project’s version-specific instructions and Sony’s M.2 compatibility guidance for your console before buying storage; the project does not identify a tested brand or model.
Weigh the update trade-off before changing firmware
System updates can affect exploit compatibility, while a game or game update may require newer system software. Tom’s Hardware’s September 30 report describes that tension and attributes details about a Wolverine digital release or update requirement to gamer reports. That should not be treated as an official Sony specification for every copy or situation.

- Integrated I/O, the custom integration of the PS5 console's systems lets creators pull datat from the SSD so quickly that they can design games in ways never before possible
- Ray Tracing, immerse yourself in owrlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games
There is no universally correct update choice: it depends on whether retaining a compatible firmware matters more to you than access to newer software. Verify the requirements that matter to you before updating. The ps5-linux project says users cannot downgrade through its documented process, so do not assume a later update can simply be reversed.
Understand the terms and regional limits
Sony’s Norway PS5 System Software License Agreement prohibits using unauthorized, illegal, counterfeit, or modified hardware or software with System Software; bypassing PS5 encryption, security, or authentication; downgrading; and exploiting System Software outside the agreement’s authorized use. It also says Sony may take measures if it determines the agreement was violated, including limiting system-software use or PlayStation access, terminating service access, or denying warranty, repair, or other services.
Best Value
Those terms are from Sony’s Norway agreement. Check the agreement and applicable law for your own region rather than assuming identical wording or consequences everywhere. The agreement describes possible measures; it does not establish that every consequence is automatic in every case.
Use a decision checklist before proceeding
- Identify your exact console model and installed firmware.
- Check the current compatibility information for the specific jailbreak, Linux loader, frontend, and emulator backend you want; do not substitute one project’s list for another’s.
- Confirm you can meet the storage and peripheral requirements, including the project’s 64 GB minimum USB drive, USB keyboard and mouse, and recommended external SSD if using its Linux setup.
- Decide whether keeping your current firmware is more important than installing newer system software or meeting a game’s reported or stated requirements.
- Read the applicable regional platform agreement and consider that service, access, warranty, or repair outcomes may be affected.
If any required component lacks support for your exact firmware, or if you need a guaranteed game-compatibility result, the available community documentation does not justify treating a PS5 emulator setup as a turnkey solution.
